I don't see much to speculate about unfortunately.

In the four images which are still gray on their picture ...

    1. The big fella with the gun is pretty clear.

    2. The blue lady with shield and mace on the right is also pretty clear.

    3. A character with 2 knifes like weapons is evident as well

    4. There is some caster near the middle. As the books mentioned a Mesmer what is there to guess ... ?!

On the same wavelength as far as next class reveal, they may shock us with something unexpected but the Mesmer has become a bit of an iconic class for GW, unique, dearly loved by those that play it and even  those that don't, was always a bit of an underdog in PvE but the competent players proved their use and Anet showed the class some love. Would be a REAL shame not to see it return for GW2.

I also think that the class we are familiar with but reworked will be a priest class, protection fits nicely in to all they've said about support and damage mitigation above healing, in GW they finally (took Anet a while IMO) got some good damage skills in to the smite attribute line too, they've got a solid base already with the exclusion of healing.

Time will tell but speculation is always fun :)

No offense, OP, but I don't think you should be allowed to title something as FACT when it's not, regardless of what board it's posted on.

It's simply titled "The Fifth Profession" it doesn't say its an announcement, it's categorized as a column and the intro tease/blurb makes mention that it is speculative in nature. :)

I hear ya, Mike.   I just don't like being misled.  It felt misleading to me.  Good article though....well written and all.  I think I just got pissed because I want to KNOW that mesmer is in game, and this basically just tortured me more.  I don't like that.

currently, there's no caster prof that can wield a gun or rifle

i hope that the GW2 Mesmer will be the caster class that can wield pistols (dualwield will be extremely cool) and rifles, and be better at dealing damage while interupting

I think this is a good deduction. Very intrigued what they do witht the Mesmer.

...has to do with the fact they were easier to get ready into the game (due the obvious fact they share similarities with their counterparts in the original Guild Wars). There has also been word that Guild Wars 2's profession roster will consist of several returning professions from the original game, two professions that are "inspired by" professions from the original game but different enough to warrant a new name, and one entirely new profession.

You know that someone at ArenaNet is good at marketing when speculation about a single class reveal is front page news.  In most games, even the company actually revealing a new class doesn't merit front page news.

haha that'd be crazy if that concept art was for some gypsy...dancer/bard type support class that was all buffs, party based with control/interrupt dance/music "spells" on top of that...haha i was bored & thinking of the most random outcomes xp (that & have this thing bout bard classes, that's my unique class of choice xp)

  • sazabisazabi Member UncommonPosts: 389

mesmer is more than likely, but id say its very possible we might get mesmer-assassin hybrid.

  • ScotScot Member LegendaryPosts: 24,427

Incredibly weak idea for an article, are we going to have one of these just before each new GW2 class is 'revealed'? Followed by an article on what the class actually turned out to be? Go down to their offices and rattle their cage till they tell you something new. Don't rely on search Fu, we can do that.

In defence of the staff writer I will say though that accusations that this article was 'torture' are maybe going a bit far. :D

I wouldn't say that. Hexes have been removed, twitch-based interruption has been removed and those were the things that made the mesmers what they are. Most of what GW2 is aiming for is proactive gameplay (prevention is better than cure) therefore reworking the mesmer for that type of gameplay could take any amount of time. You could even use the same argument for the "assassin" that the author has used for the mesmer, they were in GW: Factions, they share similarities with their faction counterparts and therefore it would just be a case of readapting their mechanic to GW2.

Lol, with that I've started to convince myself its the assassin that's going to be revealed.

    This is not a game.

  • jondifooljondifool Member UncommonPosts: 1,143

I also feelt the title misleading. And though i buy the argument that strictly speeking the autor didn't do anything wrong, i hope the staff also listen to the frustration about being toyed with. I mean we are your readers right ?

Besides that since its a speculation thread anyway i jump in.

I think there is a big chance that a mesmer is in the game , its to iconic for GW not to be there

The problem is that a major part of its GW1 funktion will not work the same in GW2.(changes to game speed will make its interupt and denial funktion work different) .

To solve that i think that there is a big chance that mesmer will be pulled i the direktion of sword and pistol use. And that it will be an adventure class. And have a twist of duelist, charlatan, pirat, or even musketteer.

But my main prediction is that its only if the mesmer is pulled in that direktion we will see a mesmer revealed as a 5th profession.

If the mesmer its keept much closer to the original, i think an assasin like class is much more likely to see now.

GJ ;) It's more that the Mesmer is almost cert. "Mesmerizer" when it's revealed. Assassin/Rogue might have a name change. There's more refs to a Mesmer floating about and especially in the new book, that's got to be part of ArenaNet's marketing plan and the idea that the older profs will return but with a few novelties eg Ranger Pet mechanic is a big change. Hexes will find another form in Control perhaps?

  • LydonLydon Member UncommonPosts: 2,938

My money's definitely on the Mesmer. I think the concept art makes it a little obvious.

Read the novels and you know which proffesions that will be in:)  Edge of destiny reveals 2-3 new classes.

  • sadeNightfelsadeNightfel Member Posts: 4

i dont know about any of this. i understand that a mesmer was kickass in pvp but in pve they were more of a supporting roll and in GW 2 they have to be able to fly solo there are no multi professions like you could have in GW1. i know they are good at taking out a single target quickly but when they came up against a group they would not last long due to the lack of armor.  as for the book they talked about gwen the mesmer but i could find no other metion about any one being one, not that i am saying there isn't any other mention in the book i might of missed it if so plz post the page number and i will look again. but as for a new class i would like to see a pirate/corsair as a gun user plus it would cool because of all the water based areas. also i read some were that there would be a class that uses alot of enviroment based weapons. and i ould also like to see a ritualist again but they might not come untill factions 2 (i hope they do make a factions 2 and nightfall 2)

    p.s. srry for bad spelling

They've already ruled out a "gunner" profession, at least one that specializes in guns. More likely we'll see something akin to a "pirate" or "corsair" style profession, which fits better into the lore. Heck, we even know that Lions Arch is basically run by pirates now and pirates are directly mentioned in both books so far. What people are looking for is a class that can use guns and not bows, as was mentioned as coming. This leaves us the two candidates... mesmer and "pirate". Mesmers would work quite well with pistols in addition to their other weapons, and pirates would work with pistols or rifles in addition to other weapons. Note - in the HoM rewards, there's a pistol with a very nautical theme to it (it's a fish, basically), which would tend to further reinforce a "pirate-esque" profession. So, what I expect remains is this:

Mesmer. Purely iconic and beloved class from the original. The game would be missing a chamber of its heart without the mesmer.

Guardian. The "Blue Mace Lady/Lord", Logan Thackery.

Assassin-like profession. Renamed, reworked, one of the professions with a stealth like ability (see Rangers for another).  NOT sickly over-reliant on stealth like in "other" games.

Corsair/Pirate. The other "gun" profession, uses swords for melee combat to good effect. Adventurer profession, also has a pet, but not to the extent of a Ranger. (If you look at the reveal page at the Charr on the left and instead of a "Charrzooka", picture a bird with wings spread...)

    Oderint, dum metuant.

Nah, mesmers and assassins are complete opposites. Assassins go over to their target and unleash huge damage, killing their target. Mesmers convince their target to kindly kill themselves for them.

Pirate is not unlikely. But I think some kind of musketeer class with muskets and rapier are more likely, a class that can work as pirates and any other swashbuckling class.

Besides the first GW have a lot of pirates (called Corsairs) even if you couldn't play them. A pirate class in GW would most likely be called "Corsair" as well. But a musketeer class works fine for Chars and they invented the guns, Corsair is a more suspicious class for a Char, at least from what I know of them from the first game.

i'm wondering if non-GW1 players can understand and appreciate what a Mesmer is

cuz it's pretty unique to GW and has no real equivalent in WoW or LOTRO, and has its own niche within the game

will people be mesmerized or be perplexed by this prof?

im in love with mesmer here also. Really wierd and unique character to play even now. Interupter,  Healer/Caster pain with some cool dmg dealing skills. Was my first character in GW and looking forward to play him again in GW2.

    less is more

i agree about that . I just also see a musketeer class as a possible development of the mesmer !

(some development has to happend to the mesmer anyway)

Already we know of the mesmers affinity of rapiers, from concept art. And i also think i remember som interview about the original mesmer was thought to use the sword more (illusinary weapon).

The 250 years that have passed could have the mesmer picking up pistols aswell.

And then the mesmer becomes a flamboyant duelist , still a charlatan and trickster, but now also a fencer and soldier. Musketeer will be a fiting name! btw this will certainly be a adventure class.  But more likely the mesmer keeps its name , but fits the musketeer role !

Although I agree that the game will include the Mesmer... I don't believe that to be the next reveal. They have had quite a bit of time since the last reveal and have recently been very sparse on the information. So which would live up to the reason for the wait? A reveal of yet another class that was already in GW1, or a reveal of an entirely new class? Although I have no idea what the new class will be, my money is on the reveal to be something completely new.

    My guesses:

Scholar: "Alchemist" (a long range class specializing in potions & magic and being heavy into crowd control).

Adventurer: "Mesmer/Assassin" (I think our Mesmer will be joined with the assassin and be a damage dealer good at stealth and subterfuge, since Hexes will not be in GW2) (Messassin? Assassmer?)

Adventurer: "Pistoleer" (a mid-range fighter dealing moderate damage and offering crowd control with some melee skills, kind of a jack-of-all trades)

Soldier: "Paladin/Captain" (a melee fighter that provides buffs for its companions through shouts/speeches)

It definitely looks like Mesmer..but I thought that I read somewhere that the last four professions weren't going to be something we saw in GW?  Oh well, maybe I'm getting myself confused with something else I read.  Mesmer is a really cool profession and it would be good to see it again in GW2 :D
