First and foremost YOU SUCK TRION WORLD! Followed with a, HURRY UP WITH THAT SYFY MMO!
Now continuing on. Does anyone know exactly anything about that lawsuit that Palladium Books filed against Trion World?
I could careless about Trion's stupid MMO (I don't really like fantasy that much) but why can't they just call it Planes of Telara instead of Rift: Planes of Telara? Calling it Rift will only confuse fans of Rifts. And I would really love to see a Rifts MMO in the (probably distant) future. I mean everyone has played a game with Elves and Dwarves fighting evil genocidal Dragons. I rather play a game with Psi Stalkers and Wolfen fighting evil interdimensional slavers known only as Slugorths!
(Part of this thread is just to give me a reason to rant about it Trion stealing that name.)
Oh, and if you're trying to figure out why Palladium Books is making a big deal out of this. Its because other medias have been screwing over RPG companies for a long time. Case in point Æon Flux v. Aeon (now known as Trinity) where MTV tried to take legal action against White Wolf for using the word Aeon in the title of one of their books. Spawn v. Nightspawn (now known as Nightbane) were Todd McFarlane's lawyers threaten Palladium Books for using the word Spawn in their title. And besides, if someone named something "Dungeon and Dragon" (no "S" thats how its different) they wouldn't get away with it, so why should Trion get away with Rift?

Dude that's nuts.

No offense, but I just can't bring myself to care about it. If it was such a big deal it would have been settled by now, not waited until just before release. Most Judges at this point would err on the side of the defendent due to the costs of changing things this late in the game. Besides, Rift and Rifts: Plane of Telara, are enough different that getting a copyright infringement case will be next to impossible.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
It was settled. Rift: PoT is now just Rift.

Everyone on this site:
1: MMORPGs are DOOMED, and I have the answers to save them!
2: THIS game's gonna kill WoW!
3: I wish things would go back to the Golden Age of MMORPGs, which only existed in my mind...
I believe they settled but did not disclose terms to the public.

Yes dismissed. Not a settelment.
There's this thing you can do when on the internet, it's called a search. You can find the answer to nearly everything.
Palladium Books had no case. These two things are so dissimilar that they had no real grounds for a lawsuit. They must be desperate for money, with Champions failing and all.

Um. I think you're confusing Palladium Books with HERO Games which has just been pumping out books like crazy. Champions Online might be failing in the numbers, but Champions the Roleplaying Game is forever. Hell, there are third party companies putting out books specifically for Champions.
Thanks Danbacca for the link.
You know, with what Trion said then Palladium Books could just make some crappy limited release video game that bare the Rifts name. Kinda like how Harmony Gold (I hate you, you stupid lawyer group) keeps the rights to Robotech by putting out stupid Robotech stuff (Mechwarrior 4 has been postponed indifinately because of that stupid tactic (actually it a stupid lawsuit, Harmony Gold doesn't even own the rights to the robot designs in question and never had)).
There was some kind of deal out of court. Either did Trion give Palladium some money or Trion maybe decided to work together with PB in some way, I know PB have talked about licensing R.I.F.T.S or Palladium fantasy.
But most likely did Trion give Kevin a little money but not that much. I don't think this would have been settled out of court otherwise, PB do have the license for the name Rifts in computer games even if it havn't been used that much.
