Making MMORPGs enjoyable to the masses might be seen by some (investors, players, developers, advertisers, designers, etc) as 'doing everything right'.

I'm sure there's a forum where MP3 enthusiasts say the iPod sucks.  As with MMORPG.com's posters, some of the criticism may be correct (usually around the depth/featureset/capabilities.)

But as with MMORPG.com's posters, a lot of the criticism may revolve around accessibility/usability.  While it's obvious to any designer that these are critical traits of a successful, functional product, the hardcore users have already developed a skillset around circumventing the crappy usability of earlier products -- so they consider the efforts wasted (even as those same efforts are exactly what makes the product awesome to such a wide audience.)

    Debatable...

First introduced doesn't mean "invented". Blizzards is notorious for working on games for years before we even see anything from them (alpha/beta or other). The first fully functioning'sh AH that I remember (and that's what counts, what we remember) was in WoW.

    To the point though.

The WoW IPod comparison is good but is apples/oranges also. I won't touch any music player that forces me to use "only this or that". I also haven't played an MMO since WoW that I enjoyed more. Some were good, but didn't keep me wanting to play as much. The first EQ was like that too, but quit becasue of all the dang expansions and changes.

Blizzard is also notorious on copying what other people had done and making it "better".

Whole Warcraft/starcraft thing was based on copying Warhammer.

In Blizzard's defense, didn't they get screwed over by Games Workshop? Pretty sure Blizzard was contracted to make a War40k game and the contract was pulled at the last minute. Similar to how Sony was screwed by Nintendo with their Playstation.

Ironic that both went on to beat (sales wise) who screwed them over though. :)

i dont see a difference here, and i wouldnt say the ipod did everything right, or we all would own one eh?

We don't all play World of Warcrapt either though.  But then again....there's NO "perfect" product because absolutely NOTHING is able to cater to the taste of every human being.  That is, assuming perfection could be measured by every person, or even just every gamer loving it, which obviously, we do not.

I don't own an iPod OR play WoW but I love music and listen to it almost constantly via OTHER means and I love MMOs and play them too....just not WoW's VERSION of the MMO.  I don't care for that "flavor" of MMO, thank you very much.  Doesn't mean someone else might not ADORE it and think it's perfect for THEM, but perfection as a literal term......doesn't exist in any manmade anything.

I didn't listen to the podcast but I read the front page and this caught my eye:

"Paul lists Cataclysm as number two in his top ten games of 2010. The first thing he mentions about it is that he is impressed that Blizzard effectively finished Cataclysm earlier in the year and then was powerful enough to just "sit on it" so they could release it closer to Christmas. After this he goes on to compare World of Warcraft to the iPod."

Oh Paul, I guess you still never fully understood why Warhammer didn't meet expectations.

P.S Arcona you stole my pic D:

What I think is funny, and a little sad, is that Paul Barnett calls 6 months of beta testing "sitting on it".

Hey Paul, perhaps if you "sat on" Warhammer Online for an additional 6 months it wouldnt be in the dumpster now.

The power of marketing.. sad but true.. When was the last time you saw any national marketing for audio players outside of Apple's Ipods.. I honestly can't recall if I ever saw one.. But I have seen and heard many Ipod ads.. People buy what they are told to buy unfortunately.. This reminds me of the old example of Betamax vs VHS tapes.. Because of marketing, people were pulled into supporting VHS, even though betamax was technically better..  People are easily influenced and don't always make the right choices, even as group..

Betamax might have been technologically better but it could not compete on useability.  Usuabitlity and accessability are big parts of 'quality' when it comes to consumer products.   Betamax was less practical for the average person so it ended up losing.

The fact still remains.. Betamax was just superior to VHS in all regards.. But as I said.. because of marketbility, such as VHS players or recorders being more available people were pulled into supporting VHS..  Thank goodness Blue Ray wasn't driven into the ground by Mr Bill "Im a god" Gates..  Microsoft tried to use their power to become the premeir HD format..  TY Sony for sticking with blue ray, and for the people to support it.. Sony now has a stable solid demand and appeal for HD..  I love my PS3 :)

Some things about Ipods I prefer it for my audiobooks because they I can make them more compact when I convert them from mp3 format they take up way less space about more than half smaller since audiobook the quality can be 16bit and even a 14 hour  book can be only only one file ,bookmarking on the shuffle is available too if you make them into m4b format. Plus the ipod shuffle is so tiny I can stick it on my collar and listen to my book while I take a walk. Yes the ipod may be more expensive than the mp3 player but in the end things like this make a difference to me.

I guess I also shunned the betamax for the VHS.

However I think he has a point though.

Betamax only had 1 hour on a tape, so you needed to switch tapes 2-3 times.

The first years they were 45 min or 60 min, later they were movie lenght.

But by then VHS had almost same picture.  They both 350×480 by then.

Maybe this will help ya.. :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Videotape_format_war

But anyways.. It's all about who can market their product when and where, not necessaryly who was best.. Maybe in the long run Sony learned from this and why Blue Ray was able to hold on, despite the competition..

It was not superior in the regards that actuallly mattered to customers.  It was more expensive and the 1 hour limit in the beginining was a serious design flaw.
