I’ve heard it’s not in the greatest state right now, but it’s less than a year old, and games are often released too early, but then turn into gold once all the kinks are worked out.  This one seems like it’d be a pretty good fit for me, but I have a few questions about the game and I’m hoping you guys will be nice enough to answer them.

In combat, is it just like a FPS, where you hit whatever is in front of you, or is the game just in first person but there’s still some type of auto-aim?

For raising skills, I’ve heard that you can’t max everything, which is fine by me.  I have no desire to craft, skin, butcher, cook, mine, etc., I am more interested in killing stuff and exploring.  That being said, will I be able to max out 1 melee skill as well as 1 magic skill?  How many skills can you viably expect to max out on one character?

Is the world persistent?  Are there zones?  Are there instances?

I know the game has PvP, but how is the PvE?

My last question is about gear.  How is most of it acquired?  Do you find gear off dead mobs or in chests around the world?  Do you get any from NPCs as quest rewards?  Is everything player crafted?

Thanks in advance.

Hi.  First, I might recommend asking this stuff in the official forums.  Most of the people here don't actually play the game.

    Anyway:

    - Yup, it's pure FPS.  THere's some problems with lag currently, where occasionally there'll be fights that the person is hitting you (or your hitting him) from farther away than they should be.  But there's no auto-aim or anything like that.

-To answer the fighter/mage question, it really all depends on how much you're a min-maxer.  You can learn to cast a few nice spells and also be good with swords (I'm thinking maxing out swords and stuff, but more diversity might be handy).  THing is, you won't be as good at the magic stuff as pure mages (you won't be regening mana as quickly, etc), and you might not be as good at melee as a purebred fighter (won't regen stamina as quickly, or you'll have to sacrifice speed maybe, or whatever).   If well thought out, it could be a pretty decent build actually.

    - Yup, the world is persistant (not counting the server crashes image ), and it's all one server.  There's no zones or instances, everything is one giant open world... no load screens or anything, and no places where you're 100% safe from anyone.  There ARE guarded cities where you can call insta-killing guards to protect you, but it's still possible to kill you if you're afk and they play their cards right.  All in all those places are pretty safe though....

    -  PvE is not MO's strong point.  I would say PvE is improving, but since you're new that doesn't really help you much...  PvE itself is pretty repetitive, but to be fair I hate PvE in any game.  I can think of games with better PvE, but I much prefer the "PvE experience" in MO, because when you're PvE'ing you're at risk (that is, out of guard zones).  That makes whacking at animals more exciting.   In the end though, PvE needs some love.

    -  About gear:

-- Not counting "noob rags" and a noob sword/axe, 100% of weapons and armor are player made.  To get these items you have to find crafters in towns that will sell you some.  There's also player vendors (NPCs owned/controlled by players) at player houses that tend to sell weapons and armor (esp. weapons)... these player houses are typically placed near main roads and rivers, and they usually have good stuff (usually a bit pricey for my taste).

Anyway, NPCs don't drop weapons or armor, they just drop carcasses (that you can skin, bring back to town to butcher or sell to a butcher)

    Hope I helped

Right now here is probably the best place to get honest straight-up answers.

Official forums are always seething with fan-bois.  Game haters only tend to hang around forums like these at release, or during an expansion

Ive never played it, I researched it before it came out, decided to leave it, never ready anything thats made me care either way about it, but I do happen to know a bunch of people who have played it, they are kinda split on it at the moment, still a lot of work needs putting into it.

Some still play it a lot, hoping for better days or maybe because they have a good guild.  So if you intend on going to a game like Mortal, be sure you have a home there or some good friends already playing.

There is a hard skill cap.  It is up to you how to spend those points.  Sure you could max out one "melee skill" but there are other skills you will need to fight effectively as a melee. Thus you cannot build someone who is the best at melee AND the best at magic.  Although magic skills are still just placeholder until they add the long awaited magic schools in a future patch.. so much could chage.

Is the world persistent?  Are there zones?  Are there instances?  It is persistent.  I believe that their main city (which isn't in the game yet) might be instanced but otherwise there are no instances.

I know the game has PvP, but how is the PvE? Here is a video of a group taking down the current big boss mob of the world: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxOQdtxgbl4   Decide for yourself.
