Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

Those who play DCUO, please play with an controller if....

...you want to keep your hands and mind healthy.

I played the BETA for 3 days and believe it or not, but I developed finger twitches which might turn out to be Carpel Tunnel Syndrome.

This made me doubt about the future of action based MMO's. The button bashing style of gameplay will be devestating for your fingers... and especially since were talking about MMO's. Even if your posture is correct and you have a good keyboard/mouse setting it is still very dangerous.

I was just going to start a thread to ask if this game will work good with a controller on PC, or if I'd have to get the PS3 version for that very reason....?

  • nomssnomss Member UncommonPosts: 1,468

Hey my controller is messed up. I have been wanting to get some help with this regard. So the controller works just fine in FFXIV, but when I switch over to DCUO it doesn't. This is what happens: on the right analog stick, which is used to control the camera, moving right analog stick right/left makes the camera go up/down and moving r.analog stick up/down makes the camera go left/right. Can someone help me with this please.

We've heard that many people prefer playing DCUO on the PC with a controller then the Playstation 3. If you're already an owner of a Playstation 3 you can even find simple ways via the internet for using your PS3 controller on your PC(that what I do). I played DCUO for about 20 minutes using the keyboard and mouse. It's not horrible but I could definitely see myself $%#^@ up my hands with this game. I googled some information on using my PS3 controller for the PC version of this game. BAM! It's so much easier to play too.

I would never play this game w/ a keyboard/mouse.  Hell it makes my thumb sore even w/ a controller.

dont listen to the OP. stick with PC with no controller. I did beta for PC and PS3. No MMO should be played with a controller, it is horrible and just sucks....Your hand/fingers will not twitch as mine have not at all, ever....and I have played the game for the past 3 months. Can't do this MMO with a controller, or maybe any MMO....having to use 2 buttons at once to cast a skill/spell and having to remember which 2 to press to bring up the skill....annoying.

This MMO is perfect for a controller.  It was designed that way hence why it plays well on the PS3 with a controller at least IMHO.  I don't know where you get the holding 2 buttons to do anything you hold L2/R2 then either triangle, x, square, or circle then release and you don't have to use your powers all the time because you have combos.

Actually, my main concern was how the lifetime of my mouse would be affected. I didn't feel any problem in my hands, but I rarely play over 2-3 hours straight.

  • cheyanecheyane Member LegendaryPosts: 9,405

I also felt my mouse was being abused. I don't relish replacing my 79 euro mouse ever so often.

I do like the game but decided against it in the end because of this clicking issue and I am sad because I honestly enjoyed playing it.

One of the perks of playing bass before playing this game.  Fingers do not really get tired

Actually, now that it's mentioned, I broke my mouse because of this game.  But it was a 20 buck wireless mouse.  I've since convinced the money-holder in the family to allow me to purchase a WAY better mouse and have had no further issues.  ESPECIALLY now that I have like 8 mouse buttons... way  more efficient IMO.

Seriously, the twitching you are experiencing is crack withdrawls.

I played this game for 3 weeks straight fairly hardcore with a kb/m and I'm fine.

aye correct, and most likely it isnt Carpel Tunnel (doctor sends me to neurologist). But that doesnt change the fact it delivered me a muscle injury.

I went to an XBox controller I had laying around. The problem then became loosing target lock since the left trigger operates your hotbar. Means I am hitting random mobs everytime I turn around and getting swamed. I have opted to not buy the game as well because of the crappy UI, lack of powers, roles, and crappy CC.

Personal tastes, I guess.  I've played it heavily with both kb/mouse and PS3 controller, and i've decided to stick with kb/mouse.  It allows for much more precision control of my characters actions for me, and I haven't encountered any finger fatigue.  Their combo system with the mouse of click-click-hold, click-hold-click etc seems perfect with the mouse.  I almost feel like it was more designed for a mouse than a controller in that regard.

Anyway, like I said, personal preferences.  I'm glad there is a game that allows people to choose one or the other and make both viable.

Very true. It is indeed a dangerous thing, more than ppl realize.

To the OP,  the problem you are experiencing with your "twitching" doesn't have anything to do with a crazy syndrome,  its just that you aren't used to this kind of movement at this rate.  For example,  people walk all the time,  but if someone runs for an extended period of time  when they haven't run before in that capacity,  they could get muscle spasms or muscle cramps because they just aren't used to it.

Thats most likely all that is,  and as you get used to it you won't have the problem anymore.   Either that or use a controller,  whatever is more comfortable.

Feel free to buy and send me an xbox controller for my PC, and I will gladly use it, but I'm not going to shell out for a controller when I do just fine on the keyboard.

lol, you obivously don't have any knowledge about movement and muscles. I don't get twitching because im not used to it, but because its a bad motion of the finger. You can train that to a certain point ofcourse, but in the end it will only lead to problems in the future.

And it isn't a crazy syndrome. Millions of people that work with there hands or sit behind the PC develop it. It starts as a cramp, and develops if you continue with a bad movement of a certain finger.

maybe you need to use a Shake-Weight or something to build up even the remotest bit of muscle development in your hands, because I play only with a keyboard and mouse and never had a problem. Do you have troubles holding your fork or spoon when you eat your creamed spinich?

I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.

Since neither control method allows you to switch easily between menu access and combat..I use both. Keyboard and mouse when i need to use menus and once I'm entering combat I use an xbox360 controller. This works well for me since you really can't enter into a menu without leaving yourself useless in combat. The 360 controller works great for combat and shitty for menus (slow and choppy imo) while the opposite is the case for mouse and keyboard (again imo).

Carpal Tunnel isn't caused by clicking with a certain finger. It's caused by repetitive use of the hands and wrists and is way more common in factory workers and the like than people who sit behind a PC all day.

Hard for me to believe, seeing as DCUO can be rated right up there with FPS gamers who usually do more work than in DCUO. I'm not doubting the possibility of OP's claim but seeing your posts makes it hard for me to believe. Beside the fact if what you say is indeed true then I wish you the best.

BTW: Before you bash others for not knowing too much on the topic, you might want to do some research yourself before making flawed statements.

Obviously you aren't used to it or you wouldn't be having this issue,  Carpal tunnel isn't cause overnight bud. Sorry to break that to you.  I work on PCs all day, never had a problem clicking the mouse hundreds of thousands of times, and I can play this game just fine, and have been for over two months.

Maybe you should go to a doctor so he can tell you the same thing instead of posting on the forums that a game you played for 3 days gave you carpal tunnel......

I play alot of FPS games on PC using the mouse and keyboard.. I click (repeatedly) thousands of times a day.. I have been doing so for years now and I have no twitches or signs of things going bad.. I haven't played DCUO yet, but I hardly think that this game can make my FPS tried and true fingers work any harder than they are already used to working..

The way some people talk about this game though I am starting to wonder, is this like trying to play Street Fighter 4 with a mouse and keyboard? At first I was thinking sorta like a first person shooter (controls) with a touch of added technique (sorta like Genesis A.D. and the dash).. But it really sounds like I am going to be smashing the "punch" button over and over and over again to get anything done.. Is this how it is seriously?
