So many people have praised this game, and with the pending release of DC Universe Online (which I am told holds some similarities such as the arcade controls and combat system) I am begining to wonder..

Is this where we see MMO's heading for the next gen? More action, less customization, hand crafted "one size fits all" story complete with cutscenes (similar to single player rpg's), and smaller "map based" worlds?

Yes, that's where MMOs are headed. That's why many people and companies alike dropped the RPG part from the old monniker MMORPG. The current trend is to try to get most single player games into the MMO trail, no matter whether the games are RPGs or not.

Let's be honest, though I don't like it personally, many other players do, not necessarily the old MMORPG players, but players that come from a FPS or RTS background.

It makes sense for the companies too, because with a MMO, they can not only charge the initial price (and DLCs and expansions). They can also "monetize" via subscriptions and/or item malls and have far less problems with illegal copies.

Please note that Rift is everything but classic. Rift completely follows the themepark concept of MMORPGs from the last years, i.e. from the post-WoW era. In my opinion classic games are UO, EQ1, DAoC and the like from the pre-WoW era.

    Edit: spelling.

think about every gameplay genre that exists in the single player space..... there WILL be MMO versions of those kind of games, and as time goes on, most RPG elements will be eliminated from most of these different directions (OR will be added to almost every single player game......the point is, MMOs will some day offer the same kinds of choices as single player games) as people start getting comfortable with the idea that RPG elements are not intrinsically tied to a game being massively multiplayer.

this thread is simplistically considering there being only 2 directions.  each of these directions is a pre-made package of different elements that don't necessarily go together.

look at Darkfall.  it has no instances, one huge immersive world, and yet its an action game.  it doesn't fit those 2 directions.

what i'm looking for is the gameplay to be more and more action without the rpg dice rolling and character progression, BUT in a non-instanced immersive world like Darkfall's & Vanguard's.  AND without all the grinding & brainless, time-consuming, inventory micromanagement that full loot makes necessary, in those kinds of games.

and i know there are alot of action (and other gameplay genre) fans out there that HATE MMOs currently who will be wanting MMOs with their preferred gameplay.   once they see its a possibility to have a virtual world without all the drudgery of existing games.

its hilarious that a guy a few posts back think people who don't like RPGs are imaginary.  lol

Is instances really that bad? I don't know about other people and it's just my opinion but i don't mind it to be honest. I only could get to play the game for a little while but while i did i found it very much enjoyable and hope Nexon EU get their asses into gear...

Sorry , but I must say that vindictus is a piece of crap. It's laggy, It's bug ridden, it's completely instanced. They send you to different channels. Half the game is not even in 3d, it's like you are playing mobsters or something when you enter buildings.

If anything they should have labeled this game the biggest or one of the biggest let downs of the year. I'm an early bird and I don't even feel like logging into that snooze grind.

there's nothing inherently wrong with instancing.  i like the way Champions Online does it (they are public so the world feels alive, which is my whole attraction to the virtual world concept).

the thing that people like me hate is that all kinds of games are being called MMO nowadays to ride the MMO train, when they aren't massively multiplayer at all.  or only a tiny subsection of the experience is (like some city zones in Guild Wars and D&DO).

its dishonest advertising that ruins the term "MMO", where now you have to spend too many words when talking with someone to know what kinda game they are playing when they say they are playing an "MMO".  it erodes the terms so new ones have to be created, and in the meantime mass confusion and time wasteage on arguing over semantics.  yeah the world really needs more of that.  :)

following the same logic that allows a game like Vindictus to be called an MMO, you'd have to say that Quake 1 in 1996 was one of the first MMO games.  because there were many thousands playing the game all at once (all in seperate 16 player or less instances/servers).

its abuse of the terminology.  it should be reserved for games where way more than 16 players can share a significant online experience together, to present the feeling of occupying a fully populated WORLD (not a semi-populated room, or level/map).
