Exactly. Videogames have never given me stress. Very few have been truly difficult but I always came back and beat them. The greater this "Stress" was the greater was the sense of achievement. They are some of the greatest games I've played (Demon's Souls, Monster Hunter PSP, LoTRO 2007-2009, God Hand to name a few).
Honestly if we are talking about MMOs there is only one what type of gamer question. As far as anything else goes few will care.
Wrong. I like "hardcore" games, but I play them casually. There are many like me. We like games that don't treat us like we're toddlers, and we like games that are immersive/innovative (usually called "hardcore" titles for whatever reason), yet I don't invest massive amounts of time into them.
On one hand, you have single player style games like WoW, with absolutely no challenge or learning curve, and no difficulty to the quests. On the other, you have the original good games like DAoC that had fewer, more interesting quests.
Your entire post could be summarized to "I am a casual player."
EDIT: for clarity Hardcore or casual has very little to do with the game and very much to do with the player. A hardcore player can play what you might consider a casaul game in a hardcore style. Conversely a casual player could could play what you consider a hardcore title casually. Considering one of the greatest deciding factors is the time you have to play the game very few title toe the line of being hardcore or causal. Most accomodate both playstyles to some degree. Games like Eve and Darkfall are consired more Hardcore namely because they require more of a players time to see achievements but that by no means says they cant be played casually. Rather then focus on the players the time they have to spend on the title and the way they play.
I've yet to see a MMO that requires strategy. All the ones i've seen require a formula, not strategy. ie. do some specific series of events to win, not come up with a creative strategy to win.
If you can point me to a game that requires true strategy, not formula, let me know i'll subscsribe in a heartbeat.
I'd prefer a game that makes me think, that doesn't reward stupidity but isn't tedious and more work than real life. I've yet to find it.
Videogames should be exactly how stressful to each individual player as they themselves want it to be. Not impossible, but probably close to everything but lol. People usually take care of it themselves if the game is more difficult than they want though. (cash shops, hacking, botting etc)
For example, in mass effect 2 the ammo limit was one of the dumbest things I have ever seen, it was explained in ME1 why weapons were able to fire and not run out of ammo by shearing off a projectile from a block inside the weapon. When they changed it, they broke the consistancy in the game. However, a little help from a trainer and I just pretended that it never happened. I set ammo to be the same as me1, and I loved the game I would have hated it otherwise.
You know, people say wow isn't hardcore but......imho once you hit the the level cap it's a hardcore players dream. For me I can't play long these days as my life is very busy now with responsibilitys and all (also, I like to play other types of games not just mmorpg's). Games like lotro and DC universe are just right for me.
As for difficulty, I don't mind a challange at all but I have no interest in frustration either (afterall, it's very important I'm having fun in the little time I have to play nowadays). Imho, it's all about balance regarding the difficult level of a game. You need to feel like you have achieved but at the same time frustration leads to stress and games have never been and should never be about stress.
Uhh how is it a hardcore player's dream? There's nothing hardcore about it.

I was honestly expecting more for easier option.
