I don't think this game will pick a lot of people away from wow, but i'm sure RIFT will get his own loyal playerbase, like most games do.
Wow is losing players alot already becuase of how hard cata is and wiht a new out to play and swtor and guild wars around teh corner wow is taking a huge hit is subs this year and will no longer be top dog. Are raid guild is doing well bu the raid content in cata will never be pugged it's that hard the vidoes on youtube make it look easy but are first run we wipe for i know 3 hours out of a 6 hours raid time maybe more then that.

Death of wow is upon us this year people sorry cata was an utter failure lots of their players are leaving because the game is to hard now for them and they cant see the content i am in a raid guild we are doing pretty well but really the raids are hard as hell now and there is no way a casual wll ever see these raids in pug and actually down anything maybe argaloth buts thats about it. Rift, swtor, guild wars 2 will spell the end for wow this year!! The end meaning they will no longer be the top dog of course the game isn't going to die out.
LOL
The commercial was pointed toward the WRONG DEMOGRAPHIC! People who care about Azeroth at all aren't looking for a new game. The majority of the players I know in WoW aren't even "MMORPG gamers"...they don't even know what MMORPG stands for. They just play WoW. They certainly wouldn't have the foggiest idea why they should ever try to switch games. Sounds to me like th RIFT devs are focusing in on the small percentage of players who actually visit forums such as these with that 'dig' in their commercial.
Woooooow...I feel so cocky right now! I soo wanna jump into this game, can you feel the awesomeness?! I feel so rebel right now!
...
wait.. actually I don't...
But the sad truth is I think this asstalk could actually persuade some players...wow players IMO, but I don't know why..
And one more thing: Considering this sentence and the way Rift looks (UI, gold, quest givers, talents etc...) ...it's starting to smell pretty suable don't you think?
I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

did you say sueable? please don't tell you are being serious? this topic is already full of ridiculous we don't need it go down even further.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Damn people over here are too serious. Especially the WOW fans getting all red in the face.. It was a tounge in cheek comment because players keep comparing RIFT to WOW all the time. So it is TRION's way of responding to all those players.
Come on guys smile a little, life is too short to be angry and grumpy all the time. Remember it is just a video game.
must agree with paradoxy here big time......relax....

The commercial is running on tv thats wher i saw it
Who else is waiting to see the Blizzard reprisal? Content patch when Rift launches? Free month? Media blitz?
Activision Blizzard doesn't need to give free months or anything of the like. WoW is soo big Rift won't even come close to it. Rift copying wow model like all the other "new" mmos like Age of Conan, LOTRO, WAR, Aion, FFXIV, all have around 5% of the subs WoW has.
Don't forget that WoW only got that big because it is a copy of EQ, DAoC, oh and even Warhammer...... Thats right it copied Warhammer RPG.
Very naive conclusion.
They could have copied numerous other games and still failed horribly if WoW were not as well-developed as it was. IP alone does not guarantee "huge success", much less the amount WoW has had for 6+ years running. Look at SWG or LoTRO as examples of that.
Blizzard already had a well-known and well-respected reputation in the industry before WoW came out, thanks to Diablo, Starcraft and, yes, Warcraft. Even Lost Vikings is a very solid, polished and fun game. They're not a one-trick pony with WoW as their only successful venture.
A large part of WoW's initial success (before many would-be players even knew what Warcraft was) was the fact that it was the next entry in an already popular series. Warcraft already had a huge built-in fanbase. Not sure why some people forget that.
Starcraft II has done extremely well also... that has nothing to do with "copying DAoC or EQ". It's because Blizzard makes solid, polished games that people enjoy.
Honestly, it's one thing to say you don't like a game they've put out. But the way people try to dismiss or ignore Blizzard's success - with WoW or otherwise - as the result of their solid track record of developing and releasing fun games seriously needs to get their head out of the clouds.
Also, bashing WoW as "copying other MMOs" is kinda moot. Blizzard have said from the start that they designed WoW to take what they felt were the best parts of other MMOs (I believe some of them were hardcore EQ1 players as well), refine and polish them and put them into their own game. Blizzard have never claimed that "WoW was something new and innovative", yet some people seem to want to attribute that to them anyway, directly or otherwise.

I like a little "zing" with my games so Trion already won me over with that comment.
Nothing wrong with these little teases in commercials, I remember some very funny ones between Pringles and Lays a while back. And I don't remember there being Pringle fans and Lays fans arguing and hating on others.... so what I can see from a lot of these comments is that most WoW fanboys don't have a sense of humor, also when you make a public comment (ergo a post) that you don't care about that which you are commenting then you're contradicting yourself. If you don't care about Rift because it's "got nothing on WoW" then leave it be... the more you attack the more will rise to defend it.
I've pre-ordered it and made a 3 month plan... that's all that players need to do to state their case in favor of Rift, buy it and play it.
I know Im repeating myself here but...what the HELL were Trion thinking? seriously.
the bare minimum of market research would have told them how well WoW clones with zero originality fare....
you could also say the oposite too......research says that the wow formula is still holding strong because of its smooth gameplay and because its pollished.....make a good copy of that and it might work if you polish it enough for launch....no?
now you mention it yep, its more of a WAR rehash (WAR being a WoW wannabe) than a direct WoW clone.
Didnt know Rift's devs were former Mythic employees, this tidbit of info increases the sheer failing of the game by a factor of 100. its doomed from the start.
To everyone saying no WoW player will ever switch to Rift, well you are wrong, been a loyal Blizzard fan for almost a decade, been playing WoW since 1.4, seen all possible raiding content, vanilla Naxx included, and I'm goddamn tired of it,. They started losing control of their own game after TBC came out, and WotLK completetly ruined it, was hoping for some changes in Cataclysm but I guess its too late to fix things up now, Even Blizzard knows it, since they are working on a new, fresh MMO. Hope they will learn from their fails, at least.
So I'll be playing Rift instead. Sure, it does look like a WoW copy, but remember that WoW itself copied everything it has from other games and simply made them better. Still, this looks way better than most of the MMOs that came out the past years, trying to throw blizzard off of its throne, so I'll be betting all into this. And if it will fail, well, no way I'm going back to WoW, thats for sure.

make up your mind m8.....is it a wow clone or a war clone or maybe a facebook clone?
Time will tell, i've played all rounds of the beta and i am loving it......i used to play wow too and i still have respect for the game (its the bad community that made me quit wow).
Maybe Rift wont be as popular as wow.....it dont have to be......its a realy good game (but thats just mho).
Time will tell, dont try to break everything down you dont like m8.....be more positive.

hehe...yep. Another example of ill-informed bi-polar folks that I think the Rift community would be better off doing without.
Edit: Also funny how WoW enthusiasts are easily flustered calling clone when every other studio, including Blizzard borrowed from UO, EQ, Diablo, FFIX, etc., before it. Haha...well if that isn't the pot calling the kettle black, I dont know what is.

WoW players are not MMORPG gamers uh? That was a strange statement
While I agree WoW is here to stay, as long as we keep the same 15$/month subscription plan nothing will change. But at least 2011 forecasts some good releases here and there for those bored with WoW or those who can't stand WoW.

I put "MMORPG gamers" in quotes. That means they didn't join wow looking to play a MMORPG, they just wanted to play a game. So they certainly aren't looking for some new MMORPG to play. WoW is all they know. Most folks I know in WoW say, "RIFT WHO?" That was my point. RIFT marketers should be showing how the game can stand on it's own merit, not by name dropping WoW. Those same people made the same mistake in WAR by trying to say that WoW was the Beatles and WAR was Led Zepplin.
Man... You don't want to agitate the WoW fanbois who you are trying to get to play your game.. They HATE it when you even put your game in the same genre as WoW... big mistake, and the fanbois will probably make them pay for it on launch..
Massive boycotts and rampant supidity with the common "This sux, i'm going back to WoW" being repeated over and over again in chat..
I'm probably still going to pre-order because DCUO really played my face with the "pre-order beta" thing, but I really think for Trion to have former Mythic employees on it, they should have learned their lessons about placing themselves anywhere near WoW... Those people control the market..
