Credit should be given to CCP for the work they have put in to solving the problem of lag in large fleet battles in 0.0 space. I've been fighting IT Alliance and their pets in Fountain for the last few weeks and the fights are so much better than they were even a few months ago. We've been having fights with between 800-1000 people and while there is still some lag it isn't keeping us from fighting. Guns don't get stuck, jumping through gates doesn't end up in a frozen client, logistics reps and ECM are working, etc. There is still *some* lag but I haven't had to restart my client to load grid in quite a while.
There is also a Monitor widget in the client that is interesting to watch while you're in big battles. Hit Control-Alt-Shift-M to bring it up and watch the 'Outstanding' tab. It will show you actions that have been queued up and are waiting to be processed by the server. It's great for those times when there is a bit of lag because you don't feel the need to mash buttons to get something to happen which puts added stress on the node.
If you were one of the many people who left the game because of the lag you should definitely check it out again. It's not perfect yet but it is much improved.
