Sony Online Entertainment

MXO: Got killed off.

SWG: Do I need to mention this?

EQ2: Who the hell programs for hardware that will never exist (for those who do not understand this do some research and you will).

I am probably gonna buy this game. And, I am pretty sure I am gonna get bored of it and go back to WoW...then wait for TERA, Rift, and of course Guild Wars 2 (oops, and SWTOR).

DC fanboys, go away. Those of us who have been around in the MMO community long enough know about Sony's little bad habits. I know this game is going to sell, but how fast before server merges? And, will it get shut down? Discuss!

EDIT: For those who do not know, these things are easy to predict (ala FFXIV). The best example IS Final Fantasy XIV people were crying left and right about how the game sucked, the funniest part is that some believed that there would be enough fans to cover it...nope. I'd argue that Final Fantasy has a larger following than DC seeing as how Final Fantasy is international (Asians, I am Asian, read manga or grew up with Final Fantasy, not comic books...though I do like Batman a lot). So..........

I live to go faster...or die trying.

To be honest, like if I care.

I am not getting anywhere near any game that is remotely connected to SOE in any way. Period. That company is not getting a single dime from my pocket even if it's the very last gaming company on planet Earth.

Personally I think the last batch of releases like AION, WAR, AOC, FFXIV, STO make calling SOE the enemy of all things MMO look silly.  Those companies have taken disaster management/releases to an entire new level.  SOE for me is starting to actually stand for quality-compared to whats been released the last two years.

That said I think DCU is going to release pretty popular, will be pretty stable, will not suffer from game breaking bugs or server issues.  I think it will get some solid reviews (85%) type reviews and will be in the mid 7's on this site.  Around 25 or so days in we will start to hear a growing chorus about "nothing to do" about "button smashing" about it being a "console game" about there being no real "depth" and about the repitition of the gameplay over the medium and certainly the long term.

Some of the much promised "monthly content" will start to release and will be to small and to simple to satisfy the insanely rapid consumption of content that most modern MMO players exhibit.

We will start seeing people posting their goodbyes, their "when there is more content i'll be back", their "i'll never play a console game again on my PC".  The game will drift and eventually settle into the mediocrity pile.  Not a disaster but not a huge success.  Maybe settling on 50-150k subs-Eq2, Aion, LOTRO like success.

Thats my prediction.  Not fail, not success.  Solid start, pretty rapid drop, settling in on average.

Nope, you really dont.  Again, its going on six years--let it go.

With regards to DCUO; its got enough content at launch to justify the initial price of the game.  You pay the same, if not more for a console game with the same amount of content.  That, and its a pretty well done DC game.  If they dont make good on content releases, cancel your sub.  Rift will be right around the corner.

Yes, I am a little weary of SOE.  I hope the game does well.  Well enough, in fact, that its hard for me to leave for SWTOR.  We should be able to tell how well it might do at about 1.5 - 2 months in.

I will pick it up and play it.  If they can keep pushing content out I will subscribe, if not I will quit...not a big deal.  I wasted a lot more on console games that I would buy and beat in 10 hours, aka God of War 3.

I won't deny it, since the release of World of Warcraft there has not been a single game that has been better than it (MMO wise). When other games tried to copy it, they ended up screwing it. Example: AoC.

AoC was fun....for a day. Afterwards you realize the instance (dungeon) similarities to WoW but realize how unpolished it was, add this to the idiot spawn camping that occurred during the first month on PvP servers and you have yourself a broken game. But hey, what do you expect when you try to copy a 10 million+ sub game without anywhere NEAR the amount of revenue they are generating, you're simply following the leader and hoping to get a piece (very small) of the pie.

Aion, honestly, wasn't that bad. It was a solid, polished MMO that just...well, got boring as shit. I guess I don't have enough Asian in me to take the grind. I tried it again after the exp buff...but it was still so boring.

STO, tried for 5 minutes while I was drunk, never touched it again.

WAR, I really don't know where they screwed this up, it had some interesting mechanics.

    FFXIV: went through this before.

My hopes right now lie with TERA and GW2, we NEED something different without it being different and bad (FFXIV).

I love the game. I just enjoy playing it. The combat is very skill based with lots of subtle moves and counters that make the PvP in the game a true challange. It's not rock paper scissors or he who has the best gear wins either, though gear and levels do give you an advantage with enough skill it would be possible for a level 10 to beat a less skilled level 30.

That said though I can see that it's not a game for everybody. Some people won't like the twichy fast paced combat and those who can't get used to the combo system will find the game to be too hard. Others will find the limitation of only having a 6 power bar to be disappointing.

What content there is, is very cool. The voice over work is awesome, the story is interesting and the end of arc missions can be a lot of fun. The regular missions.. meh.. a little repetitive. The sad thing is that there just doesn't seem to be enough content. I'm still going to buy the game and play it, but I might cancel after my free month and give them a while to add some stuff before coming back.

All in all I figure the game will start pretty strong, probably 600,000 or so box sales with numbers tapering down to about 250,000 to 300,000 by the end of the first month with a slow decline to a steady base of around 100,000 to 150,000.

The entire purchase price would be justified solely to hear Mark Hammel's Joker. In my not entirely humble opinion, it's worth the purchase price just to hear his maniacal laughter. Bloody fantastic.

I'm not a DC fanboy by any means, but the game is very well polished and the fast-paced combat system struck a note with me. I, for one, will be picking it up a little after launch.

I am a SWG vet and I still like SOE. They have made some of the best and most interesting games out there. They crushed SWG but owell, I still had fun CU and NGE. Vangaurd was a fun game, tho broken, I still enjoyed it immensely. Pirates of the Burning Sea was a great game. EQ2 was a good game for what it is and it is still going strong for a lot of people. Planetside was a bunch of fun as well. So SOE made some mistakes in judgement, so do a lot of other companies. That doesn't remove the fact that they have made games that a lot of people really enjoyed. I am no where near a fanboy of DC or SOE but I like DCUO. It's exactly what they claimed it to be with all included they claimed would be there, and it's by far more polished than most mmo's released.

DCUO will not fail - I'll put $100 on it that this game is around for years.

You can't purchase a game based on expectations of what you will or will not get out of the game.  I can't say that I'll be getting 6 months of continuous playtime out of this game,  but I can say that the time I do spend will be worth the cost that I spent on it.

If SOE never comes through with the monthly updates then at least the price of the box was worth it.  If SOEs monthly updates are just 2 extra missions, maybe I can unsub and come back in 6 months when they have 12 extra missions and consider that 15 dollars like DLC to any number of single player games I play.

I believe the game will do well.  I think the playerbase is fairly broad launching on two platforms, and I think in 6 months down the line we'll see a very dedicated community.

In truth though this game will find it hard to keep subscriptions this year.  If Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars TOR make good on their launch dates, I see a lot of games taking a hit in players.  Plus, if TES: V launches this year, a lot of RPG fans will be very, very busy.

So you started this thread to, what, ignore everyone?

I think launch will see quite a few box sales based on the IP alone; with subs tapering off after the first month like almost every other game. After six months, i predict that the game will have a sub base of about 300k and that is where they will stay. If content amount improves and we see some nice, larger expansions (coast city, star city, more mentors, more powers, ect) then I can easily see this game going over 1M subs. But not real soon.

Personally I have no problem with SOE, I have had a sub to at least one of their games for at least 7 years now (yes SWG was one of them). While I hate what they did to the game I'm not a 'cut of my nose to spite my face' kind of person. If I think I'll like a game I buy and try it.

OT which leads me to a question if I buy today, when can we play? Is there an early start?

If you are not bored of WoW now, how in the world can you possibly get bored with any other game?  Your mind is already geared for boredom.

There are many things to do in WoW compared to most other games. The only one that I know of that has just as much to do as WoW is Final Fantasy XI. Also, WoW was made correctly. Why do I say this? It's really easy, out the 6~ (+/- a few flings) exs I've had in the past few years they have all been able to get into WoW. If I throw them into Final Fantasy XI, they'll hate games forever (tried it with 2 exs, they never played games again after).

Also, look at the amount of subs WoW has, Blizzard is doing something right whether or not we want to admit it. And hell they should be because they're making half a million per month and I highly doubt it costs then more than a few million to keep the business up.

Oh, and the most important part, I am a social person. All of my close friends are on WoW and we're all in the same guild + do runs regularly. We will occasionally game hop (this is not a game anyone is hopping to except myself and maybe my gf) but always end up back in WoW simply because there is ALWAYS someone there waiting for me or them. I'm sorry that you don't share the same social experience.

WHAT preorder says there's a head start?  As far as I know, the game is out on Tuesday and that's when servers go live.

I don't.  I simply can't e-befriend 20-something year olds that still say "lulz" and "1337".  I can't get into the remedial trade chat banter.   Then again, I'm a pretty smart guy.  I guess that's why Warcraft doesn't appeal to me.

Even though I really hate SOE for ruining SWG(yes another pre-cu vet), i've been considering getting DCUO just because SOE is one of the veteran MMO developers and the standards for MMOs have really shot down in the past 6 years.. I think SOE will always be one of the top developers in the MMO industry as much as they screw up and maybe they actually did learn from their mistakes...

i will actually wait till it's released though to hear more opinions on the topic. I'm not in any rush to make a mistake on another MMO. I think launch will be one of the best to date knowing SOE's reputation (minus VG's poor launch)

  • jpnolejpnole Member UncommonPosts: 1,698

Loved DCU throughout beta up until the last patch that made it impossible to solo. Well just difficult.... if you've been in beta since the beginning you know what I mean.

  • KruulKruul Member UncommonPosts: 482

I think it will do quite well to be honest. They do have some balancing to do with PVP but I had a hell of a time beta testing it. It's the best work to come out of SOE in a long long time

The flaw in your logic, and the reason why stating that you're smart was a bad idea because you just proved you...well, I'll let the others say it, is that no where did I mention our age or did I say they were "e-friends". Here, let me run you through a few examples

David: mechanical engineer and electrical engineer graduate, known him since high school

Aidan: 3D animations specialist, known since high school

Jacob: same engineering background as David, known since high school

Barath: met recently, software engineering/development graduate degree

Believe me when I say this, we are ALL way above average in many ways; that includes income levels, school marks, cars currently owned, etc.

There are a few females in the group as well that have been models for universities. No one goes around flaunting this shit (except me) because this is the internet. Don't post again here unless you want me to rip apart your lack of logic in a much harsher manner; and believe me, logic is my strong point; I can program up to 9D arrays without having to think.

agree agree agree, since WoW, or better yet since 2004, everything else has just been lacking in depth and quality. I have some 'faith' in SOE to actually deliver a decent product this time around though but i'm definitely gonna wait to hear what the playerbase has to say about it before making a purchase.
