Soooo I was invited to Rift beta 3 which was quite enjoyable.  I did my job and posted feedback and a bug or two.  I wasn't quite sold on the game by the time the last beta finished, so was looking forward to trying PvP on the warfronts tonight to hopefully at least go towards making my mind up.

Now while I appreciate my invitiation to beta 3 didn't mean I would be invited to subsequent beta's, I find it difficult to think of a reason why they wouldn't re-invite me either.  I mean whats the point in inviting someone for just one?  If they want proper testing and feedback they need a regular group of players surely, with addtional testers as they go along to get some good stress testing going.

Personally I think this beta is more of a marketing ploy.  Invite someone in for one beta hoping they get hooked on the taster, then let them sit and stew.  Oh whats this news?  TADAAAA "hey you can pre-order the game and be included in all future beta's"

I think it's a bit shallow personally and a silly way to go about serious testing.  It's just a ploy to get pre-orders I'm thinking.

I'd be interested to know how many other's have been invited to one beta then pretty much ignored?

Have a good weekend those of you who are actually testing.

Wolf...

Oh and P.S. They could have at least let me patch up to the latest client just in case I get invited to one of the others.  This beta stage alone is 1.8Gb on top.  How big is it going to be if I got another invite in 2 beta's time??

Yes beta is a marketing ploy. Companies with big budgets hire people to beta test their game to make sure its in good shape before showing it to people. Because people will load up a beta and then 5 mins later write a huge post about how it sucks on game forums around the internet.

Call me lucky ,but I have been in all 3 previous and just waiting to get home to check out the the Beta 4. No I did not have a V.I.P. code, but had a few codes to apply to my account.

Of course the pre-order is a marketing ploy though, also a great deal if you already have decided you enjoy this game.

I am in the same boat. I just got in through the RIFT web site and have been lucky enough to be in all 4 betas. I did also make sure that i did give comments, likes & dis likes, bugs etcc when ever i found these to be relivant.

I have been waiting for the PvP and this will help me to decide if i have to go buy 3 copies (wife,me & friend)

I see were you are coming from and would agree with you if not for the fact that Trion has made such large changes to Rift based on feed back from each Beta. Each Beta changes a little bit and even during Beta they patch the game so it really seems they are using the Beta to the fullest at the moment. Whether this will continue through the other betas I don't know, but if it does I think they'll have won a lot of people over.

I was in 3 and havn't received an invite for 4, i would say it is a little paranoid to say its deliberate, as we dont know their selection system, but it does seem a bit unfare. However it is good psychology if it is deliberate as I am very seriously thinking of pre-ordering, as I was really counting on beta 4 this weekend.

  • BashirBashir Member Posts: 85

yeah, i just got into the 3rd and that's it.  not going to pre-order a game just for beta either, so i'll probably just wait and see how the launch is.

  • japojapo Member Posts: 306

    I am not a VIP....and was invited to betas 1, 2, and 3.  Then I pre-ordered..,.and naturally got into #4.

Received my first invite to it today but not sure whether i'll play or not. I'm not a big fan of WoW and WAR could never hold me for a month or two, this game seems a mix of both.

Well.....you have a chance to play for free...so you cand decide yourself if it's worth it.  Never base your opinions solely on what you hear.  Investigate and discover for yourself.

You are giving them too much credit.  They have already stated their process on Facebook and other sites.  Everyone with a VIP is automatically guaranteed a slot.  Then they calculate how many free slots they have left, and an automaticed process randomly selects from the remaining non VIP pool.  The devs themself probably have no idea that you were in a previous beta and they don't really care.  You are just a random number from the thousands upon thousands that applied.

I didn't get a VIP code and have gotten into all 4 betas so far. I've never submitted any bugs but have posted on the forum a couple of times. They did say beta process for non VIP was going to be random. I'm pretty suprised I've been in all 4.

They have exactly that. They have a regular group of players who all have VIP keys, most of whom had to work to get their keys and therefore have some vested interest in the game. All the rest are filler to stress the servers. If you wanted to be guaranteed access to all 4 betas, you simply had to try a little to get a VIP key. I got one in the second round of MMORPG giveaways.

Rift closed beta testing is more like open betas of the past. They already had a large pool of ' alpha' testers that are more like what you would expect to see in a regular beta program. So yeah all the VIP code giveaways and the whole beta process is part of their marketing plan and hype buildup. These guys aren't new to MMOs and they know most beta testers today apply just so they can get a feel for the game, rather than help improve it before launch.

    They are extremely crafty.

I signed up a veyr long time ago when beta sign up became first available on thier website. I have had invites to all 3 previous betas.

Why is beta 4 different? You might ask.

Since Beta 3 they have announced official release dates and special pre-order packages that entitle all pre-orders early access to the game as part of pre-order.

The first 3 betas were for hype generation since they were confident enuff that once people tried it they would like it and spread the buzzz.

The 4th beta they are also introducing core PvP portions of the game and anyone that participates in the PvP warfronst has a chance to win a great prize.

Fact is that they probably had more people pre-order since pre-orders went live with them and all thier partners than they had originally anticipated. This makes the number of servers needed go up and the space for non-paying players shrink.

    lol That is pretty whack.

I wrote a pretty big post on what i dont like about the game during beta 3 (also what i did like) but i basically told them i will not be playing this game.

I got beta 4 invite just this morning.

    I was like haha.

I will give it a go again tho, why not?

many digital game download sites were giving away loads of free VIP beta keys, and I mean loads!

was easy to get into all the betas without pre-order.

    Although I have pre-ordered anyways :)

I follow up on a ton of mmo sites and i havent personally watched for rift keys since i got into the beta 3 event but i definitely watched them before that. Facebook and twitter codes were literally gone within seconds. Massively had like 500 at one point and they were gone within 5 minutes.

    Crazay.

Wasn't it this game where they stated themselves on their forum that the beta weekends were for promotion. I could swear i read it a while back.

At least they're honest about it.

When are people going to learn.

If you like MMO's and want to play in betas, then sign up with fileplanet. You never have to preorder and get into any beta you want to.

I think it's just the luck of the draw. I was invited to all of them and I don't have a VIP code. I did test and submit a decent amount feedback/reports of bugs so perhaps that was in my favor? Don't know.

I have been invited to every rift beta event so far. Without a vip beta key, so you tell me? Personlly I like it but I probably wont preorder it I may wait a few months after its been released before I even think about getting it. I've been playing these types of mmos for years. I think its time for me to go in a different direction. We'll see tho. I'll keep testing of course for the sake of finding bugs and such.
