Leveling is definetly not easier than WoW. Infact it doesnt feel like its changed since a year ago. I'm a level 40 cleric and I did an SR run today and it took forever to get just one bar of experience.

Maybe I'm doing somthing wrong maybe SR isn't even good experience but thats what I remember and thats what people are telling me to do. If its not somone tell me where I go so I can hit 41 and feel like I didnt just throw 15 dollars away.

I don't want everything handed to me on a silver platter but fuck man seriously I expected 2 weeks of play to hit 55 from where I already was but if I have to do SR for another 6 levels at the rate I gain experience fuck this Im unsubbing again. And KT was worth maybe 3 bars of exp with a 22hr cooldown. So in the time I started back up to now I have gained 1/4 of a level. I've been back for roughly 2 days. Oh and I owe the soul healer about 300k.

Cool a game that you don t level multiple times in a day. You just convince me to re sub

One of the slowest ways of leveling in Aion is doing it in instances.  Instances are for loot not for fast xp.  If you want fast xp do the quests.

  • SenadinaSenadina Member UncommonPosts: 896

Yeah, do coin quests. Over and over and over......... Aion actually is giving more experience than when I unsubbed, but anyone expecting it to be even close to WoW levelling is deluded or listening to liars. Aion is a grind, a pretty grind that has gotten ever so slightly less grindy, but not by much.

You can also do the solo instance that IS rather good xp.  One thing I have a feeling that happened in your group is you had some players a few levels higher than you.  That can REALLY cut down on xp.  Otherwise yes coin quests and of course the gold quests.  Don't ignore them... miragents requires all of them finished.  While NC has moved the xp up slightly per kill it's not the instances that got the real boost(besides drop rate) it's the quests.  You'll find yourself making more kinah and getting some better than before rewards.  50+ is a breeze so really you're in the hardest part of the game leveling wise atm.  Good luck it'll seem all too short once you hit the tredmil for end game.^^

The leveling between 50-55 was not so hard. Did it decent fast in solo mode with 2 weeks of full day time gaming. But trying to get an alt from 40-50 still feels a big pain however.

  • thamighty213thamighty213 Member UncommonPosts: 1,637

As others have stated your in the worst part of Aion for leveling.

50-55 is a breeze but those 40-50 are a bit of a mare fortunately its the one area that there is some reasonable content more than enough to level with.

This mentality is great IF the game has a journey worth the time you want to spend in it.  Aion's journey is boring.  Leveling should be faster to get to the "meat" of the game.  All depends on the game and what is offered at each level.

Last great "journey" game I played was FFXI and the first time through LOTRO.

To each their own. I agree with FFXI, but LOTRO to me was very boring. Aion I enjoy the leveling as well.

So it sound like you came back and expected the game to be in easy mode? I think you expect to level too fast. Its not the games' fault.

I should have put that a different way. IWhat I meant was that he should not have expected to come back and it be like WOW's leveling. There is not the same amount of content in WOW as Aion. So it only makes sense that it take you longer.

  • NC4OMNC4OM Member Posts: 16

I  recently returned to the game myself, I'm enjoying it a lot.  The leveling is slow, the game seems deep, and I am in no rush to reach end game, this is odd for me because I like to power level.  I was trying to find a highly customizable character, pvpve, craft important, player housing game. This comes closer then most (older genre games excluded, I'm talking "new" mmos). No player housing but there have been whispers, and I'm not sure of how end game crafting is compared to loot because i'm still new.

I've played a lot of mmo's and some just weren't for me, example EVE. I get the game, just wasn't my cup of tea. It would seem to me you want things this game doesn't provide.

My buddies at work asked me what it was like (Aion), I described it as "Adult WoW"

Good luck on your search, I know it took me a while to find something I liked.

    Oh and GO RAVENS!

If the design philosophy is there should be x amount of content to get you to max level then the more content you have the longer it *could* take to level and the less content there is the quicker you *should* level.

If the design philosophy is that leveling should take x amount of time to get to max level then the amount of content isn't intrinsic to the leveling process.

To me most western games follow the first philosophy, content is provided to level you up. If there isn't enough content then exp rewards are boosted to make it so the content gets you there. If the game has extra content you can have parallel paths to level or they can lower exp rewards to push you to the extra content.

Korean games seem to follow the time spent philosophy. Some content exists to guide you but you are expected to spend x amount of time outside of guided content grinding.

WoW could easily get away with making leveling slower because they have the content to keep people doing different things while leveling. Aion actually *should* (if it wanted to appeal to western audiences) have faster leveling than WoW specifically because there is less content to spread out the leveling process over. If a game has limited content *and* slow leveling, it's a recipe for boredom.

........... have you guys even played aion since 2.0?

Seriously thoe, if you sitting there thinking leveling is slow at 40 it probably becasue you came back and jumped ona  toon u already made and completely forgot about the rest of the game. i actualy QUIT aion because the income/drop/exp boosts ruined it for me.

Dont belive me? make a new toon.. and then try and complete all the content in the game within level.. truth? YOU CANT ive tried.. but after the exp boosts i literaly had to cancel out over 200x levels in that game (killing myself over.. and over.. and over to drop my exp down to 0 for that level) just to be able to complete 1/3 of the damn game.

    Money issues? pick up alch..

exp issues? actualy explore and complete the quests...

Gear issues? use alch to get enough money and soon enough your runnign around in 100% gold gear.. or grind coin quests..

Also, if you dont know how to make money in that game.. hell on my main all i have to do is run a instance in balauria and BOOM. 1 run = 3mil kinah +. OR i could craft up pots with morphing and wala.. can amke 75 mil in a week....

im sorry for those of you who are starting and not understanding.. but i played since closed beta up untill november and honestly its a joke... once you figure out how things work the games a cakewalk.. I actualy MISS the way the game was at launch.. atleast then when leveling threw there was enough quest content to keep me at the level of the quests i was doing..not getting above 10 levels higher then the content im suppost to be starting in the next zone just from completeing the one before.. its sad...

also to the op.. at level 40 if you run threw kroms trial once a day you can get 1/4 of a level per run. also running sr mid to get exp you need to keep people within 4 levels of you.. a group of 40 - 44 will get you alot of exp.. also the monkey drops boots down instead of the gunner in upper, gunner now drops pants. Other than that there should be a HELL of alot of quests for you down in the lefpharist area in morheim, along with mist mane stuffs and the area surrounding. On top of there theres alot of content for a level 40 out at the besfer refugee camp, and the camp where u go into kroms trial, also at frost mane. basicly everythign in east belusalan, southen aswell. Also! lol if your side (elmo or asmo) own any of the upper inner forts there are realy good repeat quests there.. ap/kinah/exp rewars.. same if they DONT own the forts, at the towers for the fort (if your side dont own it)  there are normaly about 5 or so quests at each tower..... i can go on for hours about all the stuff you CAN do.. but ill stop this post here

I was trying to be a little generic in my post cuz I actually don't know a lot about Aion. I bought it in December, got to level 18 and got bored. No mount + shitty templar dps + no quest helper was just too boring when put together. All I really want to do is run group instances not solo kill 10 mob quests over and over. Investment was just too high to get to where I want to be in that game.

I also think not allowing flying in most quest areas was a bad decision.

I played Aion back at launch and more recently after the expac and found it a little on the tedious side but I enjoyed myself and don't regret the expenditure.

I must say if they opened up more of the world to flight that would make a huge difference.

I don't pretend to know what desigh philosophy is of every game but It doesn't make sense for WOW (a 6 year old game) to have a big leveling curve. As Aion gets older there will be more and more content added and the leveling curve will be lessened to help new players level and get caught up with their friends or at least that's how I picture it.

And not all Korean games follow the same formula, have you tried them all. I reall wish people would stop generalizing over things they heard people talk about but never "fully" expericenced. Almost all MMO's have dungeons and most times they are outside of "guided content". Does that mean your grinding?

  • ftAnPucr9ftAnPucr9 Member Posts: 26

The leveling being fast or slow is all relative. Ofc the time it takes to level in aion is nothing for a hardcore full time gamer. Just some numbers, I recently started an alt, took 100 hours of hardcore leveling to reach level 40. Now I expect over 100 hours more to reach level 50 and another 100 hours after that to get to level 55. So about total 300+ hours to make a character to highest level is what it takes and thats hardcore solo gaming and not sitting idle around waiting for groups and such. Is it fast or slow? It was ok with my main but I must say its a pain to do this over again with a new alt character.

  • Lathander81Lathander81 Member Posts: 611

Well unless you are in close level with people for instances its not that great of xp. Questing is an excellent way to gain levels. Another thing I noticed is people skip a lot of mobs in instances...like KT. Why not just kill more mobs unless you are in a rush. Overall, just like in any other MMO questing and grinding are the fastest way to level. I think Aion gets an unfair shake when there are MMO's out there where you take way longer to level.

  • VikingGamerVikingGamer Member UncommonPosts: 1,350

Do watch your levels when you are in group. I ran the numbers a little over a year ago for the 30-40 Fire temple range and the lowbie definitly gets raped for exp if they are more than 5 levels apart from the highbie. If you are within 5 levels you will actually be slowly catching up to the leader. The lowbie still gets less raw exp but you get a greater percentage of your level's bar so you are slowly catching up. The sweet spot is actually 3 level apart where the lowbie is catching up at the fastest rate.

On the other hand, when you are 6 more more levels apart the lowbie is actually falling behind and for each level beyond 6 the raw share of exp that the lowbie gets is getting cut in half. FOR EACH LEVEL. by they time you get to 8 or 9 levels out the lowbie is getting almost nothing. Always, always, always stay within 5 levels unless they only reason you are going is to get geared say with legion mates passing the loot to you.

    All die, so die well.

This is you're best friend if it still works.. I was the first lv 50 cleric on fregion and this is how i did it.. I took me less then a few weeks (8hr+ each day though) of kiteing elites in idratu to get to lvl 40-50.. It's boring but the drops are nice and the xp is way better then running SR.. As a cleric you're gonna wanna hit them with DoTs and root occasionally to run away and heal.. Eventually when you get to the higher lvls you'll just be able to tank and spank them without needing to root and heal.

Ofcourse, at lvl 50 i was introduced to the real grind of AION which is miragents.. I'am willing to grind elites 8hrs a day for weeks at a time; but i will not grind POINTLESSLY for bloodstains only to be pwnt by the random number god 6times in a row.

Yea I have no time to do that grinding for golds when they drop out of the sky now. I get by with dungeon and PvP gear which is way easier to get.

Are you lvl 50 (or 55 now i guess)? Because all i know is when i hit 50 and failed on miragents so many times there were people that were 45ish when i started working on my miragents that had it by the time i got to my 3rd failed attempt because they got lucky on their first try.. Those people pwnt me, it didn't matter if it was a templar and i was a cleric if you had miragents and i didn't you would kill me in less then 2seconds..

Thats why i got so frustrated and sold off my account.. I worked so hard grinding to 50 so i could "enjoy" the end game and be one of the 1st 50's to roll around the abyss and roflstomp faces.. But i was introduced to an even bigger grind and the only "end game" i got was dredgion+DP... Eventually all that grinding met nothing as others that were originally so many lvls below me ended up getting lucky on miragents and pwning me, people that didn't even put in the work i did lvling wise and bloodstain wise..

If miragents still has the OP bonuses it does then i doubt any gear (besides maybe lvl 50 abyss gear) will come close to touching in pvp.. I've seen the new lv 55 gold gear and miragents still is a lot better thx to its gear bonuses.. I don't know, for a game that was as heavly pvp based as AION was (when it originally launched atleast) it just seemed stupid to make you're end game so OP and needed but so annoying to get; its not like we are paying to play the game per hour like they do in korea.

With that said.. AION is still my most memorable MMORPG.. The launch was awsome for me.. The pvp i did from 25-40 was epic.. Exploreing the abyss and ganking people 10 lvls below me all the time.. It was a good time to be a cleric that was so high in lvls compared to anyone else.. But slowly, months into the game my friends started disapearing as they got to higher lvls.. Most of them got to 50 and then realized miragents was just another huge grind and gave up.. These were people i spent 8-12hrs a day chatting to in vent for months at a time and talked to more then my family  lol.. People i spent weeks farming world bosses with, grinding mobs with, doing instances with... Ugh, i knew it was all too good to be true.. AION's end game just ruined it for me and everyone else in my guild, within a few weeks of almost all our members hitting end game the legion just couldnt go on with the population drop.. I helped take SoV from #11 legion to #2 for elyos; then watched as we dropped from #2 with 100+ members to non-existant and having 0 members.

Bad memories.. Mixed with good memories.. That'll be AION in a nutshell for me.. To many bad memories for me to give it another shot, but a lot of good memories so that i can include as being my #1 favorite MMO to pvp in.
