I've not played myself but I imagine the BALANCE for Rift events is variability in frequency and to avoid predictability. You need quieter times for the chaotic ones to be more enjoyable. You need to have no idea what will happen when or where BUT pure randomness becomes just as monotonous as no randomness. So there needs to be some pattern/order/sense to make things interesting.

It sounds like this is absolutely possible with this game with a single dev/GM being able to toy with the spawning rates. Can this be done on the fly?

I am thinking I will indeed try this game, with the phiosophy of avoiding non-story quests, just crafting and exploring and letting the event system pull me along. I was told in another thread (one about quality of the quests) that this would be viable gameplay.

It is viable... I lvled up to 27 in the last beta with warfronts, dungeon runs and Rift Raiding... I still have most of my quests still but didn't do them cause i got better gear upgrades and xp from dungeons, Rift medallions and PvP rewards..

     ^^ This

I found just about the right amount of mix between Rifts and questing. I did more MMO gaming by level 13 in this game than I ever did in WOW (outside of raiding). Once I threw in some Warfronts, I found myself easily having mroe to do than time to do it. Bottom line for me . . .

it was fun. And thats what I want from my games.

Gaming since Avalon Hill was making board games.

Played SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, LOTRO, Rift, Vanguard, WoW, SWTOR, TSW, Tera
Tried Aoc, Aion, EQII, RoM, Vindictus, Darkfail, DDO, GW, PotBS

    Whats cool about this thread?

Firstly, no trolls (rabenwolf springs to mind :P), secondly, it really does look like trion are using these beta's in part to ascertain the right level of rift/invasion swarms. It really does look like they are close to the sweet spot. the real biggy is balancing it at launch, which of course is a case of suck it and see type scenario.

My point is they are on the case, I'm still gonna hold out somewhat though (Dungeon siege 3 releases end of march should give me time to see the real deal about rift over a month from post launch).

Keep posting folks, I love reading good stuff about this title :)

Sometimes you log in and really have your mind set on something and that's when the constant invasions become annoying.

Yes, it can be adjusted on the fly.  They have triggered some crazy stuff during beta.

And the GM's tend to be pretty communicative.  Before they started doing the first big invasion they said in chat, something to the effect of, "you guys want to see something cool?".  We had no idea the whole world was about to explode.  They joke with players in chat and certainly don't seem to be shy at all.

But, normally the rifts and invasions are determined by the combat engine.  It takes into account the number of players in an area and then triggers events to match.  Find the interview with Scott H after the first big invasions in beta.  He talks briefly about how it works and shares that they had never been seen outside of internal testing.

Walking into Gloamwood sealed the deal for me, beautiful zone and well designed...

I like this game, I'd like to take a couple of vacation days off of work and just sit around playing Rift watching Ghost Adventures while eating yogurt and drinking coffee.  Trion have my babies plz.

About quest hubs being taken over and people asking in chat for help that's where MMO community comes in it's a wild crazy idea but on faeblight people would actually help others clear them out.  Right now I am having a blast loved your story OP I went the safe route and crafted in Sanctum.

My biggest concern is really 6 months out the population will have moved on low level zone population won't be that high so what is going to be the hook for new players picking up the game.  Right now it's all good tons of people to clear the zonewide events in silverwood and it's really exciting to do so but what is going to addict the new guys?  I hope there is some kind of counter balance in place for this so any new people get a rewarding experience and stay with the game.

Well the rifts scale to the amount of players in a zone. So I would assume 6 months from now when most of us are max level rifts will still be enjoyed solo/small group like we enjoy them now with 50-100+ people. Also the quests will still be there, crafting, the soul system, cross server Warfronts and dungeons, collections/achievements so I still think new players will have a ton to do.

Nice writeup OP and exactly what this games to break the mundane, routine that exists in other game. Hope they keep it up and not make it easy-mode when released.

Yeah I just don't see the mind blowing thing happening 6 months out to really get people into it that are new.  Which is one of the reason people are so into right now how many games have 2 dragons going after players near the city at level 20.  I see chat going like this

"Hey I thought this game was a world of chaos but I only see 2 rifts on my map?"

"Yeah just wait until you get to level 50 it's epic dude."

I know it's based on players in the zone but just don't see the hook down the road is all.

I honestly can't tell you what will hook or keep people playing. I know where I'm concerned I'm much more interested in the fucking kick ass soul system. That's the reason I got into rift. shit like rifts, invasions, collections , dungeons (which are epic!!), crafting & questing were honestly a surprise. I had no idea every freaking mechanic would be fun to mess with. Maybe new players will feel the same way? Maybe it won't be 100% about the rifts.

I agree on soul system probably my favorite part I just see alot of people going on about the rift system which I really enjoy personally but it's not the end all be all for me.  I have purposely not done any dungeons past ROF and IT want to save it for live there are so many other things I can test right now.
