The hubris surrounding this game reminds me too much of the hysteria before the World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, and Final Fantasy XI.
See, I can do it too.
Just because people threw a fit about a game and it did poorly doesn't set precedence for any other game.
You know people threw a huge fit about World of Warcraft when it was coming out too.
There's plenty of games that do just fine and end up doing so for quite a while.
But lets just continue to postulate one way or another for no particular reason, other than we want to.
Actually you can't. All three games you mentioned had a long delvelopment and beta process and launched with enough content to keep players playing for more than a single month.
All three games I mentioned had a ton of DEVOTED FANS expressing concern that the games needed work only to be ignored, TO THE GAME CREATORS cost.
How about next time you post you actualy list some of your own ideas as to why I'm wrong and this is a brilliant game rather than making more puff posts about why everybody else's opinions suck?
DCU has been in closed beta for a long time. Now WoW was in OB for a week, CoH didn't have any content other then rp and costumes, and finally FF 11 was beta'ed mostly in japan and was more of a success in japan then in western markets.
How about next time you post you don't insult people just because you don't like the game like they do.

The hubris surrounding this game reminds me too much of the hysteria before the launches of Hellgate London, Star Trek Online, and All Points Bulletin.
I personally played the beta of DCUO and feel that while it is a fun and pretty game, it is too content light to keep me entertained long enough to justify me spending any money on it. And I feel that just like Cryptics assembly line MMO creatiing system, this lack of substance is intentional. Sony knows that they can do a half baked job and still laugh all the way to the bank with this big name IP.
However then as now the gamers suffereing from MMO starvation do not want to hear any rational argument about what they hope will be their next savior from having to actually interact with real live people.
Oh well its your time and money people. If you want to waste it on yet another empty hole in the sand in which to burry your head, its really not my business. However after the pathetic and continuous stream of crap games produced in the past two years I would think that some of you would wise up and get tired of being given far less than the value of both your patronage and your currency.
I paid 60 bucks for Pac-man on Atari 2600, it was horrid. 50 bucks for this won't hurt. Say I work an hour of OT, buy the game and get 40-50 hours of "fun" from it, not too shabby. It's irksome to know publishers cut every corner they can to charge you fifty bucks but in the end it's not like I'm shooting money out of a cannon.
P.S. I'm not really disagreeing with your message just the severity. And I agree with you, we have been trained to embrace suck. Consumers as a whole are horrid enablers.
Well thanks for this mature and rational response. I agree my post is severe and probably unjustly so. But I'm tired of seeing people on these forums voice rational concerns only to be flamed to death by posters who claim this game is the best thing since sliced bread, but never actually back up their opinon with any real reasons they feel this is so. It seems that what is good for the goose is not what is good for the gander.
Constructive critisim is not hatemongering. People complaining this game could be better are not saying so becuase they hate the game and wish it to fail., they wish it to be better.
As to the money, no 50 or 60 dollars will not have much effect on your financial situation. All those 50 or 60 dollars, per person, combined can and already are having a negative effect on the quality of the entire gaming genre.
Its funny that you should mention Packman. Take a look at how much arcade gaming progressed in less than fifteen years. Then take a look at how little the far more complex and technically superior, and massively better funded platform of MMOs has progressed in the same amount of time.

Fact that it only has 500+ threads on MMORPG.com, which explains the hype, interest and how successful launch the game will have.
Fact that many of the current "bored" players decided to try and abandon it in late 2011 due to SWTOR, GW2 etc.
Fact that DCUO sales and subs have direct impact on the future of the game, its content updates and development.
Fact that too many players are spread out atm with other indie/nitch MMORPG's and that is like 45% of the MMORPG market, rest 55% are all still in WOW.
The only player base I see DCUO attracting right now is players left without any single/MMORPG game atm. Also this is a very short period before the big "SWTOR/RIFT/GW2" arrive. Many of the superhero fans are also already supporting other MMORPG's where they invested their time in like CoH/CoX, CO, which are also another competitor, especially how CO going F2P within a month or so.
If SOE decided to make itself more competitive with some F2P model or cheaper sub plan as well as cheaper box sales past launch it might've lured more players later on. SOE should be realistic that DCUO will be mainly considered a backup MMORPG due to its heavy competition this year. SOE will need to do more than just getting attractive IP and some actors to deliver a quality MMORPG if it wants to attract the mature/experienced vet gamers.
It's crystal clear what kind of audience mainly the game will have atm and it doesn't surprise me that two of my friends clearly showed no interest in it when asked them to try it despite the cheap promotion that ends tomorrow.
DCUO only advantages are the fact that everything else is bad if not worse that's released, so players like me from total boredom would end up spending extra $ to kill few months. It will grab extra subs from the PS3 world, but not a lot. It took me 3 weeks to consume Cataclysm, but i'm aware many will take a month or two at least before uninstalling it and considering something else. So yea sad days for DCUO.
The beta was in a really bad time when Cata was launched so I was too busy enjoying it that I completely forgot on my DCUO beta key in my mail...
I hope SOE will learn from this experience and come back even stronger in 2012+
Fortunately i had never played Champions Online or City of Heroes until after i played the DCUO beta and fell in love with it.
After seeing how much i enjoyed DCUO i had to check out these other 2 games to see what theyre like since thats obviously a similar game and competition. I had thought about checking both games out before but never did, DCUO made me more interested.
I didnt play either CO or CoH more than 2 hours. Personally i was bored the second i started questing. I dont mean to insult the 2 games, just after playing the DCUO game i could not get into either of these other 2. This is after just quitting 6 years of WoW.
If i had played either of those games first and had invested time into them id probably be a lot more hesitant about DCUO.
Whatevs, i know that i love DCUOs game play style and everything about it that i had seen in the beta.
I know ill get my moneys worth. I had no expectations of this game when i got the beta just so ya know.

While you might think the money spent on DCUO is a "waste" its easy to see a number of others that tested the game think otherwise, myself included. While you might not get enough enjoyment out of the game for you to spend any money on it, not everyone has that view.
I personally don't put reparative connotations on my opinions when deciding whether or not I'm going to purchase a game. If I say a game is fun, meaning I have fun playing it, I feel like that is enough of a reason to spend my money on it.
On a side note, talking about "lack of substance" really only has bearing here under subjective terms yet again. While you may feel like there is no lasting appeal, I see otherwise. I've already been in beta for 2 months, and played roughly 3 to 5 hours a day and still had things I hadn't done at the end of those two months.

And some of us are tired of seeing people make over the top, unsubstantiated claims and toting it as fact.
You have a funny way of determining what is constructive and what isn't.
"However then as now the gamers suffereing from MMO starvation do not want to hear any rational argument about what they hope will be their next savior from having to actually interact with real live people."
Is the above statement constructive? Just seems to pigeon hole anyone that disagrees with you into the label of "Irrantional MMO starved gamer" and anti-social on top of that.
"Oh well its your time and money people. If you want to waste it on yet another empty hole in the sand in which to burry your head, its really not my business."
Constructive again? Again, you're just saying anyone that disagrees with you is burying their head in the sand and wasting their money willfully.
"However after the pathetic and continuous stream of crap games produced in the past two years I would think that some of you would wise up and get tired of being given far less than the value of both your patronage and your currency."
So, again anyone that purchases the game isn't a very wise person and evidently foolish with their money.
These don't seem like constructive statements and it's almost all of your original post. What kind of response were you expecting to illicit when you were taking pot shots at DCUO supporters the whole time?

Your statement wasn't constructive at all.
You aren't innocent.
lets just wait and see and come back here in like a month...only then we can say if the game was worth it
