Perpetuum Impressions. (Bad)

ElendilasXElendilasX Member Posts: 243

So played for few weeks so far. A lot more then most games which came out last year. And I say that is enough for me.

I am mainly miner and mining is total fail in perpetuum. You mine same material all the time. Same place. You dont need to pay good attention if you are not on beta (pvp) island. Mining in pvp island is almost useless as you need huge group to be safe and to survive. But with current population it is almost impossible. There is only 1 material pvp only which value isnt too great. 2x-3x bigger then non-pvp materials which are abundant. Ofcourse you need to haul as soon as you fill in pvp area which it makes almost same as non-pvp profit wise. And in non-pvp there is no chance of losing bot which happens quite often in pvp (and bots+eq costs like 15M for second best which you can get in 2-3days of gameplay, ~30M which you get skills for in month). Also you can make shitload of money from just killing npc bots. So pvp mining is useless.

EP is account specific and charachter which is very annoying. I would to mine, but sometimes enjoy pvp action. But for that I need to pay extra 10$/month.. Hell if I will...

Missions are done poorly and faction reputation is even worse. Rewards vs time spent is horrible. They are not worth doing except if you planning on manufacturing/refining. And even then you will grind 2-3 missions at same time, which are like: run there and back.

Item selection is very small and useless, as all tiers of same item require same skills. Prices are also low. So you can always be equipped with best things which you can. So you dont get feeling that you are advancing.

Mob spawns are always in same location and there is ~5-6 max of mobs/location. It is always the same. It is annoying.

PvP is somewhat fun, but with such small world most people stay in pve islands. In Outpost sieges you wont see clashing armies of bots. There is always one side who is taunting and running back/forward trying to lure single idiots. PvP ops are usually boring as you wont find anyone for hours. TBH didnt done much of this so dont know for sure.

This game might be good if you play 1-2hours/day. It doesnt take much to enjoy pvp (if it is your only goal that is awesome). If you are casual player (as I said before 1-2 hours/day) and enjoy pvp. You might find it enjoyable.    If you are miner, i suggest staying away from perpetuum. If you want pve: stay away. If you want to socialize, go play eve as it has larger community and same things as perpetuum but done better.

I don’t quite get some of your remarks in regards to mining.  Did switching from Ark to Bist give you the feeling that the routine was changing up?  I prefer the PO way, as I know where to find what it is that I need.

Your perception that you need a huge group to mine on beta is not correct, though you do need to be welcomed by the alliances that control the islands.  The other night with one friend (both of us have two accounts) we mined quite safely on beta.

Your issue with EP being account specific is also somewhat odd to me, as I’m not aware of any game that allows you to level two characters on the same account simultaneously.

Now, as far as your opinion regarding missions, I’d have to say that you’re spot on.  That particular area needs a lot of work.  Missions are not my cup of tea, but for the long term health of the game I’d have to agree that the system needs some serious improvements.

With item selection, what you say is pretty much true, but in a PvP focused game I have to say that I like it that way.  I do not under any circumstances want battles to be decided by equipment, so this system works well for me.  Different strokes for different folks.

Your view of outpost sieges is sometimes true and other times not.  I’ve been to very dull ones, and some very exciting ones.

At this time “end game” is territorial control and corporate warfare, and though many areas of the game do need work, for the most part I’m enjoying it.  Your opinions are your own and with one exception I’m not here to say that you are wrong, but at the end of the day PO will appeal to some and not to others.  If I were looking for a game to play casually and solo I couldn’t see this one being it, though if you read the thread titled “A Carebear’s first look at Perpetuum” some people feel differently.  With a price of entry under $10 though, it’s still imo worthy of a look.

EP aspect: It is just their way of making extra money. But imo it repels miners from playing as killing mobs yields huge money (a lot more then begginer miner/bit less then one in riveler (not sure about second))

Items aspect: I wouldnt like either too huge difference in pvp just from super-expensive items, but there could be minor difference to encourage hardcore players. Like you could modify any item to weight 5% less, or reduce cycly time by 1-5%, or increase charge load avaialable by 20%. For that you would need some big ammount of money and it even could be considered as another manufacturing branch. Or skill implants (i think eve has those) which add like +1 (+1 for each tier) to mechanices, economics or any other attribute, but each would costs 10M min for tier1 ending at 100M for tier 4 or even more.

To that "carebear" remark I didnt understand it, do you call me carebear? If so, sorry but you wrong. Played plenty of sandboxes with open pvp and enjoyed them.

And you really cant say perpetuum is sandbox so thats why not much content. It is other way: Because there is almost no content it is called sandbox. But seeing how many people worked on it, there is huge hope that it will improve somewhat fast and well.

There is no way mining is going to be anything but boring, no matter what you do with it. That's not Perpetuum's fault, that's just mining. You mine whatever is going to make you the most money, or you mine whatever it is your corporation needs at the time, so you could end up mining the same stuff over and over again. They you haul it back and dump it or sell it.

If you're a miner and you want to mine on the PvP island, you're not going to be doing the PvP fighting anyway. Your escort group is going to be doing the fighting. You're going to be mining or running away as fast as your bot will carry you.

If all you want to do is mine, then there's no way possible for it to be anything but boring. Boring, boring, boring. That said, if you want to PvP, you'd build a primarily combat spec'd guy, but have a few points in your mining skills, but most of your points in combat skills. Your corporation isn't going to turn down your ore just because you mined 20% less than the other guys, and the market isn't going to tell you that you can't sell your ore/refined materials because you refined 20% less than the other guys. You won't make as much NIC, but you'll still make plenty, and you'll still be able to get into some PvP (put insurance on your robot, btw).

They could definitely use some help with the rep missions. Perhaps even a story mode where you travel around or something, but it's adequate for what it is...filler when you are not runnings ops for your corporation.

Really, it sounds like what you're missing is a decent, active corporation. Mining groups, PvP Mining Ops, etc. would be more fun if you weren't by yourself.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

If any game makes mining fun they deserve most innovative game of the decade. But yeah i quickly learned that perpetuum was not for me. at first i was all "omfgwafflesaucebbq!!!! EVE with wasd!! Excel spreadsheets on land!!" but i quickly got bored due to the lack of variety EVE has.

    Playing: PO, EVE
    Waiting for: WoD
Favourite MMOs: VG, EVE, FE and DDO
Any person who expresses rage and loathing for an MMO is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.

Oh no, I don’t ever throw names like carebear out there.  You mentioned the game not being good for casual mining types, and I was pointing out the thread further down the page with carebear in the title.

I don’t say that your ideas about items are wrong either, only that I like it just as it is.  I do take a bit of issue with your EP thoughts, but again, it’s a difference of opinion.  I might have been doing it wrong, but farming on alpha I didn’t find a huge discrepancy in income between my miner and my combat toon.  If anything I felt like I was doing better on my miner, but granted that’s in a Termis, which I don’t know if you ever piloted.

The only content that I feel is significantly lacking is PvE-missioning.  I’m enjoying everything else, but I am in a large corp that holds an outpost on beta.

Same as you, at first you think this is a great game that is deep and meaningful but it soon becomes apparent that after a couple of weeks the game turns out to be quite thin and shallow. Glad this has been pushed off the top spot because to be fair there are many other games (EVE included) that are far superior to this title.

My overall game rating for this was 6.6

However the miner has to be there and if the only thing mining offers them is a target on their back, they probably won't be there.

    Spot on.

Making kills easier won't get you more kills...

There is obviously reasons to mine, especially if your in a corp. Nobody has mentioned the fact that when you own a beta island you and your corp must own a fortress in order to gain money from it/ use its facilities, therefore the protection of this outpost, and it's nearby mining spots, is crucial.

You use the type of ore that your outpost is located nearest to in order to make higher lvl bots/mechs, the better the ore your outpost is located, the more high lvl things you can make.

Join a corp, it's alot of fun, and they already added new mechs in the latest patch/balances to pvp.

SWG made mining fun. And they made it fun by accentuating the aspects that are fun -- namely the exploration and the optimization -- and de-emphasizing the boring aspects (not forcing you to sit behind your computer watching a cargo hold fill).
