Blizzard has announced that over 4.7 million copies of the World of Warcraft Cataclysm expansion were sold in the month following its release on December 7, 2010. According to Blizzard's internal sales partnership statistics and its own sales data, this is a record single-month sales record for a PC title.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm was simultaneously released in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand on 7th of December , and became available in Korea and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau on 9th of December. With day-one sales topping 3.3 million copies,* World of Warcraft: Cataclysm became the fastest-selling PC game of all time, shattering the previous record, which was held by the second World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King.

And still, it doesn't offer anything new at its core. Just a re-skin of old content.

Glass half full: "Wow, that's an impressive sales number for any game!"

Glass half empty: "Ummm, that means that over half of the people that Blizzard claims are playing haven't bought the expansion yet."

    Seriously though, both apply.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

Eh, even if it just a little extra we all buy any expansion no matter what.

For one thing can't you play the endgame without it.

There is no way I wouldn't buy an expansion for a MMO I currently play and that is it.

No it doesn't. The expansion is not released in China so almost every western player bought it.

Chinese are people too you know and Blizzard count them as well, even if they pay a low hourly pay instead of monthly fees.

So Blizzards glass is pretty full.

Bobby Kotick must hate himself for not raising the price of the expansion pack.

So basically everyone that plays the game in the the countrys mentioned brought the expansion no real suprise there . WoW got it right at the right time people where getting broadband for the first time they developed a game that played on mid range pcs back then and what are low range pcs now . The only this that does suprise me is that it did nt sell more given theres 12 million playing world wide and that leveling is so fast now most of them must have at least one level 80 character . I found the Cataclysm content to be more of the same and the reshaped old world to be pretty much the same as the old one . different mobs similar quests ,few new features etc and difficulty levels about as easy as they were before . Am done with WoW now its ok if you like a game thats 95 percent easy mode .Essentially nothing much changed . Same old same old and Blizzard certainly did'nt deliver content wise Cata was the weakest expansion yet  . I can understand why it appeals to younger players these days I would have loved it when I was very young but as an adult I want something a little more challenging and interesting .Still Kudos to Blizzard they established their target audiance . So did Disney and I m sure the Disney of the video gaming industry will continue to do very well indeed .

Just because it sells 5 million doesn't mean its any good. For all we know 4 million of those people could have thought the exact same as iron and have stopped playing.

I played deepholm back when it was called Mines of Moria in LotRo. I didn't care for it then, or now.

If I remember right the Chinese just got BC(due to the wonders of their government...). So those numbers are hardly surprising.

I loved Uldum, even with all of the bugs (can they ever fix the combat bug?). But I hated Deepholm.

I'm not a wow lover by any means.  Blizzard claims 10 million play they only sold about 1/2 of what they should have sold.

Still however you got to be impressed 4.7 million copies, show me any other game that can make that claim.

Lotro, DDO,  Fallen Earth. Lol add all those up and you dont even come to 1/4th of that.

No matter how you look at it Blizzard is still the 900 pound gorilla in the room.

I bought Cata but stopped playing as soon as I got in Rift beta. I can't stand queueing for random dungeons over and over and over. Now that I've seen something new and refreshing I simply can't go back.

I know, it really upsets people because its so successful..  guarantee 99 percent of the haters are in denial,  have to admit its funny though, the lengths they go to, to try and put some negative spin on this,  have to give them 10/10 for imagination.. and 0/10 for Reality...  WoW is failing.... hehe.. Well at the end game he is absolutely correct. It is still a gear grind treadmill. Fine for those who like that but tiresome for those who want a different game experience.

It's successful.. Doesn't mean we all have to like it... The New England Patriots could win the Super Bowl.. Yet again.. And I will still hate them.. image

Why do people have to hate on a game so bad because it is succesfull?  I enjoy WoW, I've enjoyed cata so far (except Tol-Barad).  I have also enjoyed most every other mmo i have played to an extent, EQ was the first got into WoW instead of EQ2, I enjoyed SWG, LoTR, AoC, War, and many otheres, and I am looking forward to the release of Guild Wars 2, The Old Republic, The Secret World and there is probably more I'm missing from that list of played and looking forward to play.  I guess the reason I don't understand the haters is instead of looking for a forum about a game I didn't enjoy to rant like a four year old, I stoped playing and went to another game.  I really don't care if you don't like it, but instead of ranting on a forum why not just play what you do like.  Does it bother you all that much that some of us do enjoy WoW? just asking.
