Stop calling other MMOs WoW clones

There is no such thing as a game clone.  If that were true then every shooter would be a Goldeneye clone or Doom clone ,hell even Duke Nukem clone

If there was a WoW clone it would have the same storyline, same graphics, same controls, same races, pvp, same everything.  Most MMOs out there don't even have the same skill tree that WoW has. For example: In Lotro you level up and buy your skills; you don't keep putting skill points in a single skill to make it stronger. If anything WoW is a Diablo 2 clone that is persistent and in Third Person perspective.

I guess I have to ask. What is a clone?  Is it also a replica? A replica is identical to the original right?

So please, each MMO has their own unique storyline, graphics, user interface, and races.   I honestly think people think WoW is the best because it was their first MMO or something. I guess its like the first person you had sex with (it was awesome for me).

I have played WoW but it wasn't the first and that is why I can't say it is the best. It may be most popular but it is not the best.

Most of you call me a troll... I'm just speaking the truth.  So if you see a game with the title "WoW Clone" you can call it WoW Clone.

I don't think you understand why they are called clone, duke nuken is not a clone because all shooter have the same style basically (even if its not very true now). But in morpg you have 2 style themepark = WOW clone, and sandbox styles. Since pretty much no sand box but very few are out there, and so many themepark, many people talk about wow clone.

if by wow clone you mean quest driven, then wow is a eq/dnd clone.

Lots of trolls and attention starved people on internet forums, sure. But, if you'd like to understand how and why the term "WoW clone" was coined see post #2 of this thread.

If EQ had experienced WoW's success, then we'd all be calling them EQ clones, and the M59 vets would be bitching about the use of that term.

I think the only game I've tested that felt like a WOW clone was Alganon. I think WOW clone is mostly used to describe newer themepark MMOs that offer LOTS of hand holding.

  • livremlivrem Member Posts: 20

The term has it's use in describing games in a general fashion. It's also fairly provocative. Blame it on the fact that the market is over saturated with games that the label apply to.

Hate to tell you, but almost every mmorpg now a days tries to emulate wow's gameplay. Rift is a prime example, other than the rifts that can form, its bascally a copy of wow's overall gameplay and feel, many of the skill desciptions are taken right out of wow and just renamed. You'd have to have played it to see what I mean. The combat also feels the same, maybe a little less fun, overall rift's combat is very boring compared to even wow. Questing in rift is boring as well, its ripped right out of wow, but made even MORE linear if that was even possible.

Rift's only saving graces is probally the rifts, and the fact that raid gear will have a purpose at max lv (for pvp) unlike wow where raid gear serves 0 purpose but to get access to a slightly better carrot-on-a-stick raid. In a mmorpg I don't care about graphics. Gameplay is much more important, as FF14 proves, you can be the preittest flower in the garden but you can still stink and smell bad.

People call it a wow clone when the game seems like its trying to copy wow's game systems: quest, crafting, combat, etc. The "Traditional" mmorpg now a days roughly equils a game trying to copy wow. this is where the term wow-clone came from. Devs try to clone wow because its a safe bet. Seems only the indie devs now a days will risk anything diffrent.

"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

    How eloquent.

It's not complicated. The majority of mmorpg gamers came into the genre with WoW. That's why when they play a game that has the same feel and the same basic features of WoW, they tend to label it as a "WoW clone". It doesn't help that many game developers continue to try and steal a piece of WoW's pie by making "WoW like" games.

I agree that "WoW clone" is not the best way to describe many of the themepark games that have been released in the past few years, but it's not too difficult to understand why people use the term.

Frankly, considering the current state of the genre, don't we have more important things to get all worked up about? This is small beans, if you ask me.

Problem is copying WoW isn't a safe bet for getting as many players as WoW has/had. Which is more the fault of publishing companies that fund MMO's.

Methinx "WoW Clone" is the MMO equivalent of "nazi" in rhetorical debate.  Don't like a person/MMO?  Call them/it a "Nazi"/"WoW Clone".

  • ravtecravtec Member Posts: 214

lable any game as wow clone is just silly, i have playd quite a few mmo's and non of em have been a clone. They share some basic feature but thats where it also ends.

It's like other people here have said, if you call theme park mmo clones its the same as saying all fps are clones. the basic and some more are all the same in every fps game. That just shows how little you know about games.

Like watching a person explain how boreing football is to a football fan. It just makes you look silly

I've never understood why these idiots even bother calling anything a WoW clone. If it's a WoW clone, then it really is an EverQuest clone, so call it that.

  • ViewDooViewDoo Member Posts: 268

It's been proven, real life is a WoW clone. I don't have any links or "facts" to support this but that doesn't mean it isn't true!
