Need a PC game to play.. Rpg with a good story.

scythe99scythe99 Member Posts: 326

What are some good rpgs for the pc within the last 10-11 years or so that had a good story? Sandboxes like oblivion etc are out because their stories tend to blow. Doesn't have to be a pure rpg, it can be rpg-like as well.

"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

I honestly found The witcher was kinda corny, didn't like the combat at all, guy looked like a moron with the battle stances he was using.

Sounds as though you tapped the market.  You tried Jade Empire?

  • GidionGidion Member UncommonPosts: 66

I was going to say Drakensang as well.  I know the sequel just came out and you can get it (D2D maybe) for $10 or so.

I didn't play much of it . . bad timing for me but I was amazed at how it seemed like a pen and paper game (I know it is based off of one).  I felt like part of the story for sure.  I think this is because you chose a pregenerated character of sorts.  At first I didn't like that I couldn't chose how I looked but then I realized you fit into the world better.

Aside from that I would suggest any of the Gothic games.  Gothic 2 was more story driven with 3 being more open world.

These are older games for sure but cheaper to check out.

EDIT:  It is the original that is $10  The sequel is $20

Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!

You might like Planescape Torment  if you are looking for older games.

give the Gothic series a look if you havent already

Divinity 2: Dragon Knight Saga is pretty good. I'm playing through it now and so far the story seems good.

Two Worlds 2 (You can get it from Germany currently, Premium and Royle editions have multi-language)

Not sure why sandboxes like Oblivion are ruled out, they have some very good stories. Fallout New Vegas was pretty decent.

Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2, not sure if you've played them but they are very good for story. The 1st in particular.

Have you tried Iris MMO? It's very unique if you are into anime style MMOs.

    Honestly you are missing out.

The game is slow to start and annoying at beggining. But later it opens up into best RPG we have seen in the west since Planescape:Torment

But if you can not get it

Go for Fallout New Vegas , and Risen

    So many good games! :)

    Divinity 2: Dragon Knights Saga

All of Bioware games: Mass Effect, Dragon Age, KOTOR 1/2, Neverwinter Nights (Caution, only the 2nd Exp is good in terms of story)

    Planescape: Torment

Most can be had from either Steam or GoG.

I'm on my 3rd try on The Witcher. God this game better pick up soon; 3 hours in. >_>

Mass effect, Dragonage, Risen and Drakesang ( second part better than first one imo )... with that you are set for a long time.

  • ShazzelShazzel Member Posts: 472

Liked: The Witcher, Kings Bounty (both kings bounty's), Fallout Vegas, Risen

Decent: Dragon Age, Mass Effect 1-2, Oblivion thats heavily moded

    Didnt like:

Two Worlds 1-2 -  feels like cheap unfinished version of oblivion

Drakensang - combat was clunky, failed to impress

Gothic series - too bugy, even with patches

if you really want to go old school on this, check out the baldur's gate series and the icewind dale series.  there was a game released for the planescape d&d setting that was great to but I am drawing a blank on the name.  Also check out the first 2 fall out games.

Expected...only the big name titles were mentioned.  There have been a slew of great indie RPGs and others over the last decade.  To name but a few:

    Eschalon Bk.1

    Eschalon Bk.2

    Winter Voices ~ Episodic

    Avernum Series 1-6

    Geneforge Series 1-5

    Gyromancer

    Recettear

    Venetica

Age Of Decadence ~ Only a demo atm, but looks awesome!

Drakensang: The River of Time ~ the original was mentioned, and a second expansion was announced.

There are a ton more, but I can't seem to think of them atm, but this is a great start.  And an excellent place to get more info on indie & RPGs in general are here at RPGWatch.

Try Borderlands if you liked Fallout3/Vegas, basically the same thing but with online co-op and dueling.

Just bought it a couple days ago actually, $15 used, havn't been able to stop playing it either. It feels kind of small at the beginning but really opens up later on, i'm only lv25 so far (not sure what the cap is, but i've seen lv60's around) but I would already argue that it is larger than Fallout3, a lot more action orientated too, but best of all the randomized loot is on the Diablo scale of amazing.
