+Is TERA an open-world or instanced game?

TERA is an open-world sandbox game with certain instanced areas.

I figured TERA was your typical pve grind mmo where you raid dungeon one so you can raid dungeon 2 so you can raid dungeon 3 so you can.. etc then I saw this in the FAQs.  Can anyone elaborate on this?

I think what they mean is that tera is an open world where you can fully explore the world.  Yes it has dungeons, quest, and character progression.

    ~is tera a pure sandbox = no it's not~

Another sandboxy element is that Tera can has a political system where you get to vote on players to become lords in certain area's etc: http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/23/tera-fan-video-uncovers-political-system-info/

They're just trying to throw every possible label on it in the hopes of attracting more buyers.  Its a FPS game, its a sandbox game, its a RPG.  Its anything you want it to be... until you buy it... then its just the latest over hyped MMO.

I think the political system will be similar to what L2 has...anyone has any info on this one?? ...if so, the game could be labeled...sandboxy..ugh

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

That's what caught my attention about this game.

So... it will have clan halls and castle seiges?  Otherwise, what politics would there be?  Who your clan will spam votes for?

This wont work here in America, but maybe in Korea... They might be nicer to eachother and respect welll.. Respect.

USa would just give the "Lord" the finger and continue grinding rep/raids/gear/[insert MMO Objectives Here]. Oh well, who knows but the people who sneaked into the Korean beta and actually can read Korean, maybe one of those brave souls could comment?

I guess I would call it a themepark with some sandbox-y features (open world, political system, etc.)

However, there still is little info about crafting, what the political system entails and the end game. As such, you would have to be a Korean tester to know how much of a sandbox it is/isn't.

But if you actually read the reports of some testers, they have been very positive so far, which gives me hope. Animations and combat seem to be very smooth, which is very important in a MMO. Now, if we just had some info about crafting, all would be perfect.

If TERA is a sandbox, then I am definately more excited about it.  I would really like to try out a sandbox style game that uses player skill over gear, and has great graphics.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

It's not like people will dub your game a sandbox for long if they find out there's just one small red plastic shovel and a sandy turd but no bucket and waterhose. If they'd go out on a limb to brand it a sandbox or fps while those aspects are only marginally implemented, it wil surely backfire on them. For now I'm willing to assume that they just wanted to make a better game and thus a better selling game by combining some cool features that people enjoy and which you don't see in your average mmorpg.

Nothing screams "SANDBOXY" to me more than choosing your class then getting ready to rip some linear quests!

First of all, this game isn't what I would consider a "Sandbox" style-game. I've been playing since OBT started earlier this week, I don't speak Korean but it didn't hinder my progress through the Starting Zone. The games pretty linear at this point (Take note that this is the Korean version of the game and the Western version is supposedly being altered a bit so quests seem more meaningful, less of a grind, more instances, etc). I've played various MMOs over the years and I can tell you that TERA has the BEST combat out of any MMO i've played, better than some single player Action Games out there. Successfully defeating your enemy requires strategy and It's really fun as hell, honestly I think most ppl will play the game for that single reason. But back on topic, the game has a fully open world and no loading screens when travelling between zones. Most quests play out like your typical Kill X amount of this monster, collections, and some contain story development on that particular zone, with cutscenes every now and then. The last quest of the starting zone required me to join an instance and defeat a Boss, which was pretty frickin epic. I played around a little with crafting, but again I don't speak Korean so I couldn't understand much of what exactly I was doing. There is supposed to be a Political System but i'm not sure on the details at this point so you'll have to wait a little longer for En Masse to clarify. I wouldn't call this game a "Sandbox" though, I think the FAQ was just stating that there are some Sandbox influenced features in the game, possibly some that I have yet to discover having only played the game for less than a week. Well shit, im off to play, if you guys have any questions PM me and i'll try to answer them as best I can.

Thanks for the clarifimacation CultofDagon. Good to hear the world is seamless too. Really curious about a more in depth look at aspects other than combat and questing though. Try to catch a korean-english speaker and drag him over will you? :D

It feels like an open world to me... I only explored the newbie island,  the city, and lumber Jack forest. The world feels seamless.

Sandbox games dont have levels, this does, so therfore not a sandbox.

Minecraft is more of a sandbox than Tera is xD

there is no accute definition for what a sandbox is.

  • sadeyxsadeyx Member UncommonPosts: 1,555

Level restricted content is definatly not sandbox.  They use the term 'sandbox' for a good reason.

  • Joseph_KerrJoseph_Kerr Member RarePosts: 1,113

I remember reading something about this, they said the first 1/2 or 2/3 of the game will be traditional themepark style mmorpg but the latter would consist of sandbox elements. Im not sure exactly what they mean by that but yes, I remember something along those lines being said by developers. Could be interesting.

  • CultOfDagonCultOfDagon Member UncommonPosts: 3

Yea like I said in my previous post, from what I've played so far the game isn't what I would call a sandbox, it does have some sandbox elements though (seamless travel between zones, crafting, the supposed political system). The game was pretty linear until I hit the first major city and from there i kinda felt thrust into the game's world. I don't speak Korean so i was pretty much lost after the Introductory Crafting quests and i've been traveling to the surrounding zones trying to find quests appropriate to my current level. I'm really liking the combat and art design the games beautiful, i'll have to wait for the english version to fully appreciate the game tho, unless i find someone that speaks both Korean and English to help me out   image.
