Funny thing was those were special batttles for the beta events.  I wonder how many we will see in live.

World bosses aren't new tbh. As a matter of fact, if anything, MMO's have drifted away from it for a reason.

However I do have one question: I hear a lot about "Omg rift bosses, and invasion this and rift raid that", but, how scripted are these bosses? Are they just huge health pools with a special attack or two that drops the tank's HP a little more than usual?

I've watched a few videos and it pretty much looks like a zerg tank and spank. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Oh and I know about that 1 rift where it's a little puzzle, but I'm talking about outside that 1 event.

Scripted in game, part of the lore.  Said many times.  If you look to the right, it's a public event for everyone in the zone.  Basically the entire zone becomes one PQ for this event.

So it's not really a funny thing, it's an awesome thing.

In some ways I think it is.

I recently received a poll from rift asking me all sorts of questions. One of my concerns was that their rifts essentially can be looked at as "zerg tank and spank" affairs. I pretty much used your exact phrase.

Now, that in and of itself is no biggie to me but my sense is that unless the rift has a lot more members, everyone charges in and defeats the rift without a whole lot of casualites. This doesn't mean I didn't die quite a bit but sometimes the feeling of a coordinated effort on the side of the rift was lacking.

In my time playing mmo's I've seen some pretty bad ass world bosses. A couple of those were actually in WoW... Yeah that's right kiddies, Wow used to have some bad ass world bosses to take down before it was turned into QueueCraft. In rift we have special rifts that can be opened with items I don't see why those couldn't be as challenging as other world encounters seen in other games.

Outside that one rift boss, there is the guy with book and the room and furniture that comes out of the ground.  Basically think a cross section building pops up from the field.  He reads the books to buff himself that he grabs from the bookshelves that appeared.  Requires people to click on books to debuff him.  Of course a response before was like 'so it's zerg zerg click click?'  But w/e you asked about how scripted, that's an example.  Many bosses use knock back and kick you a few hundred feet away.  Many use CC and turn you into something...fire elemental, animals, etc.  One boss has some box thing around him and you have to kill all the other spawns before him.  There's some mechanic that's unclear about the Werewolf in Gloamwood.  Can't talk much about that one, since I haven't seen it first hand.  There's the statues that shoot lasers out of their eyes, so you have to watch where you move.  I mean none of this is OMG I'm getting a personal story, kind of script - but they do get more complicated as you level and enter new zones.

After playing Aion, the mention of "World Bosses" makes me want to vomit. I don't think they'll be anything like that in Rift, I just wanted to share a little hate for Aion.

Having events in the game like this could really be a make it or break it sort of dynamic. Because I don't get to play as often as the hardcore players, I would be pretty disappointed if I found that my playtime always seem to miss the epic world boss. On the other side of the coin if these events happened too frequently, then it sure takes away from it feeling epic.

I really do like the idea of tons of players fighting together to acheive something though, and hopefully Rift does a great job with the mechanic.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I forgot about the guy who turns you into little fire spirits and you just flee. That was a neat effect.

I'm glad developers are trying to get players to band together and actually care about one another again. It's been a long lonely road. I first heard about such events while following GW2. I knew that rifts were similar. It will be interesting to see how these two development teams go about their dynamic events when we can actually compare them.

    These Battles are crazy fun.

    Rift Epic Boss Battle

fixed your post to utilize a link.

Watched video,i wonder about the lack of EPIC feel?I ask becuase that player was hit by an apparent EPIC boss and then knock back and then hit repeatedly by one of the minions and still seeemed to be nowhere near dead.

How is damage done?Is there really any risk of dying?are you hitting the boss for 1/1//1? does level matter in these RIFT battles? Is there any strategy or just tons of players whacking away?

You see i really was intrigued by Beseiged in fFXI,the EPIC boss and their minions attack the city, but after doing them a few times,it became ho hum and i really didn't care much anymore.I guess if the drops were decent it would be incentive enough to look forward to them.

Watching that 'epic' fight man that looked boring. He even had to speed it up lol cause it took what 30+ minutes?

I sincerely hope this isn't one of the 'epic' battles.

Cinderon is a level 10ish boss that spawns from a major rift.  He AoE fears (the fire elemental polymorph) and does a fire AoE that does about 50% of your health and hits hard, but they fought him with tons of people.  We did him with less than 10, and the fight was much more difficult, but that boss is nothing compared to the Titan or Banshee bosses we fought.

As I said the Banshee had 2 AoEs both, one pool and one melee range AoE that you have a few seconds to get out of.  The combination of both and the unpredictable fear mechanic had you constantly moving around the entire fight.  We died several times with only 5 people and had were essentially "zombie" fighting the boss (ressurrecting repeatly and fighting to keep it tapped so it doesn't reset).  The Titan boss also has a melee range AoE which is much harder to avoid since he moves with it, though you can see him cast it and kite him while it's active, of course since most of the time he was up there was a huge Defiant zerg on him, he went down fast, but you can just imagine how difficult he would be if you only used a single raid on him.  There were corpses everywhere on both bosses when they were zerged.

Don't make snap judgements about the boss encounters based on a single video that was obviously done with a huge zerg that probably won't be there after some time in release.

It wasn't for me.  I had a good time.

    /sarcasm

This first zone isn't complicated enough; therefore, the entire game and all the bosses will be exactly like this.

    /off sarcasm

    You're funny.

shhhhhh...the Trolls don't want you to bring reason into the discussion.  They want snap judgements.  It's all they got.  I'm sure their next post will be like 'oh yeah? it's got all that?  well does it clean my house for me?'

'yeah...didn't think so.  fail game.  if the game wanted to be truly dynamic, it would clean my house.  wait til GW2 comes out, it will clean my house.'

It s too bad, because I really wanted to like this game. That said aside from other really annoying things in this game, those "Epic" fights become very stale and boring after 1 or 2 times.
