Hey all,
Been playing MMOs for a number of years and one of my favorite parts of an mmo is the character customization. I like to have a lot of choice during character creation ( both races and appearance) , then a lot of choices as far as skills and paths once in the world. There a number of MMOs I have played that were fun, but everyone looked like everyone else and had the exact same skill set after a few levels.
So, please throw out current and soon to be released MMOs that might give me that feeling of being unique and following my own path even if it is a 10 year old mmo or one that will be out in a few months. Thanks.

Well, Aion has great physical customization.
Rift has (arguably) great class customization as you can combine three classes within a discipline.
From what I understand Asheron's call had great character customization (I dont' think it has classes per se) but it's an old game so I dont' imagine it will have a large variety of physical customization. At least I don't remember being bowled over for the few hours I tried the game (regarding physical customization).

The best currently is Champions Online. I think they recently said in a video theres over 3,400 costume pieces?
You also get to fully customize your skills.
Its opening a Free to Play version on January 25th.
Some examples of characters I've made:
A punk teenager with wings that beats things up.
A cyborg half deer man that shoots plasma (based on a Hell Knight from Doom).
A sexy demon chick with fire and darkness powers.
An insectoid robot with robotics and artillery.
A shaman woman that can summon wolves and fights with a sword.
The two with the most customization are super hero MMOs, City of Heroes and Champions Online. You can make up races. You can make anything from robots, werewolves, elves, whatever. In Co you can even practically be a quadruped.
CoH has classes but they are more diverse than most MMOs. With some exceptions of a couple popular builds, it is quite rare to meet someone with the same powers. Hard to meet anyone that looks the same.
CO you don't even have classes, you can pick different powers as you like, though there are definitely advantages to having some in a theme.
Star Trek Online had a lot of character customization. I didn't play long enough to tell you about powers.
I think Dark Age of Camelot has a lot of classes and races, but I don't know a lot about it. I played it years ago but not for long.
Fallen Earth has really good character customization but you are limited to humans. It is classless, but you are basically going to be either melee, pistols, or rifle. You can have a wide variety of mutations and skills which you have more freedom with - like healing lines with mutations or bandages etc, poison, acids, grenades, pyro, disease, animal DNA buffs, cooking and brewing, and so on.
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
APB had by far one of the best customization!
