RO is a MMO with nintendo's graphics

Sorry to say this, i really think that RO should really be removed as the graphics is hurting my eyes. Seeing my friends play it and everyone.. well almost everyone is using bots to lvl up and finding items.. what's the point of this game? get a life.. do something else.. or play something else..

Sorry to be a little prejudice against RO, but with all the botting going on... what's the point? I know that it's an old game with many many players playing it.. but what is the fun of it? Could someone please explain it to me? Or maybe not....it 's acceptable for kids like 12-15 to play this... is there anyone whom is 18+ still playing ragnarok?

I can help you out a bit.  RO does several things not done in other mmorpgs.  For starters it is in an alternate environment based off of a manga series.  This was diverse from the typical medieval setting, or space explorations and set in on fans from anime.  It also made a model many anime style mmorpgs used in development.

That one isnt exactly strong enough to explain the appeal of RO.  The second best reason are the fanboys who cannot leave behind the characters they grinding so much on.

Probably the actual reasons players have stuck with RO is because of these reasons.  The user interface is simply the best in the industry allowing for easy point and click explorations, quick and easy communication, and it is uncluttered allowing a great view of the area.  Also the use of 2d graphics on a 3d environment allows for the game to have lower system reqs, and the typical person doesnt have 524 mb ramm system.  So with the computers with the actual ram of the typical computer the choice becomes limited to only a few games where The Sims Online and Ragnarok Online excell in.  Also the final reason is the publisher.  After a rocky start they became dedicated in offering very fast and expansive updates, roughly once every month.  The typical user attention span to these updates lasted one month which helped maintain the user base.  Also after realising the mistakes they with the updates they are now altering what they are doing and offering things that previously werent in mmorpgs, such as mini-games.  They are also making a sequal to the game in very rich graphics RO2.  It should prove to be worth playing since Gravity has become a leader in the mmorpg genre in Korea, and there are alot of really good 3d modelers in korea which will result in lower system specs required to play compared to an american made game.  While also doubling every single aspect of play in RO in the period of 3-6 months.

I hope I was clear enough to fully explain it.  There are also a few more factors that the RO player may have found appealing that I can list if you would like.

Edit-Ohh ya bots.  Roughly 90% of the population that has played over 1 month bots.  This is due to the fact that level grinding is boring, and there is a quick and easily solution on the web that is easy to get "bots." To tell you the truth bots are the result of bad design in 95% of mmorpgs, the level grind and no good answer to it.  Its actually very simple to stop botting in RO without resorting to perm banning all of them.  Allowing a method for a player to level when they are not on in the form of a training hall.  Granted this method can be very slow, even 1/100th the time it takes to level offline; it would still stop botting for 1 reason.  Only a few people actually program bots, and the effort made to mantain a bot is significant.  In actuality, the bot developers usually dont even have an hour to spare all week.  If they were to learn that what they were doing is already in game, they would probably just go screw it.

Also private servers can be dealt with in a similiar fashion, and is actually what prompted RO2.  When the server code was leaked a couple years ago, it was spread so fast and so far that Gravity couldnt stop everything.  So they really just gave up.  By altering the code like they are in RO2 they actually made something Private server operators would actually have to work hard to simulate.  Thus eliminating them.

Hmm... thanks for the deep insight reply. Something for me to ponder upon. I was just disgusted with the amount of botting n graphics. I know that I'll never be involved in this game but nonetheless, it's good for me to understand why people should p2p in this game since it's so old it's really not that appealling to the newer gamers. It's also a great discounragement and hindrance for those that are not botting... it's like, it's either you bot or you don't bother playing. My friends they bot 24/7 and then when they get good items and high level, they start to create chaos, man this kinda gameplay really gives me the idea of .... what's the point of playing? :) anyway..... no point complaining...cheers

Well, like i said before, i know that this a VERY OLD game... and it deserves some due respect in terms of it's life span and target audience, however this is really ... erm... out dated graphics... sorry, i'm really into some solid 3d graphics. Come on... technology advances so does the game. Even half-life also have half-life 2 after like 8 years... even lineage also have lineage2 after like 5-6 years.. why aren't RO2 being released yet? or maybe in the making.. pardon me...Happy New Year to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CHEERS

RO2 is in the making with some really cool graphics.  Look at ROworld I think to find the link to the preview.  They are also previewing it at E3 this year.

  • CleffyCleffy Member RarePosts: 6,414

I think the url is http://www.roempire.com  the preview should be there I think.  You should be able to find a topic on thier forums.  It has promise for these reasons:

The original RO was made by a small company with limited technology, and the game engine hasnt been updated since its creation.  RO2 is being developed by the same company but with more financial backing.

The game is being made in Korea which showcases some of the best 3d modelers in the world.  So the graphics should be descent without eating up your computer.

The original Lead dev who was fired when Samsung bought out Gravity has returned, and with alot of user suggestions it should prove to be promising.

But on this game I could be wrong and it might be an EQ2 clone.

Well, if it was a EQ2 clone then all the RO ppl would be ULTRA BITTERLY DISAPPOINTED. MY condolences image Oh well, life goes on.

If graphics and playing fair is your definition of a good mmorpg, there isn't one. All games eventually leads to hacks and bots. Gravity is doing whatever they can to minimize the bots. The graphics may be bad, but the gameplay is awesome. That evens it out. However, this is my opinion, I will respect your opinion as well. As not everyone thinks the same way as you/me do. Please don't tell people to "get a life, do something else, or play something else" when you think RO is the worst game ever. Heck, I can say WoW is the worst mmorpg ever and many people will disagree with me.

RO nevertheless, needs to be replaced. Let's hope that RO2 will deliver a much better game than this one. For example, Diablo stunned the world for rpg.. but Diablo 2 replaces it with a BIGGER stun. Needless to say, RO needs to be replaced by RO2

  • CleffyCleffy Member RarePosts: 6,414
I 100% agree with that.  I have seen some of the upcoming updates that will most likely be great for the genre, but in the end they were implemented badly and doesnt give you the right feelings.  Such as mini-games.  They are being implemented, just they arent fun enough.  Going full 3d should prove to add some promise, but they could mess up on this too.  Hopefully, they are going to learn something from R.O.S.E.  From a realistic standpoint, Gravity is the SOE of korea, except Gravity has had more customers.

I had a long reply for this, but I decided it didn't matter.  If you don't like the game, don't play it.  But don't begrudge others the right to enjoy a game for what it is, rather than what it is not.  If I wanted to play Everquest or World of Warcraft or any of those other games, I would.  I don't.  Why?  Well, to be fair, I rather like having an avatar that DOESN'T have boobs bigger than her skull.  The game has a solid community of people that enjoy the game and help others get the most out of their experience.  Yeah, so it doesn't have OMG UBER 3D GRAFIX!!!.  Neither does La Pucelle Tactics or Guilty Gear XX, both of which are huge sellers world wide.  A game doesn't have to look like reality to sell well.  Frankly, I thought the point of playing an MMORPG was to escape reality for a while and immerse yourself in another world.  I could be wrong.  Just my 2 cents.

To be honest, I'm not saying RO is a sucky game, it's just outdated. Read what I have posted earlier on. Games is just like movies. They should have a prequel or sequel if they are really popular after so many years.

well ragnarok is like those type of games that needs to grow on you haha and if your not into anime things like this... this isn't your kinda game then haha.
  • CleffyCleffy Member RarePosts: 6,414
That is so true.  I actually prefer these graphics over super-realistic graphics, mainly because it is alot easier to get a grasp of your surrounding, and they arent taxing on the system.  Also the communication system is top-notch.  There is a reason it has millions of customers(not in the US).

Well, I personally like anime, and to be honest, this game has nothing to do with anime. Look at other anime and how the developers try to make games that reflect the anime, and so far to date there are none that can go hand in hand. So don't try to bullshit me saying that through anime I'll enjoy the gameplay more. The fact is, it's just sucky and it needs to be replaced by RO2. Stop all those nonsense by saying the community is good or my old junk pc can still run it well, haven't you heard of the saying "It's time to go means it's time to go" No point hogging on to some old junk that is long time overdue

I don't really mind the graphics, Sprites are fun!
The game is a real grindmania tho :p
It's not even that good, it's only extremely addictive, like bad quality drugs.

Well, to be honestly speaking, let's not just focus on the bad graphics and low engine requirements. The game is just spoilt with people botting 24/7 and then getting all the GODLY gear and at high level start to pk or do stupid stuff. What's the point of this? The whole reason of mmorpg is to enjoy every single bit of the game. Not just baam.. i'm Godly and i feel good just because using a bot program to do all your hard work. This is kids' play

(The game doesn't have a PK System.)
The stat system is a lot better than on most games because you have more freedom over your character(You can make a bunch of different builds, Battlepriest, Meatshields etc. hybrids.)
Sure, there are botters since grinding is always boring unless you like clicking monsters a lot ;/
