Rift or TERA

D3lit3D3lit3 Member Posts: 95

I'm pretty much planning on getting only one MMO this year due to time constraints and both games look surprisingly good. However, Rift looks more polished and TERA looks more innovative.

I know this is a long shot posting it here but hey lots of people from different games browse this forum so who knows I might get a legitimate opinion.

  • I'll help you by saying this:

    Rift will be released soon.

Tera just entered OB in Korea.

    Go figure :)

This is what you'll get.  Some people will respond sincerely.

    Some will say Rift.

    Others will say Tera.

Then more will say SWTOR and GW2.

Then the conversation will spiral out of control about something else.  The words WoW clone and Korean grinder will get thrown out there and all hell will break loose and the Mods will lock this thread.

     Hahahahaha,

Oh and I like TERA graphics better than Rift except the rediculously stupid oversized weapons (80 pound 20 foot long lance held in the hand of a girl that weighs in at just over 90 pounds herself). But I like the 'any amount of players in one spot and not crash or lag out' of Rift, oh yeah and the soul system, like that too.

Well its a hard question to answer at this point..

Tons of people on these forums have tried Rift.

hardly anyone has tried TERA as there is no beta for it outside Korea.

kinda hard to reach a verdict.Even then,it'll all come down to ones own interests.

TERA looks to be more action based,Rift is a more traditional MMO with a couple twists here and there.

It's debateable how many ACTUALLY tried Rift, but yes many more than TERA that's for sure.

More excited about TERA as it might push the genre forward combat and graphics wise, but with no release date, I'm with Rift for now.

  • santimiarsantimiar Member Posts: 129

Is it a time constraint or a money constraint?

if time, you can get rift now and tera later and then decide and unsub the one you don't like. If its money, I say Tera, but you're in for a long wait still.

  • xKingdomxxKingdomx Member UncommonPosts: 1,541

This is sorta like a Evolution vs. Revolution.

TERA is trying to extend the action control to the fantasy genre, to the MMO category for a certain extend.

TERA promotes the game based on its innovation and new action controls, whereas Rift sells the game on mainly polish levels and what system worked great for many MMO in the past and made it better, a forumla which WoW enjoyed great success.

There is no lies that both games could potentially be great, or a grind.

How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.

Rift will likely be out 6 months before Tera so you might as well pick up Rift if $$ aren't a big issue.

Tera may actually wind up being just as polished considering millions of Koreans are going going to be playing it long before it hits the U.S.  Tera will also have much better graphics than any of the other games coming out this year and has a different combat style than most mmos.  The down side is there has been some pretty poor content and westernization on games similar to Tera, so Rift is a safer bet for quality content.

Also, how do you feel about WoW?  A lot of people find Rift very similar, is that a plus or minus for you?

Personally after 6 years of WoW I've had my fill cartoonish western graphics and I'm rooting for Tera... but I'm also aware it could crash and burn like Aion.

Both games are looking great. Tera is still an unknown, since hardly anyone has a solid preview. With that, I would say get Rift, and play it to death, and hopefully by then, Tera will be out. Even if you don't like Rift, you still have a long while before Tera is out.

I've actually never played WoW. Not even a trial. I'm currently playing Darkfall but it became too much of a grind so I kind of quit for now. I can't really say much about either games after watching youtube vids although  the TERA targeting and political system sound very interesting. But surely Rift has a political system as well?

Yes you earn rep in the game that unlocks items and such from NPCs.

Rift is nothing like Darkfall though.  I mean nothing.  So if you're looking for that kind of game, Rift is probably not for you.

TERA I have no idea for sure comparing it to Darkfall.  I'll let someone else answer that.

  • NBlitzNBlitz Member Posts: 1,904

No-one can tell you if you'll like a game.

Rift is out at the beginning of March. Get that first.

One or two months before TERA's launch in EU/USA  save up for when it releases (edit: and quit Rift).

I highly recommend it, if you haven't been put off by the graphics you've seen in screenshots.

There you have it. You wouldn't have spent too much money and most importantly you will be able to make a choice based on your own experiences.

  • clankyaspclankyasp Member Posts: 213

i would rather Play WoW then Rift but once Tera comes i will play that as it wll be new experience.

No actually I don't think Rift will have anything like Tera's political system, someone a few posts up said they would but he basically described a rep grind.  If someone has better information feel free to correct me though.

Not having played WoW before might actually make Rift seem a lot more fresh and exciting compared to people who have been playing WoW for years.

I say if you want a good traditional mmo not much unlike its predecessors but with better graphics then I would recommended Rift. I played all the betas it's a really good game but I have lost the taste for traditional sadly.

I am personally excited for Tera being a really nice looking game and action style. I have waited for a game like Tera for a while now so my opinion is a little bias. I will say both games look great and will (most likely) play great.

The decision is really yours. Watch some in game videos and go with your play style more.

Also like someone mentioned Rift is out in 2 months while Tera is still 2011? TBA

  • ZefireZefire Member Posts: 676

    I say nither of them.

Just wait for swtor or Gw2.

I m currently playing dc universe online till swtor comes out.

I tried rift and it's not a big deal.

If u are curious about find a way to test the game first before buy it.

I was both in dc and rift betas and i decided to go for dc and yes im very pleased from dc that im thinking about a lifetime subscription so as i can play along with starwars.

If you like Traditional western MMO's Rift is a good choice, but if you like Asian style MMO's then Tera would be the right pick. Or you could play both...

I will be playing Rift because Scott Hartsman from EQ is the lead designer and get's IT... But when Tera launches here in the US i might check it out Tera looks beautiful and the combat is interesting. But i tend to play western games over asian games..

What another poster said, why compare a game that is coming out with one that is ages away?

  • XthosXthos Member UncommonPosts: 2,740

This is my opinion, and I know people love some of the stuff I dislike, and Rift does have a little of the elements I will list, like the large weapons in some cases.

Tera looks like a flashy  arcade game, huge weapons, big booms/pows/flashes, huge flashy damage numbers....I dislike this, I find it distracting.  Some will say thats what they like, its more a mmofps, with manual targeting and gives them more action.

I think the graphics have looked nice and such, I wouldn't be opposed to playing a beta of it to see for myself, but from watching videos, its not my thing combat wise...which like I said is 180 from a lot of its fans.

I wouldnt have said the same thing3 months ago, but Tera.

Don't put your money into a product just because it's out soon, wait for the one of the two that looks, y'know, fun is my my advice.

There is no reason to think Tera won't be polished... I mean, all Rifts means when it says that is 'it works' anyhow, it dosent mean polished the way most other games do (having world fluff, emotes, itemisation etc, as well as it just working). Tera will very likely work just fine.

I won't be playing either, but Tera looks the most exciting (having now tried Rift).

Well, there are plenty of mmo's out there which have improvments or expansions released.  I for one could re-sub to a multitude of MMO's and just WAIT for the ones I want to play.  -  considering that every new mmo released in the past few years is utter shite, I dont think its that hard to stop yourself from "omg buy mmo" when one is released.

on topic,  Rift apparently is just a copy / paste of traditional mmo, Tera is quite different,  so yea,  really hard to compare the two.

In the mean time, probably re-sub to lotro, Eve, try one of the other mmo's that gone f2p.  or take a break and go back to grass roots traditional RPG.

  • XasapisXasapis Member RarePosts: 6,337

I think you're missing the point, regardless if you mean well. When somebody asks whether he should taste apples or oranges, you don't generally suggest bananas, unless you think that both apples and oranges taste bad.

I would suggest the OP does what other people here did and gave suggestions, aka try for yourself. Noone will tell you if you're going to like something besides yourself. Unlike Vesavius, I found Rift fun to play. I can't pinpoint the reason and I can't tell how long the fun will last. But at least I tried the game for myself and I enjoyed myself, without waiting for second hand opinions to dictate what I might or should like.

Tera is also looking interesting. However, along with other MMOs, we won't be able to participate in their betas or launch for quite some time.

    It's your choice really OP.

on topic, Tera apparently is just an asian grinder, Rift beta 4 was apparently sensational when the devs ramped up the event system, so yea, really hard to compare the two.

Not played either myself :) just saying be careful what you believe. I think the forums here are a lot more informative than just about anything else you'll read but they are still chaotic and difficult to negotiate.

OP, sincerely best of luck deciding. I think it is very difficult sometimes. If you can play in the (last?) Rift beta then that might help?
