nomssnomss Member UncommonPosts: 1,468

Recently I have noticed that Rift's Hype Meter is consistently increasing. Is everything okay with the meter?

All AAA company games hype meters rise here at mmorpg. Take for what you will.

When it is released it will rank between 7.2 and 8.9 no matter what it is like.

The game is less than six weeks from release and has generally been well received by people that have seen it. What's surprising about the hype meter rising?

I guess people are just anticipating the release. image

Don't worry, it should drop below 8.0 pretty quickly after release. :)

  • Which beats the 3 that star wars is going to drop to after it releases.

You guys sure do pay attention to hype. I don't even know how hype works. All I know is that the higher the hype, the better the game. Anyone care to explain to me how it works?

Meter relates to CB so it's normal.  You will see the same with other games that get close to release.

Actually, many other good mmorpgs, had a high hype and would drop quickly as soon as the nda was lifted. This happeened to many games like vangaurd and most recently final fantasy 14.

Rift on the other hand was at a steady 8.30+ then it dropped to 7.98 when the first impressions of the playable  alpha came out. Now the games nda was lifted and there is alot of positive praise. It does seem this game in particular is not following the trend many other games before it had. Rifts hype slowly have started to raise as people now are beta testing the game.

This is a good thing. to see one game that seems to be living up to its hype.

i believe gw2's meter is broken as well.

  • tswthoradintswthoradin Member Posts: 83

Yea, I can't see the meter dropping to much. The game is extremely polished right now. It's isn't completely ground breaking, some things are pretty innovative like the class system, but it's still pretty nice. I do think this will get a lot of the mmo population that is sick of wow yet doesnt want to play sucky mmo's like FF14.

Based on prior games gameplay vs hype levels, I'd have to say that Rift is the first game in a long time that is underhyped and is delivering the goods. Which is quite the opposite of what we've seen in the recent past with games hyping themselves into oblivion and then coming out below average.

I certainely don't think Rift is breaking any barriers or that it's going to blow anyone's mind, but it's solid, polished, and actually has content (even if that content is the same as other mmo's currently out).

The meter is just fine :P admittedly, as i'm pretty jaded with standard mmo 'text block >>> go kill x rats/collect x >>>> reward' gameplay, so rift wasn't my cup of tea. But aside from that it's a well polished and overall quite a fun game for those interested in that style of gameplay :)

I rated it an 8 here as such, as i feel it's a very solid game and deserves to do at least mildly well, if not really innovating much. The only game to ever get a '10' hype rating from me is gw2 however, as that is a game that really looks to be changing that aforementioned gameplay i tire of, along with being an amazing game :)

Pity not everyone thinks like me (and no, that doesn't mean give gw2 a 10) and just goes '0 lolololol, wow clone is suX0r!!1!!' for any game that isn't their current favourite MMO ><

I would love to give GW2 a 10 on the hype meter but i can't.. We know very little about GW2 and no one has played the game except a few minutes at PAX with a scripted event.

Many people have played Rift to lvl27 and have had 4 beta events to give there feed back on. I can confidently give a 10 to Rift on the hypoe meter cause i played it and loved it..

I have never seen a  games hype meter rise here once people here started playing a games beta.  Quite amazing if it just stayed the same.  But rising that said quite a bit.

indeed, and that is always a great way to do things :) my hype meters are basically just what i feel about the game based on what i do know, since i'm a bit (read; a lot) of a guild wars geek, i've been lapping up information, and from what i know there's a lot for me to like. However i do wish many of the fanboys would stop going around saying 'zomg teh bestest!' when we haven't been able to properly play the game yet :/ I think the game looks awesome, but i'm not going to go around putting down other MMO's! However, yes, from what i know about the game, the mechanics and from gw1 experience, the hype meter sits at 10 for me. It could drop if some features are there that i don't like though :)

And indeed, if i loved the gameplay i'd give rift a 10, it is a well made game by all means. But the gameplay is not innovative enough for me, so it just didn't grab me personally. I can see rift doing well though once it gains some momentum and more content over time :)

Finally, one more thing about gw2, another reason (amongst many for me personally) it rates 10 is that it's buy to play :D meaning that no-one has to abandon their current favorite mmo!

Why is it so hard for some of these <Insert Explitive Laced Description Here> to accept people are going to have different tastes and like different games?   If you don't like it, don't play it.  Seriously... some people just need to get over themselves.

The hype meter is possibly the worst metric you could use to garner... well any sort of information.

The meter is fine, beta came out and now all the people that played in the beta that may have been undecided about this game are now excited and the hype is justly going up where it should be.

I changed my hype after beta. I didn't think I would enjoy that game, but it is definately something I am looking forward to now.

Usually when beta comes around the hype usually drops for games. Remember FF14??? Yea, what I thought.. this case the game is actually good so it is the total opposite. Hype is skyrocketting.

I agree.  I am really enjoying this and even though it is in beta, it feels like a release-quality game.  Great thing is, we have only even seen the first half of the game!  Trion has also completely impressed me with their level of communication and response to player issues.  Truly top-notch!

There seems like quite a bit of anticipation for Rift at the moment.  Thats a good thing.  Everyone needs to be cautious though.  I recall this anticipation with several games before it, over the last 5-years.  Some of that anticipation was aligned with "Hope" and some was aligned with "This is will be a transient ride".

However, I have a much stronger feeling about Rift as a complete and evolved product due to my learned businsess seriousness of Trion Worlds.

So I agree that we give Trion a shot; those that are anticipating it, give Trion and Rift a shot at entertaining me (us).  I am hoping that they do more than most other mmorpg's over the last 5 years, and continue to earn continued subscribership.

Their competition, thought, in the themepark sector this year, will be GW2, then SWTOR.   I plan on trying both those as well, but in the meantime, there does exist some nice amalgamative breadth and depth of game-play with Rift to earn a pre-order for the early-time-being.   Many agree, but only time will tell.

I posted something like this in the other thread that got deleted.  I can't stand when that happens, so I'm reposting it here.

I'm not going to tell people that they didn't have fun playing the beta.  That would be silly.  But I do have reservations about the longevity of the game.

Think of how the hype dropped during Beta 1 and 2.  The game has one starting zone for each faction, one progression path per faction up through the beta content.  The quests are extremely linear and uninspired.  Kill 20 guys, loot 10 things.  Over and over and over.  Rifts were 3-5 waves of static mobs waiting to be zerged.  Invasions were bland.  Major cities are small and poorly designed.

I really do believe that they spent from whenever they started until November 2011 making a safe, bland MMO.  The hype was dropping and Trion knew that for all their polish, their game wasn't going to sell as well as they would like.  So what did they do?  They turned on the rift faucet.  And it worked.  People are eating it up.  Not only that, but it's like they've been working overtime feverishly adding all sorts of flavor to the rifts and invasions.  Raid mobs, elites.  You can't find ANY interesting rift footage online from before December at all.  It's all new.

On one hand, that's a great thing that the company is listening to its player base.  But I do think that they laid down a poor foundation that I don't think can be fixed before release.  That's what I think it's going to hurt it in the long run.  If you've played through the faction once, you've pretty much played that half of the game.  If you get sick of rifts and invasions and don't want to deal with them, then what you're going to be left with is what people didn't like about betas 1 and 2.

Maybe it's just that I'm overly critical, or maybe because money is tight right now, but I can't see subscribing for Rift.  I feel like it's going to be a good game because they're taking the shackles off in the 11th hour.  I think maybe it could have been a great game had they set out to design a great game and not just a polished one.

But who cares what I think, that's just my opinion.  If you subscribe for Rift, no matter how long you play it, whether it be one month, six months, or years, the only thing that matters for you is whether you think it was worth it.

"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true – you know it, and they know it." -Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007

Everything on this site should be taken with a grain of salt, including hype.  DCUO has released and has higher hype than Rift.

A good analogy for rift is that it is a saltine with frosting on it. Sure the frosting is good, but if you lick it off, you get a bland cracker . It's missing the cake.

I've seen the hype for too many MMOs and their "unique" features that just didn't pan out to be all that great.

Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

With the beta events the game has generated quite a bit of media buzz. (smart media group at Trion)  It's a fun game, and the rifts are interesting. Will have to wait and see what the PvP turns out like and the end game. So far just battleground like pvp has been in the beta.
