Hey all
I have been casually seeking a NON class based fantasy mmo for a long time.
I love the sandbox feel of games like EvE and Perpetuum but was brought up on a steady diet of D&D, Runquest and Lord of the Rings! But the slow steps you take in progressing from level to level (typically after 30th) kills all Fantasy games for me.
I crave a fantasy mmorpg with a skill progression like EvE, a crafting system like EvE, an epic game world like LOTRO and a PVE aspect similar to DDO.
Am I deluding myself or is there such a game out there?

Darkfall
You get one character per account. You can skill it to be everything. Role is more dependant on what your wearing.
Everything you do helps build your character....if you like chopping wood and crafting it will also make you a stronger fighter, even running/jumping has an effect on your characters overall abilities.
People think Darkfall is one big PVP orgy, but its really one bigass PVE game with ganking near the nooby starter areas, because everyone loves the taste of noob tears.
Just make sure you choose your character race very carfully, do some research on it. I cannot stress this enough. Some races are PVP nuts and have no other race allies, others have 3 allies and some "kind of dead" areas good for PVE without constant ganking. Make sure you know the racial benefits.
Typically, combat will go something like this (big learning curve with the UI and binding keys is a must)
Whip out range while the mob runs at you, switch to melee to kill, whip out your staff, pop a quick tiny heal, mabey a buff or two.
Dont play this game if your not into redoing their UI and dealing with a brutal learning curve, since there are no quests to guide you.
UO, Asheron's Call and Darkfall are three that quickly come to mind.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Try Runescape.
You're deluding yourself sadly.
Onto DarkFall as a poster above suggested, the crafting is on par with your typical themepark, no depth at all. There are no classes, if not for the fact that players follow the same one build of MageWarriorArcher, since it's the only viable one....so I guess that's a class? Thing is that, unlike EVE where your abilities are limited by the ships you use, DarkFall does not have such system, and specializations have little use to limit the players. Since everyone is everything, there is also no role and gear is very important.
What DarkFall does offers though is a large non-instanced world, Twitch/Skill-based FFA PvP MMORPG with no 100% Safe Zones (NPC Cities are Safer to some extent to help newer players). A decent amount of skills and spells, various monsters of all difficulty (from Goblins to Ice Dragon or Devil) with an AI at "least" better than most MMOs as there are no auto-target system. Small and Large Scale PvP and Control over Territory, Siege and Naval Warfare. That's what you'll find in DarkFall.
Name a theme park game, where crafting is needed so much....
Gear in darkfall breaks or gets looted from you in a very short period of time, usually it just breaks (you cant repair)
Never have i seen a game where you actually needed use the spam crafted items, that would otherwise be sold to an NPC as junk.
What themepark game does crafting build your fighting abilities?
And role is very important, despite you dont think so, what you wear makes or breaks your role. Everyone can be everything, however it takes a LONG time, especially magic. And you wont be a viable caster or archer wearing heavy armor meant for a front line melee role
Not trying to feed your troll post or anything (OP asked about non class based fantasy mmorpgs, not opinions on why darkfall sucks or doesnt)
Ridiculous accusations aside, and to answer your question on a themepark game where crafting is needed: Final Fantasy XI and XIV, Mabinogi, Atlantica Online, Vindictus, Ragnarok Online, and a few more. Crafing also affects your fighting ability in FF and Mabinogi.
Onto your last point, role is not important, when Mages run around with Bone Armor+(Feather) Infernal Armor pieces, giving them very important defense without the negative effect on Magic. And believe it or not, Feather enchanted Infernal Armor is rather common nowadays. Beside, melee and magic are a "must" have, which leaves Archery which is still rather important.
My presence was merely to debunk your post, so that, should OP be in fact interested in DarkFall, does not enter the game with false expectation which would cause him to, like many others, leave within the first month. It's best for players to join a game well-informed, than being ignorant and not knowing what's happening.
We're off-topic now, but my point remains, OP is deluding himself thinking there's an MMO that fits his requirements. The industry and the market simply hasn't reached that point yet, and probably won't for 2-3 more years. Good luck on your search though.
Well cloth armor isnt suppose to nerf magic, which your refering to, its why bone is so popular, however no where near as strong in the defense department. Either way, the equipment your wearing lasts a very short period of time, unlike any of the games you mentioned. There is no theme park game where you go through equipment as much as Darkfall, im sorry your wrong here.
Those games you mentioned, crafting gear is not as important, in any way. You can repair broken equipment and very easily buy or get equipment from mobs. Darkfall mobs drop gear that last like 20 battles before they break. And im pretty sure that you cant get items looted from you in most of your suggested games. Theme park crafting is nothing more than skilling garbage gear untill you can make the best, darkfall you actually use that junk. Even the cloth, when you want to not look appealing to the ganker hiding in the bushes with his volume turned up looking for shiny equipment to take.
But its well understood, you dont like Darkfall, and therefore dont suggest it as a classless fantasy mmorpg, eventhough it is.
Fail troll is fail....sorry
FYI not everyone want or can raid so they turn to crafted items so yeah there is alot of themepark MMO where crafting is important.
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

there is this game call ultima online thats got almost everythin ya lookn for sadly most mmos out today follow the spoon fed themeparks mmo. would LOVE to see somone break from the trend and revert back to the old sandboxs / non class / crafting mmos that have some depth to em and a community. your best bet in the future looks like guildwars2 . right now aside from eve and robo-eve your pretty much out of luck. oh oh wait i did forget there is this one let me see if i can find it .. its kind of a no name one but looks good. aaportal.net ... looks like an updated ver of Ultima will see how it turns out
Fallen Earth fits about all of your request... An amazing and very important crafting system, no classes etc... Not your avarage fairy tale MMORPG but if youre into trying something new, im pretty sure this will fit your needs.
If you can wait a couple months there is ArcheAge comming out ... its a lot like old UO with the best graphic you can get.
They want to release it in NA, even tho they havent got a publisher yet for it. But like most game made there it will prolly come to NA 3-6 months later.
