Thinking of buying, best controls?

Hi I am thinking of buying this game as I love DC and Superhero MMO's. I was wondering how the keyboard/mouse compare to the controller? Can you use a xbox 360 controller with the game? Also how does the keyboard/mouse combo work, does it feel like you 'should' be using a controller? Thanks in advance.

Currently playing : Darkfall
Character name : Aeola Anara
Played: Almost every P2P MMO you can get your hands on, notably:
Daoc, SWG, LOTRO, WAR, AoC + Dozens more

I started playing yesterday, and I am using keyboard and mouse.

I changed the options to WASD mode and it works fine, the only weird thing is that you do not have a free mouse. But it does not really matter that much, as you can tab to target and all your skills are on the number keys 1 to 8. And once you press I (or any other hot key like J for Quests etc) then you do get the mouse pointer icon and can navigate all the menus, loadout, skills, inventory etc with ease.

The only other time you need a mouse, during actual game play, is to initiate chat. Which is when you really notice the missing mouse icon. Pressing Enter will allow you to chat by activating the chat box and placing a cursor in the text entry box. Which I guess can suffice even if it is not ideal, as you never really chat and fight at the same time.

All in all it is wholly playable with Mouse and Keyboard and if you are used to this combo then there is no really need to use a controller. IMHO.

I don't recommend using a mouse and keyboard if you are even semi-familiar with a controller. I use an Xbox 360 controller and I thoroughly enjoy it.

There are a few things to keep in mind when starting fresh:

Just because someone is level 30 doesn't mean that you can't spank them into the ground at level 13. I've done so a few times while leveling my second character. It's one of those preconceived notions from every other MMO that if you are a higher level you will crush lower levels. While higher levels do increase your stats, HP, and Power pool a bit, skill is definitely more important than level.

The thing that makes the most difference, specially when it comes to facing people who have rushed to the level cap, is that you get 1 skill point for every 100 Feat points.

Feats are Achievements and you get them for all kinds of things, but your bread and butter for Feats are going to be from soloing the instances at the end of every quest line without dying and without using Sodas. You can also get Feats from exploring, doing races, and completing all of the side quests for each quest line.

You don't have to use an alternate weapon, but you can put points into alternate weapons to get the passive benefits. You don't need to be using the weapon to receive the passive bonuses.

Once you start getting role specifc gear, i.e. Tank gear, Controller gear, Healer gear, you do not have to be in the role to use the items. It just means that if Tank gear drops and you're a tank you can use it even if you are in damage role.

Every role has a counter. Every move has a counter.

If some one is rolling around like a fool thinking they are invincible you can counter them by Lunging (Every weapon choice has a Lunge move), using AoEs, and/or using a rush down ability from your Travel power pool.

Lunging someone who is dodge rolling hard stuns them.

Block breaking someone who is Blocking hard stuns them.

Blocking someone who is Lunging hard stuns them.

Last but not least, always do your lowest level quests first. They give great exp even when you severely out level them and they also keep you at a higher level than the bosses at the end of each quest line so that you can farm some Feats for skill points early on. This only works up to a point and then you really need to bring your A game to get the higher level feats for going through an instance without dying or using Sodas.

Hope that helps and good luck to you.

I bought it from D2D since it was cheaper than all the other places and it downloaded very quick with their download manager. Where did you get it from ?

The Xbox 360 controller is the way to go.  I started out with Keyboard and Mouse.  It's what I always prefer when I play mmos on the PC, but this is really not a PC game, it's a console game disguised as an MMO on the PC.  The controller is better for me in this case.  I recommend it.

I only played for about 15 seconds with keyboard and mouse before switching over the my Xbox 360 controller. 100% designed for playing with a controller, only thing I use my mouse for is to set the zoom level of the camera before I start playing.

Melee gameplay may suck for some with Keyboard and mouse but Ranged gameplay is more fun with the keyboard and mouse but works with the pad.

    This is not a game.

For combat, either works fine in my opinion. I still cant turn or switch targets as well with a controller over a mouse, but that is a minor point. Navigating the menus is still easier with a M+KB imo even if they were made all wonky for controllers. I'd go with what you are comfortable with.

To Zoom in and out with the controller hold the LB1 button or Left Bumper and zoom in and out with the directional pad or left thumb stick.

For easier targeting hold the same button LB1 or Left Bumper and hit right or left on the directional pad.

A keyboard/mouse provides better controls.  The controllers make targeting a pita.

I use a keyboard and mouse.  If you are use to WASD type control you shouldn't have any trouble getting use to the controls. A lot of people like the Xbox 360 controller for this game.

K/B is far better and easy to use.
