I think thre's two things that can help allay your fears:
1) There are plenty of sandbox games ranging in design from the Second Life and MineCraft type to Puzzle Pirates and Mortal Online.
2) No MMO release in the past 15 years of MMOs has ever caused the closing of another MMO.

Despite it's flaws, MO caters to a type of play with very few options and only 2 that have a better track record so far (EVE, Darkfall)
