Square Enix has been "sub par" in recent years. And that's putting it gently.
FF XIII and FF XIV come right to mind. I think SE has lost a bit of Blind Loyalty they once had with the Final Fantasy franchise.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
The whole series, even the bad games like VII I can appreciate.
With that said, the King did not buy 13. The King wasn't too terribly impressed with 12. I did like 12's DS game which was a RTS style game really. 13-2? Well I actually enjoyed X-2 more than I did X. So, if they offer something interesting to do that doesn't have much to to with the dismal characters they created in 13- then maybe I'll be interested to try it.
Right now I can wait for 13 and 13-2 to make it to the bargain bins.
My only gripe about it is that it's not as expansive as the other final fantasy games. I really liked all those sidequests and stuff in the old games. Still, Vanille is cute.

I think the liener aspect of the game that most people tend to object to. Final Fantasy game have always really been seen as games where there's the main storyline, but the main enjoyment is to go out and explore, do quests and stuff, find treasure. It was a bit of a shock to me when it was made so...streamlined shall we say.
Sorry, but the first game Square-Enix made that was a Final Fantasy game was FFXII. FFX-2 was released in Japan a month before the merger was finalized and completed. Truth is that the founder of Square only owns 6% of Square-Enix. If you don't believe me. Here is the list of shareholders...
Sorry, but the best thing for Square would be to become independent again and then make PC games only which would give them digital distribution services like Steam (or they can make their own) and open themselves up to the world to give Fresh Japanese-Only games with English Menu Translation and Subtitles. They could then market at a global level without having to waste money delivering through shipping and packaging.
This would cause a new breath of life to go into Square (after a typical Japanese-Loyalty outrage...the usual mob) and they could make original ideas and as far as funding goes, if they can buy out their own shares and retain their own Final Fantasy rights, they can really do a lot of work in there and perhaps revive older series that were popular too.
I loved Parasite Eve and Chrono Trigger/Cross, and hate how after Square-Enix was made, almost every blasted Square series was put on the back burner except for Final Fantasy or its derivatives.
That's true. Merger's happen though. No stopping them.
Some interesting ideas there, but PC market is pretty much dead for developers. It's a sink due to easy access to piracy and the fact that many people own a staggering variety of computer systems, so requirements and accommodating for all that limits them further.
New breath of life is something a company such as Square is unable to do simply because they are so well known. Perhaps this latest may set them back on track, or it will continue down the same path it has always done. A developer changes as they grow, and that become apparant in the games that they produce. Different goals.
Though, to be fair and balance out a little bit, there are games that look like they are likely to be quite fun. Things like Mindjack, Deus Ex, and Dungeon Siege. Though you're right, Final Fantasy does get overused way too much.
I'm one of those people that bought the game thinking, "FINAL FANTASY?! HOLY SHIT! I'VE GOT TO PLAY!" Much to my surprise (not really) it was too easy, very short for a FF kind of game, and didn't really meet my expectations. Sadly I think I'll buy 13-2 as well. I just can't go without playing a single FF release even if it totally failed (like a certain online MMORPG they released recently *cough cough*)

Truer words have never been spoken my friend. And yes, I too will also be buying this game because quite simply, I can't help myself to RPG goodness. I'm a glutton for RPG.

DS,PSP,360, and now the PS3 are all wide open to piracy the same as PC. And consoles having only one set of requirements compared to PC doesn't seem to matter much, otherwise console games wouldn't be getting patched just like PC games after release. Then again, developers used to care about their product. Now they just shove it out for the money and say "We'll patch it later, promise!".
That's the only thing I'll give S-E as far as FFXIII. The game was shit ( for a FF game), but it waas rock solid right out of the box, just ike console games used to be before the "patch crutch" was introduced. If anything they need to stick to consoles and get off PC soley because they don't have a clue how PC games should work compared to consoles ( see FFXI and FFXIV).

Believe it or not some people actually liked XIII. I however never actually played it enough to say one way or the other.
Here's a link from the official US S-E site

The site the OP posted works fine, you need Flash Player 10 to use is all.
I always have issues with FP10 but I used a different browser and as you said the site worked fine.
ANYWAY.
What do you lot think? Good/bad?
If it's the same old stuff I think it'll cause a bit of an upset with an already disgruntled FF fanbase.
Though they are promising a lot of changes with this one, so maybe.
I mean, FFX-2 made a good game turn bad, so perhaps it works vice versa as well?

Yeah, handhelds are very easy to pirate these days. All you need is an R4 card and you are good to go.
Consoles not so much so, it's harsher territory and requires a bit more engineering methinks.
Except Wii, that's easy to softmod. They even made a channel appear just for it, funnily enough using Zelda as a bypass.
