Guardian reminds me of the Guardian class in LOTRO. I wonder at the similarities?

Yea Logan never really looked awesome from the get-go, especially in-game.

    This is not a game.

Well I'm not really impressed witht the name "Guardian". Seems too.. dunno. "Guardian" - it's missing something archetypal like "paladin" or "knight"

Imo they chose "guardian" just to try to be different from other mmo classes of that type (a tank that can throw a heal or buff or two). :( Bah. They'll probably call the engineer or even better gadgeteer (you know the guys with tech and gadgets) into something original sounding like "gunner" (ugly and misleading word if I ever heard one) or "tactician" (lol, just lol).

Oh well, what's in a name? I'd be much more pleased with "paladin" and WoW be damned.

IF it's a monk replacement class focusing on protection then guardian is the perfect title for it, theres currently a protection prayers skill in GW called Guardian, all works for me :)

Well it is a matter of taste.... "Guardian" hmm... "guardian" - it guards... hmmm... hmm.... not really, no - doesn't do it for me. It's like calling warrior a "hitter" or elementalist a... "hitter" again. It might make sense from a GW1 perspective but i'm looking at a a bit wider, like iconic archetypal perspective.

On the other hand it might be just me. "Guardian"... the guy that guards.. what? from whom? It's just not.. dunno. It's like calling the engineer a "tactician" - well everybody uses tactics, why would that guy be a "tactician"? Or "gunner" - so he has guns - so what? He's supposed to have all kinds of tech-wizardry at his disposal as well  - so why "gunner"? Hmm.. still don't like the name "guardian". Oh well, like it's important anywayz lol.

Your logic could be applied to any profession in any game.

Well yeah, that's why I said it's a matter of personal taste. Completely subjective thing not really worth arguing about.  But anyways I'm entitled to it  as long as I don't try to rationalize it and try pushing it down anybody's throat. :D So... wait till thursday for the sweet vids and skill reveals? Well if they keep churning them out at the rate of the first big hype push we might tentatively place the release date at late summer / early fall 2011 - that's something to chew on. :)

Even though it has the name Guardian, I don't think it's a tank type class. It will be a support class, I imagine, that uses skills such as those from the protection line in the monk profession of GW1.

still cant wait for more info!

Logan (a Guardian) and Mesmers are a prominent part of the second book, and a subtle part of the first one. They're there, no worries.

totally intentional cuz theyre not yet ready to release all the info yet till thursday and this is their way of satiating the ravenous GW2 crowd - a teaser that will have people talking and speculating over the weekend

I suppose so! I'm still excited. I can't wait to play one and have those awesome wings on my helmet!

I'm thinking its going to go with a bit of Restoration magic from the Rit and Protection from the Monk, basically Vengeful weapon with an extra sting.

    This is not a game.

    Yeah that's the key!

    "Guardian" wings!

You know like "guardian angels" have wings!?

Now it all falls into place...

It seems they are on a pattern BTW. So we won't be getting the mesmer next either. It'll be second to last revealed.

i bet that the guardian is a mishmash of a Prot/smite monk and a Weapon-spell rit from GW1, seeing the blue hued throwing hammer in some concepts of Logan

Eq2 have had the class even longer. But if I am not wrong it seems to be closer to a pally here.

I guess we find out on thursday. Still, I don't like the name, it lacks some of the finesse that certain classes are and are not as descriptive as the rest.

I already know what a ranger and a warrior does but a guardian just reminds me of the 2 stupid guards in Monty python and the quest for the holy grail.

I hope they change the name before release. The class in itself are no real surprise.

Yeah, well "paladin" is a bit... compromised with the wow pallly and historically it really doesn't mean what it grew to mean in fantasy rpgs (it all started with damn d&d, remember?)

If anyone asked me (and no one is as I can see) I'd go with the plain old "knight". It's got a nice ring to it - it's iconic and yet wide enough in scope. Knights - guys in heavy armour lumbering around and protecting the weak from evil. I like "knight". It's both evocative and descriptive. It's iconic. I'd go for "knight" if anyone asked me. Guardian is like... you know "parental guardians" or something.

"GW2 has 2 soldier classes - Warrior and Knight". That's cool - they're at equal footing these two guys. One is like a wild man with swords and axes and stuff and the other dude is the more like a virtuous spiritual tin can with a big sword so you better watch out to make fun of him.

"GW2 has 2 soldier classes - Warrior and Guardian". - Warrior and who?

  • eye_meye_m Member UncommonPosts: 3,317

Everybody wants to see the mesmer, so I bet it's one of the last to be released. I can't imagine them dropping the class, it was so fundamental to GW.

Guardian sounds like an uber-tank class, but thats only cause thats what Guardians are in AoC.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

But it's NOT different from other MMO's. Both LOTRO and Aion have Guardians, and if I'm reading a site dedicated to EQ2 correctly it has a Guardian as well. I'm sure there's probably at least one more MMO out there that I'm missing that also has a guardian class.

Aion doesn't have Guardians. Any name they use, unless completely made up, will have been used before in another mmo. In addition, I don't think this Guardian profession will function like the other guardians have. Perhaps they will support the group by trying to protect them but it certainly won't be in a classical sense.

You're right, I'm confusing that with Aion's Gladiators.

Actually I think you are confusing them with Templars.

Guardiands are closer to the concept of a cleric. But instead of healing spells, they have more proactive deffence skills.

  • Outkast22Outkast22 Member Posts: 51

I agree with the few people that pointed out the paladin. If that is the case I hope it is more like a DAoC pally then a WoW one.

Actually, paladin would not fit well.

ArenaNet makes it so the classes are universal and does not seem too restrictive. They simply call a class based on it's core. Not what it does, or what group they are... just something that shows what the core is, uniquely. An elementalst will use elements to attack, defend, and support. A mesmer will use illusions to "mesmerize," be it attack or defend. A guardian should and most likely will use a form of guard to attack defend and support. Most attacks will probably be played off countering.

What would paladin be though? The problem with paladin is that it's not a core word, paladins are a group. Not only that, but paladins are a holy group. And to be holy, one must have faith. As you may or may not know, faith does not spread across all of Tyria. So a paladin would not fit, simply because the group of paladin doesn't exist in the GW world, and if it does, it would most certainly be within the human society only. The same for the templars. Templars are christian related, and Jesus does not exist in Tyria.

Calling a class "paladin" or "templar" is similar to calling a ranger "Navajo." Indians mainly consisted of archers and ranged spearmen, but they simply don't exist in Tyria. Like-wise, Paladins and Templars consisted of mainly heavy-armored shield-wielding protectors, but neither group exists in Tyria.

Edit: With the little guardian gameplay we have seen, I would like to point out that when a divine cross is shown, it is disfigured and un-related to the christian cross.

Or, they could rape the lore and come up with some silly explanation why Asura have Paladins. Blizzard style...

More work to delay the game... does not sit well with me, especially when they could just roll "guardian" instead.

What if their information is a bit old and they should have just written warrior? Pretty sure I have seen that screen cap before, from a video maybe? I am not sold yet personally.
