Honestly, I think that they do this pretty well. The last beta I did 1-13ish pure questing and then did rifts, dailies, and artifact quests to get up to 20. You don't necessarily need to do all the quests. I believe the "going off the rails" comments are talking about not necessarily needing to do every quest like some other MMO's would have you do.
They need to break some of the links between hubs. Nothing stops you going off the rails but you have to join the track pretty much where you left it, you can't just get on at the next station. I hope they make this very simple fix.
...Rift developers have stated time and again that they have spend countless hours providing for content you wont find by following the usual quest hubs. If you never leave the rails of the ride, then you simply will not know about any of it.
Been following the game for quite a while and I do not recognize this as something they said, which is a good thing, because it would be a lie.
I think that statement is geared towards Rifts, World PvP, Artifact collecting, professions, etc... The alternatives to just grinding quests.

It is a good game. But it does not feel like an mmorpg. It is very difficult to get off the tracks and explore, because there is not that much to explore. Crafting is overly simplistic and imo not finished yet. PvP and doing dungeons is probably the best part of the game. The solo content is boring and feels like a quest grind.
For release it will do. I am curious what direction this game will take after release though. They might do great things, they need to do great things and show more inspiration than they have shown thusfar by delivering something that works and is great fun playing, but not enough to keep playing.
That's your opinion...
I love the quests! I really feel like a hero with the quest texts npc background, and some of the quests being moderately difficult adds a refreshing breeze to my long run of MMO grind fest.
I don't think it's difficult to get "off the rails" at all... during beta I was running into rifts left and right... I really think you have to purposely stay on the rails in a game like Rift.
Personally an MMORPG should be focused on the character, and being able to do whatever they want. That's why it's a Role Playing Game. I think Rift achieves this with style because you can choose to go for Rifts, you can choose to PvP, you can choose to go looking for artifacts. I'm not sure what you expect in a role playing game, but I look for immersion and being able to choose how I want to spend my time... Rift offers just that.

I've heard this was an issue when I was in beta I didn't notice it... I felt like I had too many quests in fact I had to abandon a lot of them...
However, if this is an issue I fully agree with you...It's an easy fix, and will vastly improve the game. Next beta I will have to check for this.
I am a big rift fan and have played through all the beta's thus far and I am worried about this problem. During the beta I sometimes find myself not logging in even though I have nothing else to do as I feel a little burnt out. Now its not such a big deal for me because I will be playing regardless, but if I feel this way then there must be a fair few others that feel like it and they might be deciding if they will play the game at release or not based on these beta's.
Just hope that these beta's don't create hype at the expense of actual subscribers at release
This is a sign of a larger form of burnout with gaming in general. I would suggest picking up some hobbies and doing more non-gaming activities. I doubt many people are experiencing this though as Rift is beyond busy during events.
Why do Rift fans always claim that anyone not finding this game exciting or fun are sufffering from 'burnout'.
It really could be, y'know, that they just don't THIS game exciting or fun.
Amen to this. I am grateful to Trion for allowing me into the Beta test. It allowed me to save $90 by canceling my pre-order.
I didn't find this game very exciting or fun. Some parts of if were actually quite dull. I'm also not burnt out on the genre. I've been playing MMOs since '99 and I still actively play and enjoy two others so that is hardly burnt out.
I just found this game to be lacking attention to detail and depth that was in games released 10 years ago. That's how I personally feel about it. Your impressions may differ and thats fine. I understand that some people think this is the holy grail they have been seeking and more power to them. I guess they are more easily pleased than me. I'm still looking for my MMO upgrade and the wait continues I guess.

Maybe all good now. Beta 3 there where definately issues on the Guardian side. Several people got stuck getting there 3rd soul as they missed some seemingly unconnected quest way back.

I played guardian, and didn't hear about this. As we have said, if it's a problem it's also a quick fix. I'm sure it will be fixed.

I don't think he did. I think he paid for 3 months or so. What made him change his mind still eludes us though.

He tested it and he didnt like it thats what made him changes his mind and i respect that but i really dont understand why you would be prepared to pony up $90 on a game you were unsure of. If you arent sure get the cheapest version and opt for the month by month option. What would lead someone to do otherwise (i am actually interested in the answer and am not trolling).

I have never said that. I can except that others don't like Trion's approach of polish over depth.
They can't have both polish and depth?
You tell them. I don't know why they did it this way.
I think polish AND depth is a realistic goal personally.
I am not even sure when people use the term 'polish' for Rift they use my defintion of the term... when I say 'polish' I mean the fluff and extras are there (which they just arnt in Rift's case- it is a very spartan shallow game), rather then 'it works'.
I really think this one will succeed in every way. I base this off of a few things (which I am not going to bore you on). I have been 100% on my picks over the past 10 years and I do not see any change in that. Time will tell.
I have only seen one person posting about getting a refund, not "alot" like someone posted earlier. The guy who was wanting a refund was a complete ninny. He ranted that Trion lied because he "thought" he read somewhere it was going to be F2P.....
Like somoene told him, "hey idiot" they spent like 100 million on development....it is going to be sub based (which I am totally happy with).

I'm a 'Collector's Edition' junkie. That's what the cost (plus shipping)was. I pre-ordered on the strength of the write ups of the game(and some of the hype) and was lucky to get a beta invite. What I experienced after trying it convinced me that I would not be interested in playing it. Good luck to everyone who is making this their MMO home.

I agree with this right here ^^. I only did the quests to get out of the tutorial and the gathering profession ones, everything else was 'off the rails' as you state. I really hate MMO games that force you to do the quest lines to play. I will do them if I feel like it, most times its pick a few up when I need to hit a hub to mail or sell and if I ever get around to finishing them I may turn them in next time I need to hit that hub again for some other reason. Rift gives me this freedom in spades. There is plenty to do without doing the quest hub lines, actually I find Rift to be one of the few with 'always something going on'. Hell I even went from level 11 to level 18 in the Warfront in a day, got my level 13 PvP weapon at level 12 and my PvP soul by 17. Spent the next 4 levels just out exploring and collecting glowies and hitting the rifts, invasions, footholds, and zone bosses.
I really dont understand how people are basing thier entire vision of Rift on the quests when you dont even have to do them at all to play Rift. So much more out there to do than 'ride the rails'.
Oh yeah, and to the guy that says he has followed this game and know they never said anything like that, may I suggest you go to the Rift forums and do some reading. Not only are there multiple threads about exploring, but pretty much every one of them has been visited by a Dev telling how they have and will be adding even more later on. Not sure how you could miss it if you were actually following the game like you said. Not trying to be confrontational, just noting the inaccuracy of that comment.

See, that's my concern...
- Is there really not that much to explore? Are they perhaps just "holding back" content, as has been suggested to me they might be doing, in terms of how much is "out there" in the world?
I don't know, but both I and my wife have really been wanting to get into Rift, but it seems that most people are echoing the same sentiment of: "the world is small and extremely linear, and there's really no exploration/anything to find", which is a huge problem, as far as I, and many others, are concerned.
Is there anything "out there" to find? Other creatures to fight, even, that are "off the beaten path"?
I just don't get how such a PvE-centric game could be so lacking in any exploration to such a degree, that there's really not even much to find out in the world...? It just doesn't make sense to me, and I'm hoping something changes/is different at launch, because I/we've been looking forward to Rift for a while.

See, this response confuses me, when it seems that 75%+ of people are stating that there's not anything "off the rails" to do in-game.
Countless people are stating that the world is rather small, limited and that there's nothing to really find or do outside the quest line; that there's no real exploration and nothing to really even find to fight, outside of the quest baddies, and Rift baddies.
I'm totally lost with what's what regarding Rift at this point.
its not its the doomsayers that have seen through level 27 and talked crap about this game on THIS site that is calling it bad. I would put ZERO faith in forum posts here on this site about Rift as for everyone that enjoys it about 50 trolls got something bad to say about it. There is content and there is things in it that other mmo's do not have like public quest content that only warhammer had and is alot more involved. I've been in beta since the first one released and can tell you the only thing linear is the quest lines and they award XP for leveling through quests , pve rifts , and pvp. Everytime a new game releases there is 100% negative hype for it on this site , and its been that way for as long as I've visited this site.

Thats amazing, really it is. Your last paragraph says how you just can't believe its possible that all the nay sayers are right that there isnt anything but a small linear path and nothing off of it. But then you go on about how those are the only people you believe, even when there are just as many of us telling you they are wrong (oh and please stop using 'most people' when it isnt most people). Makes me ponder if you want there to be, or if you want to believe there isnt.

I think you need to chill with your skewed off-the-cuff judgments, as I'm making no such statements, nor attempting to get across any such sentiments, so calm your attitude and the "psychiatrist" routine, analyzing my post to death.
I never said, not once, those were "the only people I believe"; it's made clear that I'm attempting to figure out who to believe.
Quite honestly, yes, it has been "most people", in terms of the feedback I've seen regarding the supposed (notice, I said "supposed") linearity and size of the world.
Take your attitude elsewhere, and let someone else without paranoid delusions respond.

That's because players today are so conditioned to just "do the quests" that they don't try to do anything different. The quests are there, yes, for the people that like that kind of gameplay. But simply grinding mobs, doing Rifts, PvP, and exploring are just as valid to level your character.
If you don't want to do the quests you don't have to. The only quests you really have to do would be the ones to unlock your other class souls. The rest of the quest lines are completely optional.
This is a very similar problem to what ArenaNet experienced when they first started focu testing GW2. There were no quest markers or people telling players what to do. Because of that people that had been conditioned by WoW to look for quests would just run right by farms burning, NPCs getting slaughtered by centaurs, etc. because they didn't have a quest to help.
There are no rails in Rift, but there is a road. It's up to you if you're driving a sports car or a Jeep.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."

Great response, and makes sense. The mentality of people can skew their perspectives on what a game has to offer/is offering, depending on wha they're used to doing.
However, when you say "grinding mobs", is that to insinuate that there are indeed other enemies etc. to find "off the beaten path", other than just the Rift spawns? So you're saying there are other things to find/fight other than just the Rifts and quest baddies?
Definitely, my whole point... there are other ways than quests to level and enjoy yourself, which is exactly what I'm looking for, but just thrown-off due to so many people stating "there's nothing to really find/explore".
Definitely would be fantastic to find out that there's more in the world to find, even in terms of just different enemy types, through exploring.

Seriously?? Your gona jump up and down and go all ape over that?? Read your post again man, take a fiver to have a smoke, drink a couple brews and relax. Then come back and ...... Really, I read your post and responded to the content in it, you dont like it thats your freakin problem.
You want me to break it down for ya, fine lets do that shall we. (WARNING - WALL OF TEXT WHICH MAY BE IGNORED BY ANYONE NOT COMPLETELY BORED) I'm bored so gonna have some fun here.
See, that's my concern...
Ok, this one statement, says your concerned over the the comment the previous poster made which you responded to of "It is a good game. But it does not feel like an mmorpg. It is very difficult to get off the tracks and explore, because there is not that much to explore." And by being concerned, that would mean you have to have the thought in your head that you believe this statement might be true. Still with me here? Oh and you said it not me, I'm just reading what you wrote rememeber?
- Is there really not that much to explore? Are they perhaps just "holding back" content, as has been suggested to me they might be doing, in terms of how much is "out there" in the world?
And once again, yes this is only the sec ond sentance of your post, you lead off with the comment of "Is there really not that much to explore?". This sentance adds more credibility to the previous comment of 'that would mean you have to have the thought in your head that you believe this statement might be true' which I made. The next sentance above continues to bring this impression out as well as you continue to question the idea that they are holding back content. By believeing they have little there now, it leaves open the thought that they are holding some back. I didn't lose you yet did I?
I don't know, but both I and my wife have really been wanting to get into Rift, but it seems that most people are echoing the same sentiment of: "the world is small and extremely linear, and there's really no exploration/anything to find", which is a huge problem, as far as I, and many others, are concerned.
Now we get onto your third comment in your post, the one where you make your statement "but it seems that most people are echoing the same sentiment of: "the world is small and extremely linear, and there's really no exploration/anything to find"". I feel this makes a huge splash in regards to the question of wether or not you believe there is a small and extremely linear world and no exploration in the game, hell I would even go so far as to say that is EXACTLY what you said there. Because it is. Again, your words NOT mine. You do say it concerns you again, but we covered that in your first comment so no need to further reenforce what this means again.
Oh and I want to take a break here to clarify one thing, even though you feel this is psychoanalizing your comments word for word, its not. Its call reading comprehension. You write it, I read it. I'm not making up words and adding them to yours, all I'm doing is reading what you wrote and comprehending it.
Is there anything "out there" to find? Other creatures to fight, even, that are "off the beaten path"?
Ok, so anyway here we are onto comment number four. In this one, well yeah, its another one of the same. Except in this one you went out of your way to make use of some empasis tools. So lets take a look at those shall we. You lead off with "Is there anything "out there"". A great question, emphsis placed on the word anything by placing it in italicized font to bring it to the forfront in order to make sure the reader understood you dont believe there really is ANYTHING out there to find. You then tied that short one liner form hell together with the second sentance (even though the second one is a fragmented sentance and probably should have been included in the first anyway, but we wont go into grammar lessons right now ok), and included the words off the beaten path in qutotation marks to further emphasize that there isn't anything - out there - off the beaten path. See how that works?
I just don't get how such a PvE-centric game could be so lacking in any exploration to such a degree, that there's really not even much to find out in the world...? It just doesn't make sense to me, and I'm hoping something changes/is different at launch, because I/we've been looking forward to Rift for a while.
And finally lets move on to your last point. First off the first sentance of it shows how much you dont understand about Rift in general. There is as much PvP in the game as there is PvE, so lets start out by letting everyone here know how little you know abou tthe game personally. And if we figure that lil tidbit of knowledge in, we look at the remainder of this topic with a slightly different view. You state you think the game is "lacking in an exploration to such a degree, that there's really not even much to find out in the world". This is just another among so many comments in your post that reenforces the concept that you personally do not believe there is any in Rift. And last but not least you finish up with the hope that "something changes/is different at launch" because as you put it your looking forward to to Rift. I can't help but wonder how your looking forward to it with almost your entire post coming off as a well handled post describing how you think Rift has no exploration content and how 'most people' agree with you.
Now yes, to finish out your request to have your post analyzed to death (yes you did ask for it when you accused me of doing it in the first place when I was not) I will finish with the following comment. Yes, I know you "never said, not once, those were "the only people I believe"; it's made clear that I'm attempting to figure out who to believe." And my point was "Makes me ponder if you want there to be, or if you want to believe there isnt.". Because quite frankly, I am not seeing much in your first post (which is the one I responded too) which point to even an acknoledgement that you have read ANY of the posts from the people who disagree with your "most people". And as I said at the start of my first post, I still find it "amazing" that even in your hostile second post, you still haven't acknowledged the existance of feedback from the other side of the topic. You may not be conciously leaving it out, but you are leaving it out none the less.
So, just one last question for you, have I succeeded in using my "attitude and the "psychiatrist" routine" and made sure I was "analyzing" your "post to death"? If I haven't please by all means let me know and I will try to do better the next time around. But yeah, if your read your first post, word for word, in the context you placed there (emphasis, italicized text, sentance structure, paragraph structure, included facts, excluded facts), then you can see how I formed my first response. And it doesn't look paranoid to me at all. It really does look paranoid to you? Really??
Anywho, I hope yall had as much fun with this lesson on the use of words and thier meanings as I did in presenting it! Lets all hope I NEVER have to do this again hahahahaha.
EDIT: Oh missed one "So you're saying there are other things to find/fight other than just the Rifts and quest baddies?"...OMGZ thats what we have been trying to tell you this whole time!!
...Rift developers have stated time and again that they have spend countless hours providing for content you wont find by following the usual quest hubs.
Good to hear that. And as long as you feel that way this is your game.
Personally I am just hopeful about what this game might become. Thusfar this game looks very promising, but I do understand what Vesavius is saying. And he is not completely wrong. This game has some serious shortcomings in the department that interests him the most.
In contrast to your claim the game is severely lacking in the department of immersion. I don't know whether the game needs more fluff or depth or whatever, but I see it trying to compensate by sending waves of invasions after the beta testers. In you case the attempt to cover up its short-comings is succesful. In my case, I have been playing this game for some time now and I see its shortcomings.
I just hope the devs see them too and they decide to address this problem in the future. If not, Rift will remain a hack and slash experience in mmo format. Because, no matter what you do the rifts will keep coming. It makes no difference how many footholds you clear. Your efforts do not matter. You have no impact on the world. You do not matter. Not that it bothers me that much, but the world is a constant war front and offers little or nothing to care about. That is a problem, methinks.
Anyway, I am definitely going to buy and play this game at least for 6 months before I will decide what to do next.
yeah I agree I probably wont get past 25 or 30.. but not everyone will be able to hold back from playing, do you guys think maybe there should be a level cap to the last beta events soo no one gets to max level and sees everything there is before release?
I really think this one will succeed in every way. I base this off of a few things (which I am not going to bore you on). I have been 100% on my picks over the past 10 years and I do not see any change in that. Time will tell.
weird statement....
I would have thought that anyone '100%' on their choices of MMORPGs over the last 10 years wouldnt be looking for a new one...

Let's is what Phoenix Wright has to say on the subject.
Comments
They need to break some of the links between hubs. Nothing stops you going off the rails but you have to join the track pretty much where you left it, you can't just get on at the next station. I hope they make this very simple fix.
That's your opinion...

I've heard this was an issue when I was in beta I didn't notice it... I felt like I had too many quests in fact I had to abandon a lot of them...
However, if this is an issue I fully agree with you...It's an easy fix, and will vastly improve the game. Next beta I will have to check for this.
If you are not sure you are going to like a game or not why would you preorder the $80 collectors edition?
I don't think he did. I think he paid for 3 months or so. What made him change his mind still eludes us though.
He tested it and he didnt like it thats what made him changes his mind and i respect that but i really dont understand why you would be prepared to pony up $90 on a game you were unsure of. If you arent sure get the cheapest version and opt for the month by month option. What would lead someone to do otherwise (i am actually interested in the answer and am not trolling).
lol no, I havent been called that particular thing yet... maybe because I have never mnetioned WoW (having never played it )
I think polish AND depth is a realistic goal personally.

Really?
Seriously?? Your gona jump up and down and go all ape over that?? Read your post again man, take a fiver to have a smoke, drink a couple brews and relax. Then come back and ...... Really, I read your post and responded to the content in it, you dont like it thats your freakin problem.
