I just started playing again after I quitted soon after launch.
I'm suprisingly having a blast. I'm playing on telemachus EU and there are a lot of players running around doing stuff everywhere. Also The goldsellers/bots are somewhat nonexistent now with the new security pin. (Or I have been lucky to not encounter them), at least it's much better.
The community is also ok-ish, the biggest pack of mmo hoppers have moved on and a solid friendly/helpfull core remains.
I'm just keeping my sub untill something better comes along, because this game is just awsome polished and much improved since I last played.
Now haters gonna hate, but please this game is great, if you can't see furter than your 1 week in-game at launch, shut the heck up.
I'll take you up on the bet, I don't know what data you are looking at, but if you look at the data from MMOChart Aion is not even in the top 10! I played during the December period and did not see many people on. I will have to call you on that as being nonsense unless you can provide some provable numbers.
You mean this (http://www.mmogchart.com/)? Someone correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't that site not been updated in years? >.>
These are estimated numbers, but the consensus is that Aion is still holding around 3 million worldwide.
Here is the site. http://mmodata.blogspot.com/ They also give a nice explanation and what numbers they feel are accurate/innacurate.
I was not disputing world wide figures for Aion, my only contention was it is not doing very well in the west and the support staff they have here for the west is one of the worst I have ever dealth with. The game just does not compete well in this western market, of course some of that can be placed on the horrible support staff.
The game still has problems, fighting in flight still has issues attached to it, Personally, when you make a pvp game where excellent equipement is so important which is not readily accessible to everyone you are going to have detractors. That does not seem to be an issue to the eastern players.

I don't know how much of the numbers are Western, but I can say that the server I play on (Lumiel) is as populated as the locked/high population WoW servers I've played on, perhaps more so. Sanctum, the first tier low level areas like Verteron, the Abyss, and Balurea are literally overflowing with players. Granted, Aion has only a fraction of the number of servers of WoW, but the populations for each are VERY healthy. I also play LotRO, CoH, and EQ2 regularly, and I've never seen them nearly as crowded as Aion is currently.
I have played Wow for 4 years, and Aion on release for 4 months, then grew tired of the grind. Servers were reduced or consolidated but now I see it growing like crazy once again. It's a great thing!
Aion is one game I always go back to, as it's the most beautiful game and can hold my interest for hours on end. I've tried AoC with too many install /patch /gameplay issues and was so disappointed. Aion has none of those problems. It still has potential to be a fabulous game if the developers keep open to requests of its subscribers.

Worst back-pedal in history.
