World of Tanks Review

Here we are once again, on yet another review (or troll post to the less receptive). For once, I'm actually at a loss for words on how to describe this game. Believe me when I say, there isn't alot of negative things I can say about it, but what I can say, is that I have never before had so much fun with a player vs player game. Granted, there are alot of complaints from players that SPG's or mobile artillary is over powered, that it's not fair that your pitted against armor that is tougher than what you have, and so on and so forth. But despite that, it's hard not to get into this game, and want to keep coming back. Regardless of wether you like dishing out the pain, or taking a spanking, anyone who has the reflexes, time, and energy can get into this game. So then, let's not waste anymore time puzzleing over the drool puddle at my feet, and get on with the breakdown!!

-graphics, While some may see the graphics of this game as anything but stellar, they're not all that bad. The tanks are very well detailed, as is the surrounding terrain. The local European villages you find the teams pitted against one another are simply breath taking. Transition over the maps themselves involves zero clipping (or rubber banding as some of you may know it as), and loads quickly. Even on low end and stock systems.

-teamup system, For lack of a better word to describe this, this is what has caused a great deal of tension amongst the players of this game. While some will view it as a challenge, others will complain that it just isn't fair to find themselves going up against a stronger target. This is where team work comes in, and has been proven time and again when taking down tougher targets. But just the same, whoever is on your team and on the opposing team is chosen at random from each of the ten tiers. You might get lucky enough to face opponents that are your equal, or your lessers. Either way, it still adds a sence of dangerous thrill just trying to stay alive while pinging shells off the armor of the intended target.

-tank breakdown, To start off, your given three tanks, all of them of the light class. I will get into the classes shortly, so stay with me. You have three nations to choose from to base your technology research off of. You have the Germans, Americans and the Russians. Each of these three nations' tanks have their own strengths and weaknesses. You won't have much to start off with, and it will take some time to figure out which tree you want to research from, and what suits your style more. So spend your gold wisely when choosing which class you will ultimately use. Also, each tank that is available, is a World War I and II era tank. Each more deadly than the last. So, as promised, it's time to get to the breakdown of each of the tank classes. Those being light, medium, heavy, tank destroyers and SPG's.

Light tanks are your scout class. They have weak weapons and armor, but very fast and very agile.

Medium tanks are your rush type class. They're great for getting behind enemy lines, and neutralizing enemy artillary. They are also great when supporting the heavies.

Heavy tanks are your hard hitters. While slow and cumbersome, they can dish out a great deal of damage, while soaking up more than enough to stay in the fight.

Tank Destroyers, while these do not have a turret to make their job easier. They are still deadly just the same. One shot from these babies, and it's safe to say that that higher tier heavy you were sweating about, is nothing more than a crater.

SPG's have been a cause of contention amongst the players. Some love them, and some hate them with a passion. Either way, they are an invaluable asset in any arsenal. While the first two tiers are not very accurate, they make up for it in sheer power. Their armor is very weak, and can be killed in a single hit. Their best bet for survival, is the good ol fassioned shoot and scoot method. Which, keeps the enemy artillary from zeroing in on your location every time.

-research and development, Research is the only method to opening new tanks and equipment. The better your tank's armament, tracks, engines, turret and radio, the longer you will last in a fight. But let's not forget your tank's crew. They also gain experience for every battle they do damage, and survive. This also opens up new skills for them to use, and also aids in the operation of your chosen class of tank.

-mission, Your mission, should you choose to accept it, and yadda yadda. This message will self destruct in ten seconds. Ok, that was a bit lame, but I just couldn't resist. There really is no other mission or than to either or destroy all tanks on the field, or capture the enemy base. So, it's pretty cut and dry. Is it fun? I have to say yes it is, and then some!!

-community, As always, I like to say something about the community in general. In game, there are alot of cowboys that want to try to take on the world, and not be a team player. Those are the ones you see become a crater within seconds. Some like to sit there and brag about how they have "several" higher tier tanks, and call everyone else tier two noobs. But those are the ones that are easilly dismissed just by saying, "If your so good, then why are you so dead right now?" That usually keeps them quiet. Other than that, it's great fun giving running commentaries, and watching the other players join right in. Even if it's a loseing battle, it still releaves alot of the tension, and reminds everyone that this is just a game. The forum community is full of alot of complaints, random rants, but otherwise you can still find some helpful suggestions here and there.

While some will argue that this is not an MMO, it still has some of the same basic ingredients that defines one. Classes, experience and money gained, point allocation (for some), strong emphasis on team work, in game chat box, and weapons. While some will argue that this game is boreing, and offers nothing. I have to disagree, it offers a great way to releave your daily frustrations, and your baser instinct to want to blow something up. I have enjoyed this game so much, that I have invited several of my own friends to come and try this out, and we talk about it all day during work. Not because we don't have anything better to do all day, but because it not only helps make the day go by faster, but gives us all a common ground for conversation. Plus, it's fun. In closeing, I can say that this game, while still in Beta. Is still off to one heck of a great start. Where else can you get behind the sticks of a World War I and II era tank, blow stuff up, have fun, not have to join the RL Army, and not get in trouble for it? Not many I can tell you that. Either way, it's fun, and it's addicting. Until next time!!

I'm really enjoying the game.  Based on the review, there are creating a persistent 'world' which may make it a bit more MMOish.

W.o.T. Still has to deal with Phatom Tanks and tanks that disappear when hit, but not destroyed.

On the Phatom Tank issue, it is most common to be hit by the enemy tanks without knowing where the round came from, only to have a tank show up within several meters from your dead tank, after the hit.

Disappearing tanks can be destroyed, if you shoot in the same area as they first were locate, being that they are still there, but you can't see them

great review and yes the game is all of that but i would like to add the bad parts of the game to be fair.

    1. sighting system- yes its borked right now, but being worked on. its not gamebreakingly borked but it does need some work.

    2.  maps- some maps just arent fun, malinovka is one, pagorki is the other, both can usually be determined by looking at the starting teams.  plus the maps arent big enough which doesnt allow the germans to use their advantages of being sniper tanks to their full capability because if the germans can shoot at a enemy most likely that enemy can see and shoot back at them.

    3.  matchmaking system-  currently it is not all that fair and has some problems but once again being worked on. biggest complaint i have is putting several t54 tanks on one team while other team has none, that needs to change because one or two t54 tanks arent that bad, 5 or 6 and you might as well quit game and que for another one in a different tank.

all in all the game is incredibly fun, i play it every night and plan on buying a sub for it when it comes out, there are certainly worse games people do spend money on.
