I'll prob be staying far away from earthrise on the sole fact they releasing it WAY to soon with very little beta testing. That already has set a red flag and warning bells. I would ask: Is it something that is actually trying to be unique at all? or another quest driven piece of crap like DCUO and WoW. I really liked the combat in Tabula Rasa for example is the combat anything like that?
"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words." -Poster on mmorpg.com
Rift: World of Warcraft clone #9321 Nothing special to see here move along.
Will or would you buy this game...? But in the spirit of the thread I suppose I would ask ..
1. How large is the map?
2. How many slots are available to insure items?
3. How exactly do the secuity boundries work? ( Hi Sec- Low Sec )
4. If my guild builds a fortress, when can it be attacked?
5. Can I fish??
I've been following this game for quite some time now, I suppose the real question would be, " Have they implemented what they said would be in-game"?
Yes, I would buy this game if I could afford the time investment. I would also expect a bumpy ride on release.
1.Huge. There is a ton of ground to cover from one side of the map to the other as well as quite a mix of varying landscape, environmental and manmade features. This is all still on one server and a seamless world.
2.You can insure all your gear and everything in your inventory. The first insurance slot insures most of your equipped gear (armor, equipped weapon and 1 equipped device) and it costs 600 credits. You can then purchase insurance slots for your inventory with the first one starting at 200 credits and each one increasing exponentionally. So, 200, 400, 800. When you die you will drop all uninsured items and lose 1 insurance slot that you will either have to repurchase or drop that item on your next death as loot. If you have insurance and are killed by another player, they get a payout based upon how many insurance slots you have. Currently it is 50% of the other players last insurance slot cost. So if they had their last slot worth 800 credits you recieve 400 credits for killing them. Insurane can be purchased directly from your inventory window and do not require any terminal or location. Credits are automatically deducted. Credits are also not carried as items so they do not drop on death, instead they are stored in a all-access bank account that you have access to anywhere (just the credits, not items). You do not lose credits for dying, you only lose credits if you wish to reinsure the slot you lost.
3.They are very basic right now. Unknown if there are plans to make this more detailed. As it stands currently High-Sec is called a demilitarized zone in game and its an area where going into battle mode isn't possible. These are limited to the major cities and certain hubs. Sal Vitas (Continoma capitol), the Core (Noir HQ). In certain areas, outside the respective capitols or friendly organization (aligned with one side) areas there are faction guards. These guards won't protect you if you are getting attacked (but I understand its in the works), but they will aggro enemies (opposite faction) and supposedly criminals (haven't tested this). I suppose this would be mid-sec. Only the most basic crafting stations are available here. Other areas there are no guards which would basically be the low-sec areas. The better crafting stations are located throughout several areas, some guarded by mobs others relatively isolated from them. From what it looks like even in these low-sec areas and not in the presence of faction guards you still recieve factions hits and criminal points for killing same faction or neutrals. It is speculated that there are no faction hits in the concession grounds (guild siege areas that are not implemented yet). There are also no notifications of what the security level of the zone you are in unless you are in a DMZ where you cant draw your weapon.
4.Not in game yet. Previous information showed them wanting to have a time frame for sieges, not vulnerable all the time. You can check the roadmap thread for information on when you can expect to see this.
5. No. Not even sure if its in the works. According to the roadmap they are planning on adding salvage heaps in remote areas where players can scavenge for parts used in crafts. That would be the closest thing to fishing right now.
Is the combat really as bad as it looks in the videos? How close to FPS is it rather than auto target, point click shit.
Yes and no. You can obviously make the combat that uninteresting by just standing still and shooting each other. Then it's just basically who can soak the most damage. You can also make the combat more interesting. Basic shooting and the majority of abilities can be accomplished on the move with most weapons. For most situation the only reason to stand still is that it makes targeting your enemy easier. In the last build they also improved running speed in battle mode which made a nice improvement to mobility. You can switch weapons while in combat as well with minimal delay. Every ranged weapon has a range modifier that provides different damage potential at different ranges. For example, precision rifle - can allow for 100% damage at 40m, at 20m it drops to 70% and at 3m it drops to 30%. You can also melee strike with the butt of your weapon in close combat with signifigant damage reduction. It would be better to switch to a short range or melee weapon in this scenario if you have it.
Its neither FPS or auto target.
Its manual aim in third person. Unless you keep your aiming reticule on your targets hitbox you wont hit it, unless you are using aoe weapons or devices. You can use mouse lock mode which makes your targeting reticule follow your mouse which makes it feel similar to an FPS or you can use unlocked mouse for free-aim targeting.
Currently, most of the damage you dish out is from your weapons primary attack (white damage) although the developers have recognized this and plan to increase ability effectiveness to make them more useful.
Yes combat is a work in progress, and basic and exploitable AI makes it feel alot less fun in PvE. It can be more exciting in PvP but it might just be something you have to try to see if you like it, and if its not where you would like it then wait on it.
