That's a link to some ingame combat footage from Tera.
Now, I only want to point out one thing that brought me to post this thread.
Is anyone else growing tired of the fantasy dynamic of huge monster being taken down by small creatures (humans) because they swung axes and swords at their feet? I mean, mobs just standing there, taking a beating that is coming from someone smaller than their left foot?
This started bothering me when I became bitter and jaded from WoW and it's raiding/gear treadmill. After raiding the same stuff over and over again, I kind of stopped paying attention to the glitter and glitz of the instances and and started seeing it all for the simplistic minigame gimic that it was underneath the scripted voice overs and the bright lights of paladin buffs.
I can't explain why it bothers me that a 50 foot dragon would stand there and let 20 tiny people gather around it's toes and swing at it's ankles and shoot fireballs at it's elbows until it dies. Maybe it bothers me because if I were a dragon, I would have taken 3 steps in a circle and crushed everyone into red stains, and gone back to my peaceful sleep, waiting for a real challenge. Or maybe I'd just exhale and ignite everything in the lair. Either way, i just think it's complete nonsense that these "next gen" boasting titles are still doing the same thing; having monsters and dragons and demigods stand there, waiting to die whilst your group of tiny humans swings at their feet.
Ever played Shadow of the Colossus? That game has what we should be seeing in our MMO's at this point. Heroes running up the monsters back, swinging from their ears, planing deadly blows into their eye sockets, or into their throat... sliding down their arms... jumping off and trying to catch themselvs on another limb before falling to their death... and such.
What would be cooler; more next gen:, 1) a party where the tank draws the attention of the beast while the melee dps climbs it's back and looks for weak points, all while the magic users stand back casting spells at the beast to lower it's movement ability and reducing it's strength/resistance OR 2) another game/expansion where people stand around in a circle, spamming 1, 2, 3 until a message appears saying something like "everyone run away from the fire and come back. DPS AGAIN for 30 sec until the next scripted aoe happens"

the combat looks different and that sounds good to me.
a monster hunter MMO in english would be sweet, but this game looks like the combat is pretty close. MH you really get punished for making mistakes though.
die.
I don't think I quite understood your reply.
What do you mean MH? and what punishment do you speak of for making mistakes? or do you just mean 'if you don't stand at their feet and swing enough, you'll die'? and what looks different about the combat?
If I missed something, I'm all open for enlightenment buddy.

Usually these large monsters have no sense of weight, either. In WoW, massive dragons will spin around at the speed of light to switch targets, magically spinning on an invisible axis that runs vertically down the center of their bodies.
It's not game ruining or anything, but kind of annoying. I'd like to see a big monster that actually feels like it has some weight and heft to it in an MMO.
None-the-less, while I do agree with the OP somewhat, TERA looks pretty awesome regardless.
I believe MH means Monster Hunter.
The punishment for making mistakes is when the "Monster" shows a particular action as it is about to attack, you are able to side-step/move out of the way to avoid damage.
Active combat and movement mechanics like that are a cool feature, indeed. ANd I do think Tera looks pretty cool in general with rich environment graphics and lighting. I don't like the character models or animations that much, but at least something a little different is better than no different or nothing at all. I was generally speaking more about offensive combat mechanics, in Tera and most fantasy MMOs that I've played. and i've played a lot, unfortunately lol

MH= Monster Hunter. If you havent played this game you should. Some monster maybe twice the size of a human dont put up much of a fight but others (large) will swipe you with their claws sending you flying back or rolling to the ground. Some will charge you to your death. Some bosses (Lao Shan Lung and Jhen Mohran) you can climg on their back and hit vital weak points and break plates off of their backs to open up weak points. You can cut off tail ends and horns and break off breast plates on some larger monsters. If you have bad timing or aim you will be left vulerable to an attack or tail swipe. Really you should watch some videos its a great game
sounds pretty delicious. I will have to look a little harder for those vids, 'cause the ones I've seen were far lacking in comparison to your description. THanks ^^

There are almost as many Monster Hunter games as there are Final Fantasy games. Not all of them will be the same.
Sup.
A good example can be found in this stream of a Berserker fighting a lvl39 Elite. He fights it a few times.
Que it up to 0:15:45 http://www.justin.tv/naup/b/278234308
A few things I noticed in the stream that other people have posted about here:
http://www.terafans.com/topic/7125-damage-mechanics/page__pid__43777__st__0&#entry43777
Archers are also noticing that RNG seems to have been replaced with a meters to target (MTT) + moster hitpoints (MHP) system, but this one is still debatable and mystic's seem to not share in this type of mechanic.
{post that talks about archers damage and how it relates to range & mobs health}:

You are probably looking for CGI quality combat.
Check back in 10 years.
LMAO
If you only want to play MMOs then yes, most single player and small scale multiplayer games do not use the trinity system and therefore you have to use tactics and run away from shit or trigger certain events that actually would have the power to hurt a giant dwagon.
Let me stop you right there. No combat with a tank in will be next gen.
The first generation of MMO combat is the holy triad. No amount of tweaking, collision detection or whatever is the least nextgen, the holy triad combat is more or less the same as it was in Meridian 59 when it released in January 96. The more action styled version AoC and TERA ties still have the same basics.
I am very doubtful that any game in 2011 will have next gen combat and if any do have it will be Guildwars 2. It at least have different basis, like no triad and active dodge, parry. And combat moveability and it is the closest to nextgen we see this year.
Mixing TERAs combat with GW2s however could actually lead to a true nextgen combat.
That doesn't mean TERAs combat can't be fun, it looks pretty fun to me.
Watching a beta video on youtube made me wonder..
There really should be special hit boxes on bosses and other big elite mobs. Like aiming their eyes, spine, or that soft spot on their belly. Shouldn't be too hard to code and would add lots of excitement on said fight.
I'd definately like to see Vindictus combat in a larger setting than is presented in Vindictus. Though it's not perfect realism. It's better than WoW/EQ type fighting. I like that there is a trinity in Vindictus, but everyone can ignore it for player skill.
add: Atleast for me in Vindictus there's probably an "oh SHIT!" moment about every other day. Learning a boss so you don't get one or two shotted because you didn't dodge at the right time is rather thilling vs, learning where to stand and shoot so you don't die in standard WoW fair.
