I know within the first few days if i am going to play the game for long. I had come from a line of MMO's before WoW and was int he EQ2 beta, before a SWG guildie let me into WoW closed beta. The game felt alive and so much fun. I asked an EQ2 guildie to post me over a copy from USA when it was released (several months before UK).
Man, it was laggy and buggy, servers always down and you had to queue for upto an hour just to play. But i would play well into the early hours, skip Uni classes to play and set my alarm clock for 5am in the morning, pour some coffee and play 14hr stints of it.
That lasted for months from day one and no other game did that for me before or after, even SWG not to that extreme. So, there is no "see how it goes in couple of months" for me, i know straight away; from how you do combat, how you move, what you do, how you look and how the world feels. Does it feel like you're living an adventure in a new world? You know this after the first day and if you don't feel a panicking urge to play again the next day, that probably won't change months down the line.
So, i think i will try this out, because the world looks beautiful/open and thats very very important to me to get engrossed in the world.

Not only that but the game actually has you running across the zone to fight invasions and close rifts which can't be said for all the other mmo's created. Once you'd finished the quests in an area you'd never look back.

no there not. You will not be going back to the starting area to close a lvl 8 rift when your lvl 51.
To be honest rifts should be rare. I am running around them now becuase there just a pain now there so frequent. I just want to get on with my quest but I have 3 rifts in my way and when I am done with my quest to turn it in theres 3 more on the way back,
I really hope they have upped the frequenccy for the beta only.
These are nothing more then the PQ of warhammer. except there somewhat random. They always appear in the same place but at random times. like evey 30 seconds.
Yes, the game IS addictive and I have time to write about it before going to bed (really, really late).
The quests are about as varied as you can expect in an MMO and provide a good foundation to level on and get gear. However, when the map starts to get active with rift activity, tackling Rifts is fun, fast paced, rewarding and addictive. You may not want to spend the entire game doing it, but it's a great feature, very well implimented. (I like that healers gain contribution for healing, that you are prompted into a Public Group upon arriving and that you get full credit for damage and healing even outside your group).
It's not all perfect. Very early impressions of crafting is that there isn't uch innovative there and it probably needs to be more fleshed out. The first city, Sanctum, was very underwhelming, etc... however, it's looking good and a very pleasant surprise overall.
One note, the game is more old school on some features. Not much in the way of quick transport and the aggro radius of mons is fairly big. (Big contrast on the latter versus current WoW, which makes traveling through groups of mobs on the map a little too easy).
I'm having trouble pigeon holing the game, but I think that's a good thing. People really should try it and see if it fits their own personal play style, because it doesn't seem to be a title that is easy to generalize about.
I dont want to piss on your chips but what you say here is completly un-true.
I've been beta testing MMO's for almost 7 years now, and never.. not once, in the entire history of beta testing do game's get this 'clear coat of polish' that you go on about here.
Its a myth, a lie.. has never happened nor will ever happen. A month, even two months before a games release is server testing, most bug fixing will be related to networking, latency, optimisation and any problems that may occur from that.
The time for making game changes pre-release are gone! there wont be any more polish and the game will be nearly identical.... release usually means things get worse, never better. Never, its impossible.
Every single time people say this and every single time it turns out to be untrue, there is never an exception.
This.
If there is something you don't like about RIFT and are waiting for magical fairy launch day to "polish it" and "fix it" don't bother.
i wonder if anyone that puts up a review if that is actually there job, if it isnt why would anyone care what the review is or was.
i actually liked this one though cause it was objective so good job at least you didnt say its just like wow, that seems to be everyone other reviewers opinion on this site. i really like the class system, that was the selling point for me and i havent been dissapointed, im finally playing a cleric that dont heal and isnt expected to be a healer, matter of fact my cleric is more of a tank that can do some minor healing to keep himself alive, i love it. the rifts im up in the air about, they are a lot of fun to do in a group, but when im soloing they are annoying cause they get in the way, they need to be a little bit less frequent i guess, which i dont know if trion made them spawn more because of beta or if they spawn more often because of so many people in the area, i know the game engine makes the mobs respawn faster based on population in the area so that may be it but i would like to see them less frequent just so you can play the game and the quest line also. on the subject of the rifts they have to make them frequent enough that one or two isnt getting camped and its not a zerg where a thousand players are tackling one rift but i think its too frequent right now, or it might be because of the increased amount of players, hard to tell. for endgame i do want the dungeon raids and stuff but i also want rift raids, where you can go in the rift and go to another plane and fight a big boss over there and stuff like that. it probably will be a gear grind endgame, im fine with that and if you are not fine with that what are you doing playing games, every game is about the aquisition of new gear. old school pen and paper dnd was about getting better gear to go fight bigger and badder monsters, that is what gaming is all about, nobody wants to stay level 1 and have level 1 starter gear forever.
all in all, rift is the most fun ive had since wow and i think people need to just give it a try and see it for what it is and not judge it based on other games, i think most people would like it.
I'll try the beta after work tonight (by sounds of it, i assume there are plenty of keys about, like open?). I'll give it my 1am test. If i am still playing it past 1am and i say "sod it, i'll sleep at work", then i'll pre-order it on the spot. If i log off, feeling tired, drained, bored and no urge to play through the night...it won't see me again.
Regardless if it has me beating pandas to death with giant dildos, whilst strippers buff me with boob magic...if it has you bored or frustrated, it doesn't matter what it has or potential, it just won't be my thing.
Heh. Ok everyone needs to take a chill pill. Breath.
1. This is a beta review. Meaning is it worth your time to test it and see if you like it enough to play the main game. Based on my expereince with more games and game companies I wish to admit I've worked for lol.
2. That wall of text was right before bed after a 15 hour work day. And I was tired of seeing people try to review anything after 5 minutes.
3. I'm a very balanced character. Meaning I don't give my all in on anything. This game is just that. Its addicting and has done the same old thing we're use to doing in a semi new light. and I love me some options. But its not perfect. Duh. Its better then alot of games I've worked on. But its got its flaws like everything else and everyone here.
4. That clear coat of polish I'm talking about it when they switch out placer effects and sounds and the coders double check their sections. In the game industry there are there are group of people who will never talk to one another at times. Thats for their department leads to do. So while the animators are working on flushing out obvious details, coders are working on reducing code from the giant mess to a smaller semi less bug( yes doesn't always work) mass, all the while the sound guys are busy making sure everything is times right ect. Every game does this. I'll never say its perfect. But if you were to look at the beta code now and compare it to 3 weeks after release you'll notice its a very different beast. 900 lines of code reduced to 500 for space saving.
I'm a 3D Animator. I work in this industry. I've lost my job in this industry. And like a drug addicted whore I come back for more. lol. Rift could very well be the game that everyone who hates wow will like. Maybe. Maybe not. Only time will tell.
Rift is a OK MMO, but with only 3 weeks left before launch I don't expect much in terms of a different playing experience then what were getting now.
Biggest concerns about Rift:
1) Very limited Character Creation
2) Stiff Movement Animations, Lack of combat animations
3) Rifts are cool in the beginning but after 3 days of playing they are starting to feel gimmicky
4) With No Auto Approach when you attack something makes it very difficult to fight in huge battles where everyone is standing on top of each other.
5) Lack of Gear Models, everything looks the same
6) Quest's that are no different then the original EQ... No originality or humor or challenge which equals boring quest grindage
7) Soul Tree's have potential but can't help wonder how soon there will be just 1 ubber setup for each class making the rest of the skills in the soul trees useless.
The only two things that are unique to rift (Soul tree's and Rifts) are questionable for the long run.

ok fine, the game is awesome of awesomeness even though I have no clue what the end game is. Happy?

I agree with most of the OP review.

The things I've seen with souls is that its tied to play style more then 1 uber cookie cutter.
And what do you mean by limited character creation. Literally the avatar or the classes?
