It's with a bittersweet pen that MMORPG.com Community Manager Mike Bitton writes about the Guild Wars 2 class reveal of the Guardian. He had been sure of the Mesmer but admits that Guardians bring a lot to the party and maybe that's not such a bad thing. Check out Mike's thoughts about the Guardian and then add a few of your own in the comments section.
The title of this week’s Guild Wars 2 column is “Bittersweet”, so I’d be remiss to not talk about that today. Like many of you I am always eager to hear more about the game, and class reveals are some of the most exciting bits of information to have, but at the same time I was really looking forward to seeing the stylish Mesmer come to life this week and so it is all a bit bittersweet for me (boo hoo, I know). The moons seemed aligned for a Mesmer reveal, as it is pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point that the profession will be in the game, but I suppose we’ll have to wait until next time (I hope!) to see what she’s all about in Guild Wars 2.

I undertand the Mesmer disappointment! I mean look at my handle for this site!!
However, based on the lore information released by ANet and the books being produced Mesmer magic is alive and well! Mesmers will be here in some form or another so I am glad that they are introducing professions that are still a mystery!
Besides we have two of the three scholar professions revealed and had only one adventurer and one soldier; the other archetypes were overdue!

EDIT: In fact I hope that the Mesmer is the last reveal since it seems to be guaranteed, save the best for last after all! Gives me less distractions so that I can focus on my GW Mesmer!
Still waiting on the rogue/assassin/ranger class to be revealed and i think that one is next.
Good to see a paladin/monk/cleric class type rolled into one and i'm sure the guardian looks to be one on the favorite played classes.
Okay i'll admit i'm not following the game, so this is purely a question based on no facts. So here it goes.
did they say somewhere that the mesmer would be one of the classes or is this wishful/experienced guessing?
Granted it sounds like Mesmer was one of the classes in the original GW, but i'm not sure that is enough for such certainty. Unless like i said i missed somewhere that they said Mesmer would be one of them, just not when.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Why all the talk about the mesmer? personally I'd rather a sequel had a completly new array of classes. I'm glad a new one has been revealed.
Mesmer was never officially confirmed, but Arenanet left plenty of hints in books.
One of those hints was that one of the main characters in Ghosts of Ascalon, Caithe, listed three casters: elementalists, necromancers and mesmers. Also, the Queen of Kryta is clearly a mesmer, with her power to create illusions and dominate the minds of others.
We also have very mesmerish artwork.

In the newest Guild Wars novel, Edge of Destiny, it is revealed that Queen Jennah, who is the monarch of the humans of Tyria, is a Mesmer.
It is an illusionist class in Guild Wars (the originial game) but also a particular type of magic in the world (lore).
EDIT: Also, with its particular armour style and spells it is more novel than many of the other classes from Prophecies.
I feel you dude I'm trying to be positive, because it's news! A lot of effort and work went into it and I definitely appreciate that. But we all have our favorite classes. Mine is the meser I want to see its powers!

I´d guess if there is a Mesmer, then it will be revealed last - because Crowd Control is very hard to balance, only second to Stealth. Not sure if/how much of these mechanics will make it into the final game.

Also it wasn't just Queen Jennah, that Countess lady that was one of her friends and guardians was a Mesmer to. They tried to tag team rape the dragons mind but he went 'LOL! No.' and mentally bitch slapped them. Was a nice try, though!

Okay so two questions (as it's down to clues)
1. Would you still play if Mesmer (for whatever reason) wasn't a class? (probably a yes but i figured i'd ask)
and
2. A lot of people seem to be hanging on this Mesmer, do you think too many people will pick that class in lieu of another class.
Just two things i've been noticing, Mesmer seems to be a huge deal with quite a few people in the GW2 community that i've seen.

I covered the evidence in my previous article.
Going from the pattern of reveals, and the qoute from the devs saying that assassin lovers are "on the cards" in the eurogamer article, the next class will be an adventurer.
Tbh with you i am as much surprised as you are about this Mesmer craze. I think it's probably the least played primary class in Guild Wars 1.
I will answer your questions as how they affect me personally:
1. I will still likely pick up the game but it would not be a must-have launch game. I enjoy the Mesmer in Guild Wars but would still eventually like to see how the world has changed by setting the game 250 years later. Not providing a Mesmer or similar class in the game would be a sort of deal-breaker for me. I would still role an elementalist for instance because I like the idea of the attunement system but owning the game would become less important especially since I still have so much to do in GW1!
2. I am not too worried. Every class is supposed to be able to play the roles of damage, support and control so even if the whole group for a dungeon is composed of Mesmers it should be possible, though perhaps not as straight forward.
And yeah, I think you are right, "Mesmer seems to be a huge deal [...]"!

It's not. Mesmer primaries are the only ones who get access to Fast Casting, making them exceptional as /mo, /ele, etc. They are also extremely popular as Heroes, because the game's AI can interrupt better than most players can. In PvP, a (good) Mesmer is sought after for energy denial and hexes that can lay the smackdown on a healer. Some monk builds are powerful enough to go toe-to-toe versus dps'ers, but they can't do anything if they can't cast their spells (That's where Mesmers come into play). You may not see them often during your PvE travels, because you need skill to play this class, and too many people playing Mesmers just plain don't have it. It gives Mesmers a bad name, and people stop wanting them in their teams. But a good Mesmer can save your ass better than a good Monk. My fondest memory of GW1 is having to finish Lich on my own at the end of Prophecies when the rest of the team died. Still had a good half his health, but running in circles and going anti-caster on him won the day. Let's not even bring up the influx of Mesmer/Assassin builds all over the place in PvP >_<
Anyway:
1) Yes, I would still play. Flannum already said everyone will have a home in GW2, meaning even if the Mesmer doesn't exist in name, it will exist in some form or another, just as the Guardian is meant to appeal to those who played Monk/Paragon. There's far too much inclusion of the Mesmer in the story so far to say they won't be in GW2, though. If they didn't want them there, it would make more sense not to include them in the story, just as Monks have yet to be mentioned in the books.
2) Mesmers are clearly a loved class, but despite that, GW1 certainly wasn't dominated by Mesmers. I doubt GW2 would, either.

Something which may be interesting to most of you (orange text is link): "JP: We're working on professions, and everyone else is working on finishing the game. That's basically all we can say. We're working on everything and trying to make it all as good as it can be."
Don't worry the mesmer is coming, lets just enjoy the Guardian today.
Many (myself included) consider the Mesmer to be *the* signature class of Guild Wars. It's why there's always so much talk about it in GW2 since there's been nothing definitive to state that they'll be making a re-appearance. It also accounts for the lamentations from those of us waiting for confirmation.
Everyone has a class that they most identify with. I think it's just that those of us who identify with Mesmer tend to be more neurotically attached to our personal choice than everyone else. It would literally be heartbreaking for Mesmers not to be included in the sequel.
For some, it's la vie en rose or nothing.
Not sure where all this love for mesmers has come from as NOONE in my 1000 player allance or any of the 00's of people i know in GW1 plays one or even likes then. I can't talk about pvp as I don't play it but I have'nt seen one in pve for years. Anything it can do can be done by other classes and they can do more as well.
Another thing ALL the class that are left to be revealed are either NEW or changed so that means NO mesmer class as its an original and we all ready know what the 4 original ones are all ready

Worst 2 wow and Lotro Under standing stones it went woke
You can't talk about pvp but that's exactly the place where the Mesmer shines. The Mesmer is a counter class, using your actions against you, preventing those actions from happening in the first place etc and this is a less quick way to deal with mobs, especially large amounts of mobs so that's why the Elementalist and Minion Masters were much more populair for that. In PvP (real PvP that is, not RA or that Factions PvP crap) it's not just about damage but also about control, about preventing Monks from healing and protting, preventing Warriors from KD'ing your own Monk etc.
About your second comment on the impossibility of the Mesmer returning that's just wrong. After Anet released the Necromancer they released the following message on twitter:
Remaining four professions: at least one is a returning profession, at least one is similar with a different name, and at least one is new. http://twitter.com/guildwars2/status/26864709145
The Guardian is imo definetely a 'new' profession so that still leaves at least one returning (Mesmer imo) and at least one that is similar but with a different name (Assassin imo).
A case could also be made that the Guardian is the return of the Monk, which is similar but with a different name. Afterall, the Aegis skill is a Prot Monk staple.
And as for Mesmers being non-existent in GW today, it's patently false. They've always been more niche than other classes due to requiring such a high level of finesse to play properly, but they are there. Having trouble identifying them? Look for the sexy masks and stylish wardrobes. It's hard to miss them unless you're trying to miss them -- for whatever reason.
PVP is where the Mesmer excells. I can see what you are saying for PVE but there are some places that a good mesmer is so valuable. Places like DoA and Underworld are so much better with Mesmer. A Panic mesmer can really eliminate a lof of the incoming damage to a party.
