Toss this game in with Eve, Ryzom and Perpetuum as those games also represent quality sandbox games in our genre.
Earthrise is a fun little sandbox. While its kind of basic right now the game will be much better a couple months after release as the territorial mechanic drops.
Combat is its weak point however, so if your looking for CoD:BO type skill shooter combat look elsewhere.
Graphics are very good and i was able to test the game on a crap machine.
Crafting is solid, the world feels alive.
I give the game two thumbs up and as a sandbox fan i appreciate that the developers released a solid sandbox game.
Give the beta a shot or wait for a trial before trying but dont be surprised if the game grabs hold of you and doesnt let go.
This game gets rockgods sandbox seal of approval... check it out.

i would hope asap but no im not sure
I've been paying close attention to this game, especially lately now that the NDA is lifted. I've read mixed opinions, but I think that Earthrise is really a niche mmo and I love sandbox style mmos, so I feel like I have to try it at least. I hope it grabs me, because it does look pretty awesome, and I can see the potential in time, when the real PvP kicks in.
(In case anyone is interested in a roleplay/PvP guild for Earthrise, contact me or head on over to the Earthrise Forums and post at the Guild Forum under Iron Horde H.C.)
sandbox to me is a game that offers other things to do besides combat. like swg for example, i could be a chef an architect, gather resources, be a town mayor, be a dancer, a muscian and create a band, sell goods from my house to other players, build ships, speeders, be a bounty hunt and hunter player jedi, be a doctor and heal players wounds, an image designer. droid engineer, creature handler, create my own pets, grow them and sell them, find rare resources.
What about this game is sandbox in its current state? This question is coming from someone who is and was a beta tester before the mass invites recently.

Which is actually better that way, as opposed to a total and complete sandbox. Look at SWG pre-cu. An MMORPG that offers both is much better than one or the other.
so you are basically saying this is a sci-fi darkfall?
A sandbox without sand is just a box. It is imperative that a sandbox has a whole host of well designed systems and subsystems to keep the players entertained. From what I am hearing (haven't managed to snag a key yet) Earthrise has some considerable way to go yet. Lets hope they get there sooner rather than later.
All I wish for is I could try it before spending 50 euros on it...
More like EVE with human avatars imo. ----> the faction system, the territory control, the loot with insurance, the range v. optimal range combat.
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
They aren't quests.. they are missions. Essentially, a lot of what you kill drop crafting parts and a quest item, + vendor junk and sometimes gear. Those quest items can then be turned in to the appropriate mission guy, while staying on you even if you die. As you'll lose all of your inv when you die except for quest stuff, you'll always have these quest items to turn in for cash.. so in other words your death is not a total loss, and you can use the cash to buy new gear.
So for instance I grind robots for their pumps for a few hours, have a nice big fat inventory of misc stuff.. then get ganked and lose all my fancy gear and loot.. So I take these 50 pumps and "sell" them to the mission npc, get some cash, and I'm back up and running (somewhat). Think of the mission dudes as a kind of vendor for specific vendor trash types. Extra insurance against bankruptcy
Crafting takes tons of materials, which are acquired by hunting (or killing hunters for their loots).. Someone has to collect that stuff.
Think of Earthrise as Tabula Rasa's look/style and relatively similar combat mechanics, mixed with Entropia's pathless open world when you just do your thing, not what some quest tells you to do. (Same as in Ryzom really). Each time you leave the safetly of an outpost and head into the wilds, it's an adventure waiting to happen heh.
Darkfall's play is essentially: grind your skills, go fight players
Earthrise's grind gets you crafting items, so it's more like you get skill while farming for the crafters. Plus ER's world is very much more awesome than DF lol.. wandering around, you find all sorts of interesting ambush potentials and strategic spots, and hidden routes. DF was more or less flat with trees and rock formations here and there. Not ER.
The world in ER is awesome but so is Darkfalls. I have no idea how you could say Darkfall's map is more or less flat . Its not even close. Remind you this is coming from a former longtime darkfall player and a current beta tester in ER. Darkfall you collect materials for crafters and trash Items the same way you do in ER.
You can craft , grind mobs for BP to buy skills, or engage in world pvp. The game is releasing without its main features. Ive been following earthrise for quite some time and I never thought I would be questioning playing at release. Well now after beta its a slim chance unless some sort of miracle patch is released before hand.
The Devs are great and quick to respond to the communities concerns on the forums, but we can't let that kindness blind us to reality. They have failed to deliver substanial updates to the beta even a month before release. I hope they meet all the goals on there roadmap, but if its anything like the beta updates then its not going to happen. Sorry for the negativity but its the truth.
"Darkfall's play is essentially: grind your skills, go fight players"
And what do you think Earthrise is?
"Earthrise's grind gets you crafting items, so it's more like you get skill while farming for the crafters"
I don't know exactly how this differs from Darkfall. In both games, you do this.
"Plus ER's world is very much more awesome than DF lol.. wandering around, you find all sorts of interesting ambush potentials and strategic spots, and hidden routes"
This statement couldn't be further from the truth. There are virutally ZERO ambush spots. You can see people coming from a mile away, the world is mostly open terrain, and a huge section of the world is designed as a corridor. Also, there is no crouch feature. Also, there is very little to hide behind. Also, you can't run through most bushes in the game, so no chance of hiding in a bush. I could go on... As for hidden routes, they don't exist unless you're talking about the Core?
"DF was more or less flat with trees and rock formations here and there. Not ER."
The exact opposite is true. There are constant undulations in the terrain in Darkfall. Hills and mountains are everywhere as are rocks and trees. Not so in Earthrise. Flat ground leads to shallow slopes that take you to higher elevations of flat ground. If you consider Darkfall to have "rock formations here and there" then Earthrise has non of these.
Heh, you haven't played the game, have you?
To the poster above me, well said. I too have been following this game for a long time and never thought that I wouldn't purchase it at release. Now, I'm not so sure.
Hopefully they'll implement some form of player housing, player cities/settlements, and lots of other fluff features at some point, as too me, a sandbox is more than just a grindfest that lets you have great control over your character progression.
I think some people have been experiencing a different part of the ER world as I have.. where I've been, it's not flat, and there are tons of nooks and crannies to ambush out of heh...
I suppose the same can be said about me and DF though.
By hidden paths, I mean paths that you cant see from a distance, unless you stumble on just the right spot and oh look, a path there..
Hehehe, yeah it's not as bad as I made it sound. I think there is just a lot more potential in Darkfall to ambush someone. Regardless, I really do love the ambience of Earthrise. Pop HDR on and the game world looks beautiful, especially the backdrops.
