Maybe if this wan't an mmo...

You know... I've been playing in a few of the Rift betas with and without my wife who got in as well (she just doesn't play as much) and I have a weird feeling about this game.  I like it, I do, however, it does feel like a glorified version of a different game.  I'm not going to go into how it's so like game x, y, or z because it doesn't really remind me of another mmo.  It has a lot of the same features, but does them somewhat differently.

Personaly, this feels like Dungeon Seige with way more people running around with me.  In all honesty, if this were a single player game with the option to have someone join you via lan or over the internet, I would buy this game in a heart beat.  I think my only true gripe about this game is the mmo aspect.  I love mmo's, but this one just seems like it would make a more awesome single/few player coop game better than it does a massively one.

Can anyone else relate to that notion?

Have you even played this game????  It's all about playing with other people.  If it was single player than how would the main selling point of this game work?

This is more MMO than most games.

Lol, didn't you read the bit where he states "ive been playing in a few rift betas" i would guess he has played the game. I have played the game in all 5 betas and as much as i try and go back to see if i am missing something i can't see it.

It's MMO alright but it really should be FTP,it has that ROM feel.

Not worth the monthly sub IMO.

I have the opposite feeling, it is fine as a MMO but I wouldn't play it at all as a single player game. I have a lot harder requirement of the story for a single player game.

Of course I thought dungeon siege sucked so that might be the problem. :)

I feel Rift brings multiplayer, grouping and all social aspects to the next level and definitely raises the bar for past and future mmos. Name one other mmo that automatically groups players in a specific location. Rift also merges parties into raids. Grouping is just so easy. I am not talking about the public quests either. I am talking about Rifts auto grouping mechanics which no other mmo past or present offers.

Have you even read my post????  Yes I've played it.  I'm just saying that I think that it would make a better single player game with some npc party mechanics or some buds over the lan.  $15 a month for a game that feels like a single player game doesn't seem right to me.  UO and WoW and other nameless mmo's I've played didn't feel like that to me, but this one does.

Obviously they would rework the rifts for a single player game, but they could still keep the ideas of the rifts invading the world.  Maybe there would be some form of purge and build a defence mechanic that would stop them from spawning when you have finished helping an area out.

I haven't put  years of thought into how to rework this mmo into just an rpg for just a few people, but it came off to me as I would probably have more fun if that was the case.

I did but i didn't believe him. Some people make posts and some people make posts that are completely untrue. How anybody could say that rift has a single player feel to it, is beyond me, and makes me question the authentitiy of their claims.

As far as the mmo aspect of grouping in Rift goes I do love it compared to other games with the super ease of joining up with others to help with rifts.  Then turning parties into raids and so on.  Very easy and made getting rid of the rifts a lot easier since the first betas with people continueously asking for invites into rift raids or groups of people just standing around not knowing how to create a raid.  That button at the top of the screen was pretty smart for how simple it is lol.

WOW feels more single player than rift.... Rift is all about groups and players around you making a difference in the game. WoW is about you doing quests over and over again all day and going to battle grounds while you sit in origrammer.

Not really, i´m with sungodra here, this is more of an "mmo" than most games these days.

Sure, if you ignore rifts, dungeons, pvp and group quests you can solo thru the game to experience the story (if nothing changes from 30-50). But that´s possible in most mmo´s.

I don´t get the Dungeon Siege comparison and i have played that game several times even though it wasn´t that good ;)

Yes, that was a good idea.  My fear would have been that stuck up guilds wouldn't let you join their raid... but the devs made a smart move by allowing you to click the button to join.

Lol, I'm starting to feel like I'm the only one that like Dungeon Seige.  Either way, I just wanted to be clear that I do respect this game and if I wasn't planing on playing Tera later this year I would jump on the band wagon.  So before anyone jumps to the conclussion that I hated it, I don't.  I can see this game having a really strong player base and continueing for a while.

I supposed I could see the single player thing, but you could really say that about any mmorpg. After all, the whole mmorpg thing was built on the single player rpg thing, which was built on the whole rpg thing. I can honestly say the thought never occurred to me. If it were a single player game, I probably wouldn't look twice at it. Single player RPG with all the stats and gear is just super boring (imo).

I don't think the game would do nearly as well as a single player game though. You could have a much more dynamic world and such, but there's something about knowing the other avatars around you are people and not computer generated AI that makes it better.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

It wasn't that it made me feel like it was a single player game, it's definitely an mmo, just pondering the possibility of this being a single player game I guess...

RIFT is MMOlite like the modern trend says it should be.

I'd play it if it were F2P because of it's lack of Massiveness, but really it doesn't have even the content or story depth or game play depth of any of the Fallout games or even JRPGs like Chrono Trigger.

It's fine where it is I guess. There's a market for mindless grind.

Will develop an original MMORPG title for money.
  • nuififunnuififun Member Posts: 123

why is it not a full mmo? why do you consider it mmo lite? it seems to have all the features of major mmo releases that ive played in the last 5 years..

    I dont understand your thinking.

Your right in the ability to form groups/raids is easier for the rifts, however I found it didn't promote more socializing. In the 5 or 6 rifts I did this week , No one chatted. I tried to form groups and no one was interested. maybe it was just because it was beta. But I can see this being a norm. You click a button for rifts to group/raid them, then as soon as the event is done. Everyone goes there own seperate way.

Maybe at higher levels, ( I only got to 23) The rifts will need more coordination. But the lower level ones were pretty much just a bunch of people grouped but still doing their own thing.

  • nuififunnuififun Member Posts: 123

yeah the amount of chat in public groups and raids was very small.. but whats to be said? I mean theres gunna be 0 tactics so no point there.. if theres no tank nobody cares if theres no healer nobody cares... so whats left to talk about.. you just kinda get on with it.

This is sadly normal for most MMO´s lately , very few people want to chat , the ones who chat sometimes just spew rubbishe.

It takes a while for people to be friendly to one and other , dont forget socialising is not easy .

Look at most post around on this site , most are just oneliners idiotic posts or picture says more then thousand words cliche  .

It does reflect society itself , so back to the OP .

The truth is , this is one of the MMO I really had a feeling it would be MORE fun , if you had a partner or group .

While on others i feel solo is more fun then grouping .

As a dungeon siege player who witness how huge it was back at the start , with people from ALL over the world in ONE chat room .

Woot I never ever had that feeling anyplace , so fine people talking Indishe , Chinese , Russian and any other wierd language.

Still most were back then polite , infact it was the english speakers feeling dumb , and then gotten there asses wooped in hacking contests , that they seperated the regions .

But honestly RIFT is as MMO as it can get .
