Shadowbane ruled the Earth. Dawntide is a long way off, if it takes off, period. Honestly, I would like to see a Shadowbane II. In no other game I witnessed, could you build a little shop or tower wherever the hell you wanted provided you protected and paid for it. These new attempts a la Age of Conan with prescribed "keep" / player town zones and prescribed configurations, i.e., modules added, player towns are a dumb-ass joke. In the original Shadowbane, some guilds actually sought out members and retained these "town architects" who knew what they were doing and could nicely design the outer or double-outer walls, properly place the armory, general store, etc. Way hell of a far cry from "construct here: add player crafting module here..."
Newish games Haven and Hearth, DFO (its crappy), EvE, MO, Dawntide (I think)
Old games: UO, SWG, VG, AoC (cities)
Good list. Add in Puzzle Pirates, Saga and PotBS
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
And CoH. They are instanced so may not be what you are looking for. But you can completely design how you want them to look, put this room here or there, that machine, storage, decoration almost unlimited, size...
Venge
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.
Xsyon, every structure is player built-player owned, early access starts in like 2 weeks, launch date is 1st of March. If you preorder it now you can take part in the ongoing beta (for 2 more weeks).
Looking for a game like sb where the freeform layout decisions mattered and the best gear in game was made by nods in highly upgraded player built towns meant defending them was urgently critical.

That's what I was thinking when I was reading this thread, there is really no question which mmo has the best house building system. You can't just build houses you can design them however you want.
darkfall as 'easy' instant travel now making terrority control not really that attractivve. Having said that its entirely possible to do both but they do not seem to be that intrested and I think its because the community overall is not that intrested in the conquest part of the game.
Debates happen often on this subject of fast travel. Yes it gives terrority meaning if you remove fast travel but you also have players who will spend 6months to a year never leaving their region which would be sad, Agon has some intresting places to go if you can get away from your cities for awhile
People are speculating that AV is going to make the map slightly smaller.

Is it any good? Last time I looked at it the combat was completely fail. Then again, that was like 3 months ago.
I really miss virtual world type mmo's with player structures like cities and bases that could be destroyed in pvp. Im guessing most of these people who claim they dont work well in newer mmos has soemthing to do with the games they started with. I miss being dumbfounded by the amount of ''learnign the world'' older virtual world mmos had. Now a days it seems most people want glorified single player rpgs with other people in them.

I agree
however I think there are multiple reasons most of which is around a growing gaming population of which as a whole are not as highly imaginative as the core gamers back in the day. That said, people today demand high end graphics and that does suck up a great deal of the budget making flexiablity of the game itself more costly to implement.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Yes, its pretty good. Actually seems it will fill my MMO need. Some more polish would be nice, but it doesn't bother me too much.
They are revising combat right now, they've found a bug in the aiming system I think which made the combat feel/look clunky. But since you can have fun in the game for weeks without swinging your sword even once thats not a problem for me, I was looking for a game which wasn't purely combat-oriented but offered a more diverse gameplay.
If combat is your main interest in a game I'd suggest you to wait for launch and see (I mean on youtube videos) if you like it. If you like to build/craft/socialize and to build a new world then don't hesitate, jump in right now. But don't expect anything like Darkfall, the game is not PvP oriented.

A game with world build but without meaningful territory control, as in territory that can be taken by others, is not a world building game I'm intrested in. With that kind of system, first come first serve get the best spots and you have to wait for atrophy/decay to claim it yourself. I understand that Xysom is supposed to have the type of territory control I want, but the combat has to be engaging as well. I just can't go back to MMOs with auto attack.
Well I dont really like EVE, but the first thing anyone will tell you when you go into EVE with any hopes of getting a POS is that they are all taken, then you have the "dream" of WH space which is just a carrot on a stick for any new player unless you are really deep into a good corp its not gonna happen.
As I see POS they are first come first served structures which rarely change hands, they are also borderline player built, certainly not like UO player built houses, you have a slot and you put your stuff in there so it is ok, I believe less sparse player controlled buildings that are already there do stimulate a lot more conflict, hence my example of L2 where you had 6-7 castles for 3k people and a couple of fortresses.
That to me is the way to go, it adds more to the server community as you get to know who is in charge and how they interact with everyone else.
And again have not seen a politics system as good as L2 yet in any new MMO but still hoping.

Yup, if you are interested in games where you can take over others' territory then Xsyon is not for you. I'm personally very happy to finally find a game where players can't ruin my hard work and I ( with my tribe) can build wihtout being worried about others. The world of Xsyon is huge and will expand by time so its not like you can't find a proper spot. If one is taken you can find just as good one at another spot.
I'm not sure why you mentioned auto-attack, Xsyon combat is twitched based with manual aiming. Auto attack is out of question.
