How hard would it be to have the mount run from off the screen/over the horizon/draw distance?
Most games have a "cast timer" for summoning mounts anyway, why not just have a visual timer instead of a magically appearing horse.
If I can conjure a horse from thin air, why then, cant I conjure the most epic weapon ever?
Comments
I'd conjure a harem. Just saying ...
Why not just have the mount stay where you left it? It worked for FE...
anyway, Age of Conan has the mount spawning a few meters away from you and running to you (i think it was AoC?)
In Tera you have instant mount without any casting, i think its good, if either way you cant mount while in combat that is.
ive always hated instant mounts.. the way AOC does it is much better.
Fallen Earth was the best, but I don't know how convenient it was. Basically your horse stayed where you left it. If that was a stable, it was safe. If it was in the middle of nowhere, you run the risk of random critters attacking and incapacitating it. You didn't lose the horse, but it was an annoyance running around with bandages healing back to consiousness.
Bottom line, it depends on how much convenient vs realism the developers are opting to achieve. I don't mind any solution presented.
i dunno, i always loved that feature in FE. ^.^
Except hermit crab areas. Hermit crabs and my horse did not get along too well i am afraid.
The only problem with FEs system was people leaving their mounts all over the place. While it was realistic for it to not be stored in your pocket it wasnt very realistic parking your car or horse in the middle of the street. Otherwise I much prefer FEs system.
Dark and light, the miserable failure that it was, actually had what you describe. Wen you summoned your dragon, he would fly in from over head. Other mounts would come up out of the ground or run in from off screen.

Yeah that was AoC - well done.
Having your mount stay out in the world in Fallen Earth really was part of the game too. Some mobs (and players) would shoot your horse, motorcycle, etc.
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
AoC have it like that (or almost, it appears a bit away from you.
It is a nice idea. But I would actually prefer that you leave it at stables or outside the dungeon instead.
Mounts needs a lot of more work in MMOs, mounted combat have a huge potential and I havn't even played a MMO that used lances. A mount is more a weapon and less a mean of transport. You can actually march longer each day than you can ride, the Roman legions have proven that. But as cavelery it is priceless.
Yep, it's AoC. Quick dismount even has you jumping off, slapping the horses on the butt and it runs off. So, two different animations for 2 different dismounts.
When you summon, it runs in from behind the camera, so there's no real fade in, but it fades out after running after about 25 feet when you dismiss it. Still, a nice touch.
I think roman legions only marched because its more cost effective. Dont have to buy or feed a horse.
In the one of the books of Drizzt D'ourden is explained how this is done. The mount lives in an another dimension, when Drizzt uses the figurine, the animal appears in this world out of nothing. Thats what most fantasy mmos are copying, maybe even without knowing what they are copying exactly, you have a figurine, a whistle, or something like that to summon the mount.
The mechanic you talk about, making the mount to come to your toon running from the distance, anyway, looks like a good idea.
What this really is about is suspension of disbelief.
The mount isn't "magically appearing" just like fast travel in LOTRO isn't "teleportation".
It's a "yadda yadda yadda".
"yadda yadda yadda my horse ran from behind a copse of trees and joined me".

Touche. I like this explanation.
Put through the personal paces of my crippled fingers.
this is one of the feature i love the most about MO. the mount system is just awesome(when bug free :P). the horses stay where you dismount (even if you log off ) and if you leave them alone long enough they loose loyalty and run away. they can be attacked and killed but they will defend themselves. if you dont want them out of your sight you can get them to follow you. if you hit them they will attack you. the only way to have them completely safe is to stable them. you then get a horse receipt that can only be used at that stable. it's truly the best mount system i'v ever played.
second to that was AoC that had the horse galop in from a few meters away. that was very nice as well.
Seconded.
Imagine if John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies did 5-10 minutes of footage each time they have to walk back to their horse...
...still I do like that AoC animated theirs.
Can't say it ever was a concern or care of mine. Although isuppose if a company was going to put an effort into it I would rather it be like FE where it is persistent in the world and can actually be killed if left unattended in the wrong area for too long.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Acton movies don't have a mount cast time when the actors walk etiher though, while most MMOs make you wait idly casting the mount.
Imagine a clint eastwood movie, he apppears in the first scene next to the thorse, hen a small loading bar appears next to his kness, when he completes we skip to the next scene where he is already riding it ;D
In Darksiders, the horse spawns out of the ground (since its "special") from behind and you mount it while running. Also, if you jump off a cliff, it spawns in just the right moment, so you land right on top of it. It's actually really cool:)
Eat me!
AoC wins on mounts imo. Great animations, great everything plus most realistic horses in a fantasy game (they even used motion capture on horses I remember reading it from TTH).
I noticed ArcheAge does something similar to the mount calling, might be wrong tho.
