What's wrong with them, honestly. I just read the forums for 10 minutes over there. PVP players are fighting against PVE players, every thread is about WoW, boobs or arguing about server types. General chat is filled with angsty teenagers who love Rift and want to destroy WoW. Players going on the WoW forums making fun of WoW.
Trion? I never see them around.
I feel like I'm in some weird twilight zone.

If Rift becomes popular (I mean really popular) the community will probably have 10-15% of it that are completely vile asshats.
Right now the game has a ton of free players (ViP Beta), from my experience the more players that you have that dont pay for shit, the more trolling players you have because they dont give a shit if they get warnings and bans.
On release it will be much better but dont expect that minmaxing asshat mentality to just vanish.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
I have read Rift forums since day 1 (actually, technically from before, when it was HoT) and it's always been the same in tone if not in content.
I can't post too much here these days about how I feel about or think of Rift for obvious reasons, but suffice to say yeah your right. It won't get better either.
Well, isn't that how it was in the LOTRO closed beta forums?

New to MMO forums I take it?
This is pretty standard with any MMO that is close to/recently launched.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Yes, just like in any beta game the community always starts out like this. Then it gets weeded out when people actually have to buy the game and pay a sub.
"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
yeah i kinda noticed the community wow bashing, but on the other hand there was more than enough sticking up for wow . i wish they would just stfu bashing either game..each to their own imo.
You know, it's been a long time since I've seen BETA forums that were not as described above.
MMO Strategy Guides
All MMO communities are horrible nowadays..and mainly pre or just after relase. You always have the same groups there:
1. wow-fanboys
2. wow bashers
3. other game fanboys
4. other game bashers
5. game to be released fanboys
6. game to be released bashers
Beta testing has nothing to do with beta testing if I read forums like that, it is just about who can troll best. Community will calm down after the free playing time of Rift is over and only then you can really see how the community will be.
I'd like to say you're exaggerating but I'd be lying. I am not a big fan of their forums. When I saw the thread about boobs I was like WTH man??? I really only use their forums to read opinions on different soul combinations. You're really better off discussing the game here for anything else.
There is a booby thread? I'm going to check it out, I need a laugh.
I've stopped reading the official forums, there are lots of people from various groups who whine and bitch on there at the moment, mainly PvPers to be honest.
In the game, the community is very nice so far, not had much in the way of Barren's chat, though when WoW comes up it is a time to turn off the channel, much like any MMO. But they do genuinely seem to have a nice community in the game.
Rift is a game that finally attracted lot of WOW players, what do you expect...its a norm there
The best way to counter this is to flood forums, public chats and what not with insightful content. Post that complains about community, about WoW players or just general bashing won't improve your conception of a good community.
That's because...guess what? The same people play every MMO! You and me, most of the people on this site, WoW players, old EQ players, Aion, War, LotRO players. This is especially true on betas. The primary group of people who participate in beta events are MMO veterans. It's a whole MMO culture and community, not any one individual game's anymore.
And there's only so much the structure and monitoring of a game itself can do to influence the way players talk to each other and the content of their conversation.
I subscribe to Paretos' principle (the 80 20 law). In life 80% of people are generally 'OK' 20% dubious or unpleasant. Sadly MMO's seem to have this reversed. As for Rift I don't think it is much different to most other games.
All forums are like this, have someone tell you one that isn't, then go check it out....Even if its a forum with only 10 guys posting, one of them is the 'jerk'...Let alone one with thousands. Heck look at news stories, people cant keep from posting stupid remarks on them, its the internet and anonymity.
It's pretty funny, over 100 pages last time I looked. Someone wanted a boob slider it sort of devolved from there.
As far as the forum goes? It seems about normal for an mmo forum. The WoW general forum is no different (except for the moderators deleting non wow related threads). At least it isn't as bad as the League of Legends forum.
Are you sure it is 100 pages? I only saw a thread with 2 pages.
Edit: Nevermind, found it. It's 108 pages right now.

108 pages so far
No it hasn't always been like that at all. Go back to the first 4 months and the community was great because Trion were promoting a different type of MMO that they have actually made. WOW was hardly ever mention,it was games like EQ1-Vanguard that RIFT was being compared to.
By the way, i am sure i have meet you in Sirens Grotto years ago?
WoW community is assumed to be one of the worst out there if not the worst. A lot of WoW players have come over to test the BETA of RIFT. I attribute most of the posts to that group. The community will shape itself after the first 6 months. Those that want to leave will leave and the remainder will make up the community.
It seemed to get really bad after the last beta ended. All you could see in general discussion was 15 threads before the mods started to merge them. All whining about PvP vs PvE. The PvE players whining that the PvE servers have to much PvP. The PvP players whining that their servers are too carebear.
TBH though its just a small vocal minority with nothing better to do than troll forums endlessly.
Seems the same to me as the majority of mmo communities these days. Not that I'm defending it or saying that it is okay. Just that sadly this is the mentality of the majority of the community in this genre anymore.
Not that it will completely change once the game goes live but once the majority of these players leave or become paying customers it will at least die down a bit.
A bit mind you...
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
It's the same community that comes to mmorpg.com. After release it will grow silently as their free closed beta key has expired and they have to use a Credit Card to be able to post on the subscribers forums.
You will find them on the next beta forums. Who's next Tera? Guildwars 2?
I will see if I can find some screenshots. The devs used to post funny remarks when trolling started to go bad in general chat during beta 1-4. CB5 the trolling was actually not that bad on Firesand.
