New MMORPG term: FAD MMORPG's

FAD MMORPG

Definition: An MMO that uses ideas from other MMO's that are not new, innovative, or fresh.  This type of MMO gains a lot of intrest during beta and launch only to fail less than a year later (ie: less than 100k players subscribing).  Two Examples: AoC, WAR

Who wants to predict what the new FAD MMO(s) of 2011 is?

Sounds like you're baiting people into saying "RIFT" :)

Once you go go whack, you'll never go back.

What is this "whack", you say? Check out the links!

SWTOR fits the description as well.

ER do we really need another name for the term "clone?"

I hope 2011 sees several new games succeed, I'm a bit burned out on all the current crop.

Honestly I hope we never see another FAD MMO, but, based on personal opinion and what I see in upcoming games.  TERA looks like a FAD MMO, seeing as it's combat is the only thing really making it a hot topic right now.  Combat alone isn't enough to save a game from itself.  Look at AoC.

As I've played Rift already I can see myself playing it years from now after tons of expansions and stuff so I wouldn't count that at all.  The Dynamic content alone separates it from the norm, as will the content in GW2 and whether you like it or not, the huge focus on story per class in SWTOR.

The term FAD is for the ones that spike in popularity and then fail.  Clone is just a leveling game based on EQ (like WoW).  Almost everything that is coming out is a clone so FAD would be for popular failures.  Although they failed primarily because they were a clone.

The term, as it's defined, is useless. It can never be used before on MMO has failed, and it's completely insane to change how you call the MMO after it has failed.
