DC Universe Online: Chris Cao Talks Content Updates

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

DC Universe Online is scheduled for a major content update later this month. MMORPG.com's Drew Wood caught up with DCUO Game Director Chris Cao to talk about the update, what it's bringing to the game and the team's plans for a Valentine's event. Check out Drew's interview and then let us know what you think in the comments below.

Catwoman is also being added as a Legends character, mixing it up for the PvP players who enjoy the legends system. In addition, speaking of PvP, the team is adding a new Open World PvP event, this time to Gotham, akin to the War of the Rings in Metropolis.

Was hoping to see something more substantial for Open World PVP'ers, adding another event like the Ring War is nowhere near adressing the concerns that Open World PVP has no worth. Shame because the PVP is amazing fun in DCUO, but being forced into Arena's for the gear grind is sucking a lot of the fun out.

I think that they are more worried about the PvE crowd atm since PvP creats in parts it's own content, But i8 am sure there will be more PvP content too.

This is a good start... But then again.. so did Maxtrix Online have.

This have been a good conversation

This is very disappointing.  I was hoping to see a nice list of all of the bugs that will be gone and I'm actually surprised the Auction house hasn't been implemented yet or chat fixed.  I've turned away from this game for several weeks now so I haven't been following that closely.

A new instance/storyline for catwoman at max level.....for what?  There are still some that I didn't even bother to visit yet as the rewards aren't very meaningful or fun.  It was just a token grind for me with stats that were barely better.

ugggg i suspect they already had this stuff available, they are trying to create an ilusion of content release, the game doesnt have that much in the way of power sets or armor as it is, i suspect they will eventually release the stuff that would have made this game fantastic to begin with, i am sure ill keep coming back for every interestin update,..this however is not one of those

SOE is going to be in for a shock when it comes to people paying for a subscription.  If they are lucky they will get maybe one or two months out of most players.  There is a lot more to making a MMO than making a fun game.  You also need content to keep your playerbase playing, that is severely lacking in this game.  It is not something that SOE can quickly rectify either.

    Exciting! =D

Thats a fairly large update if you ask me. A fair amount of content for free to expand upon the game.

This doesnt include all the bug fixs and tweaks they make in between each of these updates.

These aren't the patch notes {mod edit}. They're the major content updates actual players (not the negetive nancies on this forum) have been asking for.

I agree! I think it's a great amount of content. It's a lot more than SOE usually offers right off the bat for their MMOs.

i disagree..i like it the way it is and if your saying you would like marks for open world pvp we would have even more lvl 30's camping lvl 4 lvling area ..even more than the lamer's we already have...now i can see maybe only killing lvl 30's open pvp for marks that way we have tons of 30's out there fighting and pvping their lvl or lvl range ....as for auction house i think is just goofy..no need for it at all..unless your a noob and decide to gimp your wallet early and be broke all the time because the missions give you much better gear imo and gear comes pretty easy anyway untill much higher lvl...too many people want instant vl maxes and instant ownage in games nowa days ...the grind you say is what makes it all worth while imo...not every game needs a "instant WOW" type factor

I agree with your statement that these aren't patch notes, but I take exception to your categorization of "actual players"?    A lot of us "negative nancies" that held off buying did so because of the lack of content.  This sounds like it was probably being polished right before release.  Let's see if they keep consistently rolling out new content every month (or nearly every month, which seems to be the new phrase).

As a station acount holder an eq 1 player for 7 years or so  um yeah thats alot of content for soe.Question i have will it be seasonal an poof at the end of feb?Eq1 has many decent events an zones an quests that are seasonal Some of which should just be left up all year imho.

so wish it had a chat an nameing system like Champions online.Chat is holding the social aspect of the game back alot.Other than that im haveing great fun when i play. Its not meant to be a 8 hour grind fest game .So far its been fun for me a few odd bugs but nothing that would break the game for me.Im aprocaing it as if its Batman Arkham asylum but with tons of other players .

I completely agree, The reason open world PvP ins't rewarded is cause you lose nothing from it as well. Maybe.. what? 5 mins of time doing a part of a quest that last ..2 mins. Its just fun, let it be that. Join a PvP instance, do legends. As seen they are addeding more

I don't recall seeing anyone asking for cherub costumes, but I probably missed that post. ;)

And I'm not sure you can call events "major content" because it WILL go *poof* after a few weeks. I was really hoping to see more power sets and possibly a new part of some city...not just another box to fight in. Hopefully in the next update though.

  • RymosRymos Member CommonPosts: 58

This is a disappointment on some level; I wanted new power-sets; lol.

  • DignaDigna Member UncommonPosts: 1,994

It may be a lot more than SOE normally hands out but is it enough to hold subs? Personally I think not. I think that if the content was lacking enough for many casual players to hit the max level in a few days and/or weeks, a 'big' patch like this isn't going to be enough to hold folks for another month until more content will (possibly) arrive.

I took my time for the first couple of weeks and got to 20 or so, tried a couple re-rolls and then canceled. The content was lacking for me before level 30. This patch doesn't sound like it will be enough to hold the bulk  of subs, IMO. People are quick to quit games these days if there doesn't appear to be enough for them.

  • GrayGhost79GrayGhost79 Member UncommonPosts: 4,775

Many will be disappointed because most were hoping for new power sets as the game really didn't launch with enough of a variety and left many wanting for more from the word go.

Now being reasonable this content update is great and more than enough, not as much as we were hoping for or at least not exactly what we were hoping for but this is more than you will see most MMO's dish out a month after launch.

With that being said though I really hope there are some power sets coming soon, very soon. I have a roster full of fire and Ice guys because I like more tankish chars. Would be nice to have a little variety power wise so that I don't have to make yet another fire or ice guy lol. More power sets asap please!

Verdict: Good update from the looks of it, but we want powers asap.

We do need another purely physical power set (i.e. the Incredible Hulk). Other than that, they should be fleshing out those that already exist. You also have to admit the cities are dead when flying or runing through them - more life would be appreciated, rather than a new section.

why bother with new power sets and end level grind stuff when they dont even have a targeting system or chat that works worth a dam?

i have actually already cancelled beyond the free trial. so .. whatever. im dissapointed. i played COH for YEARS!! (though they never made that right by makeing COH and COV 2 separate games. at least SOE got that part right by making heros and villains occupy the same city)

EVERY MMO company promises content updates monthly so I find it hard to trust SoE. But if they do stick to their word, I will give them props for doing so.

Chris Cao said in another interview here that the batcave raid was already built and being tested way back in beta, so I think you are right.

There might be a little more content that was already made, but didn't make it to release that can be patched up for the monthly content updates, but after that things are going to be done on whatever can be accomplished in 30 day periods (or whatever they end up being).

That will be interesting to see, because if it goes well then it might just raise the bar for the rest of the industry.  If not then DCU will have some real problems.

I just dont get people anymore. All I see is posts on how they wont be able to put content out month after month and here, just a couple months after release they have some nice new content and thats not enough. People havent even tried the content yet they yawn about it. And god forbid they dont address every single thing folks wanted, then they just fail. Why not cut them some slack and let things play out. If you can tell me what mmo does everything exactly how every player wants it, when they want it, so I can sub to it.

Im sure you all want new content every week, or better yet everyday.

But then again im sure people would complain they release TOO MUCH content and need to slow down right?
