This list gets a D- because it doesn't mention Ultima Online which every good crafting system copied including SWG.
Any decent crafting system will be grindy at some point, but at least you can macro in UO.
SWG was the closest thing to take the Ultima torch, but Fallen Earth is pretty good. Too bad G1 owns it now.
For me gathering resources and crafting is the backbone of any MMO worth it's salt. Lack of that understanding makes an MMO just an action game. I think that's why so many MMOs are failing. They're just boring.
"There are at least two kinds of games. One could be called finite, the other infinite. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play." Finite and Infinite Games, James Carse
They should make a new column once Wildstar, ESO, and Landmark come out. IMO, FFXIV is the best crafting mmo currently on the market. But I am looking forward to the next crop of offerings.

This is a good list but there is another crafting system that deserves a look.
Puzzle Pirates had crafting where each trade had its own mini-game that skill to master.
Example:
Blacksmithing mini-game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSThWVbFSFI
Weaving mini-game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNi28yShO4Q
Now if only this crafting system was built into a modern MMO.
