Sort of new to Final Fantasy...

Hello everyone i've played almost every mmorpg and still havent found one that compares to SWG so now im just desperate to find a game to immerse my time in ive been keeping an eye on final fantasy but just wasnt sure.. What does this game have to offer in terms of gameplay are there dungeons??? are there quests?? is the game still populated to a degree that im just not walking around in an empty world? if anyone could throw in more info that would be great

Honestly...stay away for now. Wait till they have completely overhauled the game as they plan to do. Right now it's fairly boring, there are no true "quests" just dailies called guildleves that are mindnumbingly boring. Same with crafting. Some storyline hidden behind having to level your character up which isn't much fun right now either.
Oh, but it is pretty to look at and does have potential to be the biggest MMORPG come back ever known, but that's a risk of course. I would wait personally. Look for a different game to try. Maybe try FFXI but be prepared for crappy controls. If you are prepared for it you will enjoy it all the more.
My advice would be to steer well clear of this 'for now' the game is a mess at the moment - but it is being worked on and hopefully one day might be worth spending some time in.
Maybe give FFXI a try - its currently a much better game than this. My advice would be to download the 14 day trial and see how you get on with it - the game isn't to all tastes - i however spent 5 of the best MMO years there

Game just had a rough release few months back.
A new team has come on board and is working hard it seems to address all shortcomings. As a result of this the game is in free-mode. So you only need to buy the box, no subs until SE says otherwise. I also think the box fee got a reduction. Not a lot of money if you want to check the game out, but I would wait a while tbh.
On population I can't comment, but I'm sure you will get an answer soon.
If i ever wasted $50 on a game it was on that POS! Dont waste your money you will regret it.
If there was an award for worst mmorpg of the year , it would be in a close race with Alganon for the award!
My advice is wait fir the revamped version or hope it goes F2p.
Looks like the right answers were already provided- stay away for now, check back once the dev team is done with whatever they're attempting to do. Which means Late Summer-Early Fall probably.
Do not listen to Demonikgod, he is entitled his opinion even though it is severely sore he sounds like a butthurt kid who got called out too many times. I currently play the game and I honestly think it is a solid title, there is stuff being worked on to make up for a not so great launch ( game was just pushed out before it was polished) and the game has received very harsh criticism. People tend to forget no MMO is good at launch most aren't even barely playable it usually takes atleast 6 months before the game is decent at all. Examples? It's predecessor Final Fantasy 11 was exactly the same at launch, hell it was worse the game was nearly broken, and World of Warcraft the MMO giant itself had more than a fair share of problems. Hell the servers crashed so much at its beginning and even stayed down for an entire week, yet FFXIV gets slammed for being more playable than those 2 titles at the same point of game time.
Sure the game lacks content, guildleves are fun at first and are kind of fun once you find a group to do them with consistently but that does get boring and the leveling to get to the missions makes those missions and storyline that much better and a small reprieve from the grind. But even I admit that they should be more frequent, all I can say is goto http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/pl/index.html and read up on the stuff from the developer and get a feel for the game via it's website and see if you like it, if you do give it a try, because new content is just around the corner, March and the following months will be adding all kinds of new stuff that all the current players are really looking forward to.
