I am not some WoW kiddie who grew up on themeparks and has no idea what a sandbox is. I cut my teeth in UO and had an absolute blast in SWG.
That said, I find the "If you don't like this game you suck and don't like sandboxes!" accusations I've seen in this forum and from fanboys in-game a bit like the "you're not a patriot" one, it's just not true.
This game is unfinished (read, not buggy. It is way beyond that). There is no other way to describe it.
I was on the fence between this and DCUO. Good god I wish I had chosen differently, but I liked the look of the characters.
You may enjoy earthrise If you like:
Mobs that will go invulnerable at random times
Mobs that shoot through geometry (walls, hills, buildings, boulders, etc) in a modern, shooter-style game
Randomly de-syncing with servers so mobs and other players become invisible
Mobs that instantly heal themselves as soon as they're fired upon.
10-15s chatlag
Party chat that inexplicably stops working after a few minutes.
Horrendous lag (generally 400ms+, yes, in a shooter this is horrendous for all the tab-target folks)
Terrible performance even on powerful machines with settings low (this has been detailed in many threads)
Pinpoint accuracy required for all weapons, including shotguns and flamethrowers.
Those are just some of the bugs and/or horrible design elements I remember off the top of my head from my 4 hours or so I spent trying my hardest to like this game. That is not counting the FEATURES THAT ARE COMPLETELY MISSING. For all the brainiacs saying "derp I've been in betas and alphas, this is definitely better than alpha!" I've got news for you, alpha is defined as FEATURE COMPLETE. All features, in one capacity or another, are complete and functioning in game. The maps could be half-built and everything using base textures, but everything is in and working, even in a buggy state. That's alpha. This game is not feature complete, they cut shit tons of features to get there, promising that they'll be patched in.
Yeah, uh, F*** that! Why do you believe them? They also said vehicles would be in by launch! Look at the track record before blindly fanboying your way forward, PLEASE.
All I can say is, even if you find my delivery abrasive, please listen to the message. Do not waste your $50 on this game. You'd be much better off spending it to buy some warm clothes for a random hobo, at least then you could feel good about your charity and be pretty sure it wasn't going to complete and utter waste.

So right now we have another Mortal Online?
Despite the fact that I haven't really played much due to there being no 'invert mouse' option, I have seen the global chat and it is non stop complaining about technical issues.
You can't even map the f**king keyboard without editing a text file.
This game was released prematurely (as is the case with most MMOs these days). I've already asked for a refund (and I'll chargeback if I dont get one).
It could be the best game ever made but the lack of polish and the omission of the most basic features mean I'll never know. I'm not subsidising anymore open Betas
I am going to say this.. you got what you paid for. Look at all of the feedback over the past few years about P2P games. Look at AOC, WAR, AION etc. Every one of these games had a HUGE amount of dissatisfied buyers... and that is what P2P is all about.
The business model in P2P is to trick you into paying for something with marketting and hype. The reality is that most customers today are being dissapointed... but only after they have shelled out the cash.
If they do a good enough job, the game will survive to the next round, which is to make it work. Sure, that may take 3/6/9/12 months... but if they get enough cash up front, they can affort to make this game. They will then work on getting players back with the idea that they can now play the game they paid for a year ago...
Welcome to the P2P treadmill.
Maybe you wouldn't be so mad if yo read this:

Vehicles are coming in April, FPS will be improved in March. From your post I am certain you have not been in the Earthrise beta and have not seen the imrpovements that the devs did. I've been in beta over 6 months and during that time there has been a HUGE improvement in the game client and servers. Yes, the game has some issues, but they are not gamebraking for me. It really is up to the tolerance level of everyone. I am having fun and will be there for a long time to come.
Everyone reading this: If you buy Earthrise now, don't expect a polished AAA game and don't expect a smooth ride in the next few months. What is important right now is that:
1. Servers are stable and don't crash.
2. The game has HUGE potential
3. Earthrise features the largest open world with incredible design, no instances, no loading screens
4. Countless possibilities to build your character
5. And most importantly, the game is fun and doesn't get boring (I am in for 6 months and this is a rare situation for me)
Got to love this line, so right now its crap is what you mean.
The first line of defense for apologist of shitty games everywhere.
No, I mean it depends what you are looking for. If you want to play a polished game with few issues, wait at least 3-6 months. If you want to be an early adopter of the product and help improve this product you can join now.
The game is fun even now and the positive things are more than the negative. It stays on top compared to other indy MMO games, except EVE I guess.
OP is correct, buy at your own peril. It is another Mortal Offline.

I will admit, I like this title nonetheless. If in 10-30 days the lag and some of the other problems are addressed, I'll give the game a go. As it is now... NO WAY.
I do agree the game is buggy. The devs also agreed and thier giving away free game time.
Calling the game unfinished however is unfair. The devs made it VERY clear what features where going to be in the game at laucn. For example its been known a long time that vehicles won't be in at lauch, the NEVER claimed they would be in like you say. Also if you read any of the forums you would have known that the game is in a buggy state. It's not thier fault if consumers don't take the time to research a product.
I'm perfectly fine with people bashing the game for performance issues becuase there are many, but don't accuse the devs of lying when they didn't hide anything about release.
Just to make a note. If you are useing the /trace command ingame then you can not go by the reported information there. It does not work as a ping tool to give you your latency to the server. This HAS been posted on the offical forums and confirmed as such. /trace was never designed or intended to be used as a way to measure latency to the server. It factors in alot of other things to determin what is reported.
Not even close. ER crushes MO. I took 10 steps in MO, then 20 more and found nothing to do. And it wasn't intuitive. I haven't logged back into that game since then.
This game, I took 2 steps and was instantly on my way to doing things, and it was intuitive once I hit the TAB key. Hands above MO.
I say buy the game, since we get 2 free months now and it definitely has potential and charm and nice immersion, to me at least.
Ah I dont know about that.
I actually like the game. but seriously there are some big problems.
Almost unplayable FPS.
And the lag.. let me tell you, I live in the middle of the USA, and my ping is something like 500-3000ms.
When I pull the trigger, it literally takes 5 seconds for my guy to fire, and the mobs are warping around so bad you are luck to hit anyway.
And it is missing such basic features. No friends list? What is this? 1997?
Mobs if they try to chase you and go across a zone area, will run back to their spawn point and heal to full health. and I am talking if they move 2 feet and cross a zone boundsry, bam, full health.
They should have never EVER released the game in this state.
A few good things? The GMs I talked to in game are VERY apologetic. The Devs actually seem like they are trying, but for $50 bucks i expected at least the core features to work.
So no they didnt lie, they just didnt tell the whole truth.
It's still better than MO by a longshot.
Fair enough. But i still rank it at one of the worst. Probably as bad or worse then Anarchy Online.
Yeah Buy the game.... shell out 50 dollars or euro for those 2 "free" months... some definition of FREE, eh?
The dudes over at MastHead should take a page out.... page? bah they shold borrow the entire book from fellow indie devs over at Perpetuum.
9/10 (Euro/USD) sub for 30 days with NO BOX COST for a smooth launch of a game with most of it's advertised features ENABLED on launch. They are also giving out recruit codes for 15 days of free trial for friends. Don't want to shell out 10 bucks on a game you might not like? pay 3 to try the game for 4 days... get the initial feel of it.
Now that's an indie company that RESPECTS their potential customers as well as THEMSELVES by showing that they know what kind of game they have and what can be reasonably expected from their clients to pay.
Or you could go ahead and congratulate companies like Masthead that deliver unfinished games that don't even work smoothly by giving them 50 bucks .... for 2 FREE months.
No one is forcing you to. But take this for perspective. I shelled out $80 for the FFXIV collectors edition. I still don't find enough worth in the game to play it right now and I can play for free until an undetermined time. Earthrise at least is fun and makes me want to log in. For $30 less AND I get an extra free month.
It's all about how you look at it. I've spent money on much worse games over the years, many single players. It's my hobby, there's going to be a cash sink. I knew that when I started it.
You paid 80 bucks and you still talking about free gametime.... you sir have a very weird sense of economics.
On behalf of the MMO community i would like to thank you for propagating the issue with Sub Par (to put it VERY mildly) releases of MMO Games by giving money to developers that clearly do not deserve it.
I bought it knowing full well some performance issues wouldn't be addressed until March, so I'm not unhappy with my purchase at all (I'm also happy to explore and learn how to craft during the next month or two, maybe I'd be much less patient if my main focus was pvp). And now we've even been compensated with free game time, too, so I have even less to complain about. For those who didn't read about beta issues expected to carry over into release and the near-future fixes in the works, I can understand why you're unhappy, allthough at the moment I think things are worse than they were during the brief hours I played beta (for sure the lag I'm getting is), and I attribute that to it being day 2 of release. Right now, Earthrise is jam-packed with players, all crammed into a small, smoky area, shooting at each other.
Edited to add: Where's the 80 dollar ticket price coming from? I'm in the US, I paid 50 USD, at least according to my receipt I did.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
~Albert Einstein
I bought and had a blast last night.
The FPS and server lag are a big problem.
Don't know if the server can handle the load (they should of had an open beta)
Just getting the server right will be a big improvement.
Is this bad as MO or Anarchy...No
comparable to DF
DF had more server stabaility becuase they limited how many copies they would sell, turning away customers.
And the lowbie PVP is fun, liek it was in DF.
We'll see if High level PVP is fun, unlike in DF

All defenders saying that this game is as good or better than other MMO launches or development phases are biased. THis is one of the MOST if not THE most unifinshed games to launch, am i biased against it? I wouldnt say that because i followed this game just like all the fanbois and loved everything I read about it. this is truly a barebones product'
Now think about all other releases, that passed closed and open betas, and at launch still had bugs and issues and how people complained about it; when 2 months are up and ER has most of the promised features in, imagine how buggy it still will be becuase of all the newly implemented features that have to be tweaked. So in 2 months you will still be looking at constant problems that all COMPLETE MMOs face at launch. DOnt believe that you will be playing a polished game in 2 months.
I put a cross on graveyard of this game, and will never come back to it.
4. Countless possibilities to build your character
From what i have seen its a very very limited character customization. correct me if i am wrong please.
imo a sandbox starts with the character, even if it is pvp based. To not be able to make your avatar feel like your own is bad news.
It will be the same if not worse then in DF, the character gap will only grow. However right now ER has bigger problems to tackle. The game is a huge mess, poor client performence, lagging server, bugs and hardly any content. Games like Tabula Rasa had more to offer on launch and much more polish and they still failed and been shut down.
He means skill wise. There are 250+ skills to choose from and alot of build options.
The character creation is limited, that doesn't matter to me but I suppose it might annoy some.
stopped reading after the first 2 sentences op posted
you starts your topic with please please please please and then say you are not some kiddie
YEA RIGHT
That's definitely easier than addressing anything I actually said regarding the game. LOVE your sig >.< rofl
