ATI Card Woes

//\//\oo//\//\oo Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 2,767

I've researched the official forums, but I can't seem to get this game to run well with my card.

Even with all of the settings turned down with the lowest quality shaders, the tax on my GPU and CPU is ridiculous (bringing them both up to and beyond 84 C). The irony is that when I turn my settings up everything vanishes and the performance gets better.

I've downloaded the latest drivers to no avail. Regardless of what I do, the game performs horribly on my machine. Has anybody managed to get this game running well on an ATI card, or even an HD 4650?

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

Temp solution would be to play with the side off.

Do you have adequation fans inside your machine?

MY mothers pc is awful as it uses the CPU fan as its cooling fan lol :-S

So everytime i play a game the temp goes through the roof.

Turn shadows off and your FPS will double. Not kidding, thier shadow engine is the problem.

They are adequate given that it's a laptop, so I can't really readily modify them. I do use a cooling pad, which knocks off a good 4-5 degrees C, but other than that it'd be rather difficult to immediately cool them.

The thing is that the game simply doesn't perform well; I can play other games with better graphics and not have to deal with the issue, yet this one, even on the lowest settings performs awfully.

I actually used to play WAR, which uses the same engine, on a vastly inferior rig, yet it performed pretty well (it had an Nvidia card in it though..).

Yes, I tried that , actually. I disabled EVERYTHING, set the drawing distances to their minima along with everything else. In addition to that I even used the lower quality shaders, so that the game basically looks like EQ.

It still taxes my card horribly, even with all of those settings.

Oh, well, go with what Gummi said about turning shadows off, see if that helps.

Are you running ATI overdrive? I'd disable that, or you could use it with normal clock speeds and run the fan at 75-100% speed, however this will reduce the life of your fan on your graphics card (if it has one, ive not much xp with laptops).

Also activating Overdrive apparently voids your warranty so use at your own risk, also I found when i reformated my pc that when i installed the ATI catalyst, the overdrive was back to being disabled.

My fps in this beta ranges from 60+ fps to about mid 20's in Meridian with a bunch of people moving around. Turning off ground clutter and anti-aliasing helped the most. I've heard you can also turn off the nameplates above people's or NPC heads and that could help too. Just depends on if you're over taxing your system or if there's something incompatible.

It's weird that turning things up improves performance and lowers the load on your system, that sounds more like something doesn't like your system.

I have an ATI HD5770 and a Core2 Duo Processor. I do have shadows on max setting and that doesn't seem to cause much in the way of issues. I think the weak point in my system is the Core2 Duo. A Quad core cpu is recommended.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I just upgraded my Core2Duo toa  Core2Quad and had a good increase in fps.  Monitoring all four cores, i've been very impressed with the multithreading that takes place in this game.

Thank beta 1 for that. Multithreading was awful then.

With the latest beta performance has gotten even better.

At least you don't have a 3870 (screw you ATI).  Turn off Shadows, and realize that ATI Mobile is not ATI.

Even though I have turn down the graphics on my laptop (with ATI 3650 mobility), I've been impressed at how fun and playable it still is.

Runs just fine on my 4870 aside from the occational annoying graphics glitch but it seems to be getting better.

World objects like water, tents, boxes, and such no longer disappear. The random particle effects that never disappear are much less than they used to be.

A 4650 is pretty old and not the performance model of the card series. Probably need to turn graphic settings way down.

Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.

I have a 6850. I run it on Ultra settings, but the FPS is not good 18-30 fps... I have shadows on, and can't enjoy the game with them off. Makes a world of difference to me. Game looks completely different without shadows. So I had to turn them back on. The 10 + fps i got from removing shadows was not worth it.

So I have  1680X1050 monitor, any suggestions here to help my fps go up while keeping ultra settings? i also run with a 940 BE AMD 3.2 ghz quad core cpu.

Well the European server is down, so I'll try installing an application profile and see if it helps any.

They dropped it for around 45 min of maintenance about 5-10 before my first post in the thread - not sure of the time that has passed, but figure it to be an hour'ish endeavor.

I envy you. I feel like there is something wrong with my card now. 6850 is a decent card.. I should be at least getting half of what you are getting. What is your secret bro?

I also have a decent rig. So that's certainly not the problem. What do you run your resolution at?

Hell ... then that's not very impressive at all, no offense.
