Hah! I did the same thing but from the opposite side. I started as a defiant caster but didn't care for it. I switched to guardian and chose warrior and it was much better. Maybe it's just the warrior classes that are better?
You know, like many, I really, really want a new MMO that will keep me happy for a year+. It's nice to be able to invenst in an MMO long term, be in a good guild, make friends, etc...
However, I'm beginning to realize that if an MMO keeps me busy for 2 to 3 months, that's ok too. I buy a good console game, get maybe 20 hours out of it. Had fun, maybe play it again, maybe not. Done. I get a lot more bang for the buck from a decent MMO, even if I don't play more than a couple months.
The key for me, though, is the question "is the game likely to keep me well occupied for at least the first month"? An MMO becomes a very bad deal if you buy it, play it ten hours, hate it and uninstall.
Some games are just so bad, technically and design wise, that it becomes pretty obvious that it will be a dud for most people. Even with those games, you may find a small group who like it and play it for a year+, but most people will have a bad impression and leave in under 10 hours.
When a game IS that bad, it's a good thing to warn prospective buyers. However, too many people today will take a subjectively negative opinion of a technically solid title and trash it, because they have a need for other people to validate their opinions. (Or for other reasons).
Rift is a technically solid game that shows some nice creativity, gives players freedom over their character build and offers something new with rifts. It's not a perfect game, by far. I'll be surprised if I play it more than two or three months, but it's a game that is worth a shot for people looking for a new game.
For me, I'm pretty sure I'll get at least that full first month out of it, so I pre-ordered and will give it a real shot.

I may get flamed but in my opinion Rift is alot more then just a WOW clone. Every MMORPG takes good mechanics and implements them into their game. Lets look at the UI for instance. UI's have evolved and we all know the good and bad UI in different games.
I think Rift has taken from many games and executed it well. I love the class system and soul trees. The Trion Dev's are listening to the players and beta testers feedback. There is an Alpha beta test going on as well for high end content. Nothing more can be said about this as we are still under an NDA for that. Take a look at the beta event notes and you will see a huge amount of changes from one event to the next.
Do not judge the game until you get out of the starter areas. The starter areas are extremely linear and are designed to be that way. The game really opens up once you hit Meridian and beyond. As a player you can choose to partake in the rifts or just move along and do your quests or kill mobs. The rifts offer an option to join public groups and they spawn all over the place. The level 20+ rifts will take groups to accomplish as the bosses are tough, you can still do rifts if you do not want to join the groups and still get rewards, but you will not do them totally alone. I find it alot quicker to level doing rifts.
I am not a big crafter as most stuff is just a time sink and in rift so far that holds true for armor and cloth items except for bags.
Comparing this game to Aion is hilarious. My suggestion is to try the game and try to make it to level 20 and then check out the real part of the game, before you hate it. I did not expect much from the game after all the recent failure from some big name game houses. But Rift is fun for me and alot of others. I was surprised and almost quit playing it at the lower levels.

While clerics do have some really awesome and unique healing souls they really shine when it comes to melée DPS, tanking, casting and being A pet class. The cleric calling is really versatile and one of my favorite callings so far.

Hi, how is LOTRO? You get easily over zealous about mediocre games.
They do not shine. They are barely adequate. Warriors have more ranged DPS than clerics have melee DPS (and they can move while DPSing) and tanking agro on class with double nerfed DPS (minus for heals and minus for tanking) is quite an issue and warriors an mages have better pets, ranger probably too which leaves you last. Good to hear you found the one cleric spec that is good, because you are right about one thing, one of the clerics specs will always be good, but it might end up to be completely different class than you wanted to play and you may find out rogue or mage took over you healer spot, at least that is one aspect warriors cannot do or it would be all warriors soon.
I played thru multiple avenues by rolling Guardian and Defiant but still people chewed my head off with my review and thoughts because I dont like the game. And then others were like WELL you didnt play to such and such level you gotta play till higher lvl to get a feel for a game BS BS BS ive seen posts from people who are lvl 30+ that are saying the same things as I was. And also like I said before the quests on both sides are the same just slightly modified. For instance the one quest in the beginning were you have to run up the bridge and take out a guy its the EXACT same quest on the opposite side.
That argument annoys me, too. Big reason being, that if you played to whatever level they recommended(usually about half to 2/3 of the game), and you said you still didn't like it, they'd probably say: "Dude, you played it for that long? Why would you play a game you didn't like for that long??? You're lying/a troll/a WoW Fanboi/WoW Employee, etc...
That said, I'm up to level 15 in the Guardian area, and it does start getting more interesting. I'm still not that into the rifts, though. I spent maybe 45 minutes to an hour playing them and came across maybe 4 different scenarios while closing about a dozen rifts. The nature ones in particular had some cool elements, but like I said, I repeated most of them at least once; I was expecting alot more variety. On the plus side, I'll say that I was getting good FPS despite a LOT of players and mobs all hacking away at each other.
Methinx it'll be a good game in its own right, but it's NOT a WoW killer. If this had been the game they made when instead of WAR 3 years ago, it would probably be healthy, today. But seeing as it is being made NOW, against a WoW rebirth and SWToR out, soon, methinx it'll be running to stand still.
I would not compare to WAR. WAR is a sore wound. They wanted to make game that would be so much what people here want, that would be pure fun, little grind, lot of PvP, somewhat sandboxy, listening to playerbase, full of great stories but still feel familiar. But they did not manage to make good code backbone and were not machiavellian enough. If anything it was WAR failure that led to cynism and spawned MMOs that keep head down, do not really try and play safe.
Look again at WAR orc then look at any Rift race, there is no comparison, heck WAR nun will wipe floor with all ascendants combined, WAR has soul, Rift is vendor brand mass product. Maybe good but not a trend setter.

omg i played as a inquistor this beta and almost guldged my eyes out! Each bread and butter skill required me to sit in one place and wait for 2-3 second cast times lol.. And laughable DoT's at best.
I'am debateing weather i wanna go full out bard or paragon/champion/riftblade at launch, but i defiantly know the casting classes arn't for me in this game.. But yeah, really a lot of you're experience will be based on the class you play and each class is extremley different.. I've grown to love the soul system.

I went deep spec Cabalist. I liked the root and blink. The channeling drain was pretty bad ass as well. I'm more of a melée DPS or tank normally but for some reason in this game I've gravitated toward healing and casting more. I do love the shaman build too. For my warrior I went champ/riftblade/paragon its like a arms warrior on crack. Such a fun spec. Problem is I rolled him on a pve server and those guys are too serious. God forbid you roll a warrior and don't feel like tanking in an instance lol. The people on the pvp servers are much more chill about that stuff.
combat animation, this is what make or kills the game for me, so whats your take in this area bros?
in wow, as a dual wield war, i see the most fluid motion in a melee class, the way the ,y war block the way it execute skills
pls advise
By fluid, i guess you mean Repetative?
But as you already know it's been said that Rft doesn't have the best charactor animation. But it still looks more advanced than wow due rift having the wepon not being an static object.

Rift's dual wield looks good. Especially if you unlock the parry attack which is basically like a dual stab at the same time after which there is a "pull out" animation with both weapons. Wouldn't look very good with two dull maces but it does with swords and maybe other sharp weapons.
Some of the attacks look like uppercuts or spin uppercuts. The 3 point combos look like jump + coming down with both weapons.
Auto attack works well since each sword swings independently from the other.
There are some problems with animation while swimming but it still looks good for the most part. Even wow has problems in water though.
Running and attacking can look a little weird sometimes but sometimes the animations work perfectly and for the most part it looks good and at least the gameplay works fine. Standing of course is perfectly fine. But this isn't going to stop you from wanting to run circles around people with a razer naga because it still looks cool.
I started out as a Defiant Warrior in Beta 5 ... wanted to recreate a "Shadowknight" character and I failed horribly. It was boring, and I almost didn't log back in, but I wanted to try out a crowd control as well. Didn't like that much and I was losing hope.
I forced myself to log in, created a bard/ranger and was having a blast. I thought, there's something to this. I just totally messed up my previous attempts.
Beta 6 rolls around and I switched servers to play with a friend (who wasn't able to log in... so I played without.) I figured I'd play a mage, and I heard people raving over the Chloromancer (healer) so I went for it:
Best Experience in an MMO in years, bar none.
I ended my mage at level 21 after running through Fae dungeon (Guardian Side) twice. I loved the effects they rolled into that instance (mountain top blizzard.../gush) and I loved healing people for rifts. I've never played a healing role in my life besides Vanguard's Disciple, but I found myself hooked on this Chloro. It was the most rewarding experience (besides the asshats who steal the objective from under you when you pull a mob to get it yourself... but that's not the fault of the game.)
I think a lot of this game is going to be finding your niche and hoping they don't change it.
I'am debateing weather i wanna go full out bard or paragon/champion/riftblade at launch, but i defiantly know the casting classes arn't for me in this game.. If you play as Paragon at first level, don't forget that you have to equip two weapons at first since your only special requires dual weild. They equip you with a sword and shield initially for some reason, but you do have an extra one handed sword in inventory. You just have to equip it offhand.
One thing that that made me discover... if a fight lasts too long(like if all you do is autoattack), the mob will vanish and reset somewhere else before you can kill it.
I see a lot of people saying they almost quit due to cleric being so boring, my experience is just the opposite. I LOVE my cleric. He kills fast, is ranged and melee, and has great survivability. It is honestly one of the more fun healing classes/professions Ive played. Reminds me of a battle acolyte in the old days of Ragnarok Online. So far I like him better than rogue or warrior, have not done mage yet, so no way to compare.
My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.
After not liking RIFT initially as a Guardian, today I tried Defiant and went with a more basic class, i.e. Warrior.
Between starting a simple class and choosing a different side made a big difference for me.
I hated the Graveyard starting area for Guardian, but love the starting area for Defiant.
At least for now, I feel that RIFT is a step forward for MMOs in a minor way...let me explain.
Basically, you take EQ, EQ2, WAR and especiially WoW, but remove all the cartoony graphics of WoW as well as the cutesy tootsy crap in WoW, then remove the grind of EQ and EQ2, and add WAR graphics that have been upgraded to 2011 levels.
Thus, you will find much of what is already out there, but avoiding the errors of WAR, and removing the grind of EQ and the baby looking stuff in WoW, and with better animations and combat than all of the above.
In a nutshell, if you want to play an more upgraded version of a combo of the above games and a more adult and seriious version of WoW then you will like RIFT.
I no longer think RIFT is boring now that I have a side/race/class/starting area I enjoy, so hopefully I will eventually find out what RIFT has that the others dont have.
One thing I would like is a RIFT novel, as I am an avid reader and game novels help me retain interest in a game.
basically an all in one game that represents all the lessons learned from the mainstream MMO market in one game over the past decade. As much as I am not attracted to WoW, WAR, EQ and EQ2 I can appreciate this and I also think this is a milestone for this platform. Moving forward MMO games will have to come up with new ideas now to push things forward so to speak.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
There are elements of Rift that make it special to me.
Rare mobs are #1 in my book and Rift has them. They are marked with a diamond above thier head. I played the game to level 18 so far on one char and to 15 on another and to 8 and 10 on yet others. I wanted to try out a good mix of styles to see what the game had to offer. I can say that each syle character plays very different. Some use abilities that are reactive, others use built up energy, some use mana, there is just a good mix of styles of play and I don't think I will be getting bored with Rift any time soon.
I did notice a slow down in leveling pace around level 14 which was good because it allows for crafting and exploration. You are actually rewarded with special things for exploration from puzzle type games to artifacts and more. I feel the level of difficulty scales with your character's build so if you want more challenge there are certainly more challenging character souls to choose from that will test your abilities.
Many people are right about the game. If you play it like a race you will be unhappy with the game. If you play it more as a fun world in which you can experament and make friends then it will open up to you.
At first when I was playing I thought it was basically a shined up WoW....but I see more and more EQ in the game every time I play, especially on my highest character at 18th. I am ok with a grind as long as it's challenging and fun and so far Rift has given me all the things I have been looking for in a game for the past several years.
I will be signing up for the 6 month payment plan for under $10 a month...very nice payment structure for such a good game.
Well, I played until late Sunday Night and didnt even watch the Super Bowl, and had a blast.
I really like the Public Quests and the way you get messages regarding the state of Invasions and Rifts.
Seemed like there is always something to do.
I cant believe I skipped a few BETA sessions based on my initial impressions, now I cannot wait for launch and want the Collectors Edition.
I truly truly feel this game will give WoW a run for its money and even if some, many, or none come to RIFT from WoW, I feel RIFT will raise the bar and force Blizzard to make some changes for the better in WoW.
First, I feel RIFTs great graphics will cause WoW to upgrade its cartoony graphics. Otherwise WoW might get branded as a "babys game". Also, because RIFT seems to be taking the best parts of other MMOS such as WoW, WAR, AoC, and leaving out the bad means RIFT devs are listening to what players say.
It is so nice to have a serious game with the same addictive qualities both WoW and EQ had before those games went downhill.
Also, what some previous posters said about leveling slowing down later at around 14th....thats a nice formula because it gets you out of the lower levels fast, which historically players dont like an early level duldrums....and the fact it slows down later is great because thats what made EQ so addictive for so long even though it was beginning to pale was that you REALLY REALLY felt like you accomplished something.
In AoC and WoW you feel like everything is handed to you. And for the previous poster who mentioned how much better AoC is...well...if you like banging rocks in Bori, like having complete zone lockouts on the Cimmeria and Tyranny servers where level people 20-79 levels higher than you gank you and ruin mini games by having pre-mades who also plant sabateurs in Mni game PUGs..well yeah then AoC is for you.
My only concern in RIFT is class balance, which might rear its ugly head in PvP in a bad way. Other than that I am loving RIFT.
I am not loving Rift, however, I am determined to at least give it a shot. I will level to cap and pvp. Probably as a rang/mm/sab or /rang/riftb/sab :O As someone else said, I aswell started to get more and more of a EQ(2) vibe the longer I played (I got to 18)

I'll probably play all the beta's just to see how far I go, but I don't suspect I'll be buying. There's good stuff there but nothing I'd leave LotRO for.

I liked LotRo. I even over-looked the quirky fighting style. Bought a guild house, sat in Bree playing music. Fun things to do besides the gear grind that other MMO's offer. Moria made me leave. I hated it.

Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
Actually my brother plays a cleric and loves the game more than I do.

Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
By fluid, i guess you mean Repetative?
But as you already know it's been said that Rft doesn't have the best charactor animation. But it still looks more advanced than wow due rift having the wepon not being an static object.

Nice Rift and Aion Melee comparison (I think Aion is the current Bar for inspiring combat imo)

My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.
basically an all in one game that represents all the lessons learned from the mainstream MMO market in one game over the past decade. As much as I am not attracted to WoW, WAR, EQ and EQ2 I can appreciate this and I also think this is a milestone for this platform. Moving forward MMO games will have to come up with new ideas now to push things forward so to speak.

I stopped playing DCUO and WoW as a result.
From hater to fanboi = me.
I hated it.
