one month will cost me 20 dollars because im from Canada.
That is way over priced and I will not be paying 20 dollars a month for this game.
Comments
why would it cost you $20 a month? i guess i dont understand why a canadian would have to pay more then an american. i figure it would be 14.99 at what ever currency. right now im on the founder 6 month sub for $59.94.
Can't you pay in USD? The one month subcription is only 14.99 USD. The Euro prices are likely more expensive because they include VAT.
Also, 1 month subcription in euros (13 euros) is 17.5 CAD. How could anyone possibly manage to pay 20 (Canadanian) dollars a month from this game?
Huh ? 1 month price is exactly same as in WoW/ WAR / Aion .
@OP I can't figure out your reasoning, but as far as I'm aware, Canada isn't part of the EU.
Have a read of this thread and it may all become more clear in your mind: http://goo.gl/gdxew
Would be cool though. I for one, as a Dutchman, would welcome our new Canadian overlords.
My brand new bloggity blog.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
um.. 9.99 US is not 20 canadian.

F2P players, who think every game should be F2P, turn me off. Its the whole "entitlement genreation" thing that gets me.
There are plenty of free games for you. Chalked full of fustrating and unpleasant mechanics to entice you to pay MORE than a standard P2P would cost. Also tied into every F2P game is the whole concept of the rich (or wastefull) stomping on the poor (or money conservatives). Shit most F2P games offer things like renting mounts and inventory/warehouse space, each more than a nonthly fee, and your just renting.
Or you could just pay a standard fee, be on the same level playing field as everyone else, and have access to the whole game all the time.
I dunno, give up eating out once a month, or going to the bar once a month. Theres your monthly fee. Its not hard. If $15 a month is considerd way too much for you, then perhaps spending hours a day on a mmorpg shouldnt be your highest priority...
Oh and for the OP: Google currency conversion rates. One canadian dollar is not equal to one euro, or one pound, or one american dollaer (its close though).
I think your "hey im paying more" feeling is due to the fact that you dont understand monetary conversions or really what money is. A little enducation into currencies, economics, and monetary policy would go a long ways...since they dont teach any of it in mandatory public school.
True, but the OP isn't saying that. He's saying that 12.99 canadian converts to about $20 a month.
It converts to:
12.99 USD
=
12.8352 CAD

The OP isn't demanding F2P. Read the OP before posting, please.
Ye - I dont find Rift quality enough to pay monthly sub for.
It converts to:
12.99 USD
=
12.8352 CAD
Yep the US dollar is weaker than the Canadian dollar. Has been for about 8 years.

The monthly fee for Rift is in line with other games at their level and if you don't want to pay it then there are a lot of other less costly games you can try.
The fact that it might cost you nearly 20 Canadian dollars is more a reflection on the exchange rate and Canadian economy than the value of the game.
Where they getting $20 a month, then? Is there a conversion fee?
Yes but he is failing to understand that $12.99 EU (or whatever currency the origional subscription fee is in) is in fact worth $20 canadian dollars, they are of equal value. Hes is paying the same amount of money for the game as someone in EU (aside from slight variations in the exchange rate, since they are constantly moving)
Education FTW
We usually don't pay more, but the relative price fluctuates according to the exchange rate. This might be what is confusing the OP. I can't say for certain what the sub price is for Rift, but generally, we pay the exact same amount as Americans +/- exchange. EU prices are set separately from North American prices to account for a higher government imposed surcharges, so simply applying the CDN exchange rate to the Euro amount is incorrect.
By the way, I think the CDN dollar is actually trading pretty much at par with the American dollar, so the difference is negligible. We have been for a while now so it's a good time for Canadians to buy American -- as opposed to a few years ago when ours was worth about 70 cents USD.
THe op is converting EUROS into Dollars. Not CAD to USD....
Exactly, that's my question, where is the 20 per month?

I am also from Canada, locked into a 3 month founder at 11.99 USD a month,
OP you are converting EURO"S into CAD but that's not right you will be paying in USD's and right now we are a little bit higher
So have no fear, you don;t have to pay 20 a month for rift
"All expectation leads to suffering" Buhhda
I thought he was converting euros to canadian dollars, $13 Euros equalling around $20 canadian dollars sounds about right.
Either way its all FIAT dollars and backed by the taxpayers ability to earn the FIAT dollars...so its backed by are ability to make funny money thats just printed,....so its backed by a printing press....its all worthless =D
So he's complaining that he(?) has to pay CAN via Euro conversion? And is that even true? Seems like he should be able to convert to USD just as easily.
even if its 20 dollar ( if its fun ) you have a month acces to fun for only 20 dollar.
i think mmorpgs that do provide updates and support have a very low sub cost.
Perhaps hes one of those three headed / half man half beast, french canadians, and wishes to play with his bretheren across the pond on the EU client?
The most important thing I've learned from this thread is that with conversion rates, Europeans pay more than people from the US, and Canadians pay even more.
The life lesson we should all be taking home from this?
Live in the US, MMORPGs are cheaper.
