People have come to the realization that RIFT is somewhat of a "clone" of other games such as Warhammer, LOTRO, Everquest, and of course all of our favorites World of Warcraft. Realizing this, players have gone onto a constant nerd-rampage of bickering, players such as myself included.
But looking over the grand scale of things with our current MMO market and how terrible the majority of most MMORPG games being released are, i think taking aspects of games, that are in my eyes "great games" shouldn't be considered a bad thing. Players are expecting a major changes in PvE and PvP and when a game comes out with CRAZY NEW IDEAS OMG OMG OMG they strangly...seem...to...backfire and NOT WORKKKKK, although we would all just love something cool and new, i think the classics are always going to be "where its at" and going to satisfy us when it comes to gaming.
The EQ/WoW clone is like the Al Green, Neil Young, Doors, or Led Zeppelin. It may get reppetative but its something classic you can always come back to and its something every new musician learns from (or game developer) if im going to make a little analogy.
BASICALLY i'm just saying i pre-ordered the game as of today and if the game is somewhat of a clone WHO CARES, maybe we might potentially have a game that will survive longer than 3 months!!! So buy the game!
But here are some other choices of games if you don't want to play RIFT.......
DCUO- a game rittled with glitches and run by SOE....egh
LOTRO- great free-ish game with great PvE but terrible PVP.
Darkfall- Feels like Elderscroll...except with assholes lurking around every corner =/
EQ2- Great PvE bring friends, decent world pvp. low to mediocre world population. AND ITS FREE-ish
Champions Online- Just started this one up again since its free, populated, and 6/10 superhero mmos arn't ever SPECTACULAR
WoW- FINE GO BACK TO WARCRAFT YOU COWARD!

All fast food places are just McDonald's clones. Why go anywhere but McDonald's? Until someone stops making restaurants where you wait in line at a counter, order from a menu board, pay for your food and either get it on a tray to eat there, or have it in a bag to eat somewhere else, why bother?
All cars are Model T clones, Why did we even bother changing the design? When will a car not have a steering wheel, a frame, an engine, four wheels that are steered by the front wheels; wind shields, seats, dash boards and doors? I mean, they are all clones, give us one, simple design and don't bother us with something else until you come up with a car that isn't a clone of every other car!
All drinks are water clones. They are all liquid and satisfy our thirst. They all are usually consumed from a container, which is just a clone of every other water holding container! I want a drink that's not just another clone!
I think you see where I'm going with this. Calling any game that fits the criteria of being an MMORPG a WoW clone is just as absurd. There have been some attempts to make an MMO that looks, feels and plays exactly like WoW, Same cartoony graphics, world design, character design, class design, etc... maybe the label "WoW clone" would be useful in describing such a game, along with the qualifier "Good" or "Bad". Some people might like a good game that is almost exactly like WoW, but with a new world and a fresh start, while everyone would likely avoid the "Bad WoW clone" as not being a viable rip off.
Rift is no WoW clone, nor are 95% of the games where that label is thrown around so losely.
Some people who like WoW will like Rift. Some people who hate WoW, will like rift. Some people who like WoW will hate Rift. Some people who hate WoW will hate Rift. Further invalidating the value of calling it a "WoW clone". Your experience or opinion of WoW has no direct bearing on whether one will like this game, hate this game or have an opinion somewhere in between.
Isn't it time we give the whole "Clone Thing" a rest?

The 'clone', 'just a gimmick' and 'looks like' comments are rather old and frankly requires no thought or imagination from that particular poster. Example: ____________ (<--- Insert your favorite band) is a clone of the Rolling Stones- they all use guitars, a drummer, and a vocalist. Maybe a mix here and there with a drum machine or keyboard, but hey they are all clones Oh noes, I am you and you are me...we have arms, hands, feet...oh noes!
Yes, what works well will be used and improved by others to offer more entertaining experiences for their customers- entertainment. If you are entertained, then subscribe and enjoy! If not, switch the channel!
I am enjoying the game, it has captured my attention and I am entertained thus far. Good job Triton.
I'm an enormous Led Zeppelin fan, and had played their albums (yes the black disc thinger) so much i had to go back and buy another copy of a good many of them. However now, if I hear one of the "radio friendly" songs, I tend to change the channel, especially Stairway... I've just heard that song too many times...
Same with my MMOs i suppose.. If i have to do the linear quest lines of kill 10 more boars, or quest hubs.. one more time to level, I'm going to pull my hair out... and i ain't got much left....
And thats probably why i never bought a Whitesnake album
Don't like much wow rip off, but i have nothing to play so i want give rift a shot with the next open beta. Is a lot of time i never try a western mmo again.
Why people hate the clones?
The good thing about WOW clones is that they kill their own older species.
The bad thing about WOW clones is that they keep selling the "original" (most known) even more.
One game should break the eternal circle, just one.
I disagree.
Every MMORPG with a fantasy paint, quests, levels, pve, pvp, dungeons etc is a pure and utter clone of what "the market" knows.
One tiny and tagged on feature is not making it unique, Not even 10 tiny and tagged on features.
They are all Elvis imitators for the general public.
I don't hate clones as they are a fact of life in the modern MMORPG genre. What I hate are games that don't really do much of anything better than the game they're copying. EQ2, Rift, and WAR are all examples of some games I consider to be rather poor clones of WoW. I don't care for LotRO, but at least it does what it does rather well.
So you hate WoW for doing far less than the games that came before it?
And no, we should not be satisfied with clones. The only people that are satisfied are new and ignorant to the fact that this genre once had massive amounts of innovation and diversity. Now we're giving out "Most innovative game of the year" titles to games that have... public quests. Wow. We've fallen far.
The only people complaining about clones are
- The sandbox crowd
- The action "wanting faster combat mechanicsand combos" crowd (See DCUO/AoC/Vindictus)
- The "I hate WoW because Blizzard destroyed the genre + brought all the kids and soccer moms to my favorite basement dwelling genre" crowd
- The old schoolers "I'm a vet hear me roar!" crowd that wants a new UO/EQ based on the old principles.
- The "If it doesn't have perma death FFA PvP then it sucks" crowd
- The "OMG I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF RIFT!!... oh wait what's that? the squirrels look kind of funny..Ok i definitely don't like the game now" kind.
How can you put EQ2 in the same boat, it came out before WoW and it is by far a superior product, but at the time, people needed a better computer to play EQ2 than WoW.
Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!
Funny that many posting in this thread are spending so much time in their forum fishing boat trying to disuade so many that Rift isnt a smartly polished evolutionary mmo, while most of their mmo's are floundering. Intersting for sure.
Striving for Silver Stars since Gold is so effeminate.
You forgot the "I love this genre with a passion and would hate to see it deteriorate further beyond it's current state of stagnation" crowd.
There are more than a few of us out there

Smartly polished, perhaps, evolutionary, even the fanbois won't go there.

Exactly! lol
And @OP I agree, Rift definitely did take ideas from other MMOs just because that has become the standard. People who complain about clones and what not need to remember that what ever game they believe Rift is a clone of is a clone of something else. All MMOs are the same in ways, and all also try to implement something a little different, which Rift is doing very well with their dynamic events. Rift is just a really good game when you get down to it and I am content with playing it.
Just about every MMO out at the time was a better product than WoW by far, they just didn't have Blizzard's brand name or marketing power. Most MMORPG players played WoW and left because it' was and still is, an uninsteresting watered down clone.
Look, all video games are divided up into genres. You have RPGs, FPS games, fighting games, sports games, and you also have MMORPG. Now, for games like WoW, EQ, and UO to be called an MMORPG, they each have to vaguely share certain things in common like the ability to play with thousands of others on a single server, some form of character progression, and the ability to join groups and guilds. What separates those games is how they go about doing those things. In UO, you had no levels. You just got better at whatever skills you used the most. In EQ, you got better at everything per each invidual level, and WoW has since followed that model. The difference just lies in how you progress. In EQ, you grinded mobs for hours in a full group, while in WoW, you could solo quest with little to no downtime. There are many more comparisons you could make between the two games that, I think, show that they aren't so similar.
I say all this because I don't harp on WoW for being less intricate than EQ because it's not seeking to copy EQ as much as it tries to be an evolved and streamlined version of EQ accessible to a more casual audience. To me, you start getting into absolute clone territory when you start copying class mechanics, mundane questing, spells/skills, UI, and the like.
Sooooo.... Basically what he's saying is : The only people complaining about clones are : everyone except WoW players? Thanks for proving our point.
Has anybody actually purchased it from Wal-Mart to get the Shambler Hatchling instead of one of the sourcestones?
I do not like the look of the Crystalline rune from Amazon, the Swirling from GameStop looks pretty cool - but with tax and shipping it costs close to $12 more than either Amazon or Wal-Mart. Best Buy's Frozen rune costs $7 more than Amazon or Wal-Mart.
But um, uh, yeah - the term clone is kind of overused - like saying a BMW 760Li is a clone of a Ford Fiesta, because - you know, they're both cars. There are standard MMORPG features that many games will have. You know, like how even movies will have those standard features - but the story and setting, etc are different? Yep, welcome to MMORPGs, seriously...oh well.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

I wouldn't put EQ2 in the same boat if it were still the same game at launch, which was a title that had far more in common with FFXI and the original EQ than WoW. These days, however, it feels to me like a rather aged and poorly made WoW clone.
I used to recommend that game over WoW and LotRO, but I'm not sure I would do the same today. I mean, you can do worse than play EQ2, but I no longer think it's the best or even second best game out there.
Sooo, you don't start getting into clone territory until... you get into all the games that launched after WoW?
As for WoW not being a clone of EQ... it certainly is. It has pretty much the same game mechanics, they're just all simpler. A level and gear grind followed by a raid grind, with all the inherent problems still present that were in EQ in 1999. They try to fix these by piling on more and more instances, but soon the entire game just resembles a big bandaid. Better games fixed these problems without instances in 2001, but since WoW is a copy of EQ... it has all the same problems.
